    Developing numerical libraries in Java

    The rapid and widespread adoption of Java has created a demand for reliable and reusable mathematical software components to support the growing number of compute-intensive applications now under development, particularly in science and engineering. In this paper we address practical issues of the Java language and environment which have an effect on numerical library design and development. Benchmarks which illustrate the current levels of performance of key numerical kernels on a variety of Java platforms are presented. Finally, a strategy for the development of a fundamental numerical toolkit for Java is proposed and its current status is described.Comment: 11 pages.     Positioning systems in Minkowski space-time: Bifurcation problem and observational data

    In the framework of relativistic positioning systems in Minkowski space-time, the determination of the inertial coordinates of a user involves the {\em bifurcation problem} (which is the indeterminate location of a pair of different events receiving the same emission coordinates). To solve it, in addition to the user emission coordinates and the emitter positions in inertial coordinates, it may happen that the user needs to know {\em independently} the orientation of its emission coordinates. Assuming that the user may observe the relative positions of the four emitters on its celestial sphere, an observational rule to determine this orientation is presented. The bifurcation problem is thus solved by applying this observational rule, and consequently, {\em all} of the parameters in the general expression of the coordinate transformation from emission coordinates to inertial ones may be computed from the data received by the user of the relativistic positioning system.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures.     Grammatical Evolution for the Multi-Objective Integration and Test Order Problem

    Search techniques have been successfully applied for solving different software testing problems. However, choosing, implementing and configuring a search technique can be hard tasks. To reduce efforts spent in such tasks, this paper presents an offline hyper-heuristic named GEMOITO, based on Grammatical Evolution (GE). The goal is to automatically generate a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) to solve the Integration and Test Order (ITO) problem. The MOEAs are distinguished by components and parameters values, described by a grammar. The proposed hyper-heuristic is compared to conventional MOEAs and to a selection hyper-heuristic used in related work. Results show that GEMOITO can generate MOEAs that are statistically better or equivalent to the compared algorithms

    An Approach for the Generation of Multi-Objective Algorithms Applied to the Integration and Test Order Problem

    Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) have been successfully applied to solve hard real software engineering problems. However, to choose and design a MOEA is considered a difficult task, since there are several parameters and components to be configured. These aspects directly impact the generated solutions and the performance of MOEAs. In this sense, this paper proposes an approach for the automatic generation of MOEAs applied to the Integration and Test Order (ITO) problem. Such a problem refers to the generation of optimal sequences of units for integration testing. The approach includes a set of parameters and components of different MOEAs, and is implemented with two design algorithms: Grammatical Evolution (GE) and Iterated Racing (irace). Evaluation results are presented, comparing the MOEAs generated by both design algorithms. Furthermore, the generated MOEAs are compared to two well-known MOEAs used in the literature to solve the ITO problem. Results show that the MOEAs generated with GE and irace perform similarly, and both outperform traditional MOEAs. The approach can reduce efforts spent to design and configure MOEAs, and serves as basis for implementing solutions to other software engineering problems

    A numerical study of cell merger over Cuba ? Part II: sensitivity to environmental conditions

    International audienceIn the first part of this study, an external 3-D ambient field (3d-field) was used to initiate a simulation (Sim1). In this paper, the influence of the 3-D field in the occurrence of the cloud merger simulated in Sim1 is studied. The surface convergence was very important to supply the lifting necessary for the development of new the convection. The interaction of the gust front from an old cloud with the environmental wind, as well as the interaction between the two gust fronts, were the main factors that enhanced the surface convergence. A favorable perturbation pressure gradient was also found to intensify this mechanism. The formation and development of a new cloud from the cloud bridge was the main feature for the occurrence of the cloud merger. The influence of the wind shear components and the relative humidity (RH) in the occurrence of the cloud merger was also analyzed. The parallel wind shear component and the large RH present in the zone of study had a positive contribution to the occurrence of the cloud merger. However, the perpendicular wind shear component did not provide the main forced lifting which would be capable of generating the new convection along the direction between interacting clouds. A high resolution simulation corroborated that the cloud merger was correctly simulated and it was not obtained by unrealistic effects due to the coarse resolution employed. It evidenced that when the horizontal resolution is improved, the life cycle of each cloud and the different processes related to their interactions are better described

    A numerical study of cell merger over Cuba ? Part I: implementation of the ARPS/MM5 models

    International audienceOn 21 July 2001 a number of severe storms developed over the region of Camaguey, Cuba, which were observed by radar. A numerical simulation was performed in order to realistically reproduce the development of the storms observed that day. The mesoscale model MM5 was used to determine the initial, boundary and update conditions for the storm-scale simulation with the model ARPS. Changes to the source code of ARPS were made in order to assimilate the output from the MM5 as input data and a new land-use file with a 1-km horizontal resolution for the Cuban territory was created. A case representing the merger between cells at different stages of development was correctly reproduced by the simulation and is in good agreement with radar observations. The state of development of each cell, the time when the merger occurred, starting from the formation of clouds, the propagation motion of the cells and the increase in precipitation, due to the growth of the area after the merger, were correctly reproduced. Simulated clouds matched the main characteristics of the observed radar echoes, though in some cases, reflectivity tops and horizontal areas were overestimated. Maximum reflectivity values and the heights where these maximum values were located were in good agreement with radar data, particularly when the model reflectivity was calculated without including the snow. The MM5/ARPS configuration introduced in this study, improved sensibly the ability to simulate convective systems, thereby enhancing the local forecasting of convection in the region

    Temporal trends of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a dated sediment core of a high atitude mountain lake: Chungara Lake-Northern Chile (18° S)

    In this study levels, fuxes and temporal trend of PAHs are reported in a sediment core from Chungará Lake (18° S) in Northern Chile. The sediments were obtained by Kayac corer and freeze dried. PAHs were extracted in SOXHLET system and measured by HPLC with diode array detector and fuorescence detection. Sedimentary record chronology was determined using210Pb isotopes and organic carbon (%) was also measured in sediments. Concentrations (ng g-1 d.w.) of PAHs were low ranging from ∼1 to 50. PAHs fngerprint was dominated by 3-ring (21%) and 4-ring. Organic carbon (%) ranged from ∼17 to 24 (21±3) and no statistical signifcant correlation (p<0.05) was detected between OC (%) and PAHs along the sediment core. PAHs fuxes (μg m-2yr-1) fuctuated from ∼0.3 (cm 1) to 35 (cm 5) in 1978. LPAHs/HPAHs ratios (0.04 to 3) indicate petrogenic and pyrolytic origin of PAHs. This results contributes with new information of PAHs deposition at high altitudinal lake in Southern Hemisphere
