Optical loss compensation in a bulk left-handed metamaterial by the gain in quantum dots
A bulk left-handed metamaterial with fishnet structure is investigated to
show the optical loss compensation via surface plasmon amplification, with the
assistance of a Gaussian gain in PbS quantum dots. The optical resonance
enhancement around 200 THz is confirmed by the retrieval method. By exploring
the dependence of propagation loss on the gain coefficient and metamaterial
thickness, we verify numerically that the left-handed response can endure a
large propagation thickness with ultralow and stable loss under a certain gain
coefficient.Comment: 6 pages with 4 figure
Enhancement of absorption bistability by trapping light planar metamaterial
We propose to achieve a strong bistable response of a thin layer of a
saturable absorption medium by involving a planar metamaterial specially
designed to bear a high-Q trapped-mode resonance in the infrared region.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Nonlinear magnetoinductive transmission lines
Power transmission in one-dimensional nonlinear magnetic metamaterials driven
at one end is investigated numerically and analytically in a wide frequency
range. The nonlinear magnetic metamaterials are composed of varactor-loaded
split-ring resonators which are coupled magnetically through their mutual
inductances, forming thus a magnetoiductive transmission line. In the linear
limit, significant power transmission along the array only appears for
frequencies inside the linear magnetoinductive wave band. We present
analytical, closed form solutions for the magnetoinductive waves transmitting
the power in this regime, and their discrete frequency dispersion. When
nonlinearity is important, more frequency bands with significant power
transmission along the array may appear. In the equivalent circuit picture, the
nonlinear magnetoiductive transmission line driven at one end by a relatively
weak electromotive force, can be modeled by coupled
resistive-inductive-capacitive (RLC) circuits with voltage-dependent
capacitance. Extended numerical simulations reveal that power transmission
along the array is also possible in other than the linear frequency bands,
which are located close to the nonlinear resonances of a single nonlinear RLC
circuit. Moreover, the effectiveness of power transmission for driving
frequencies in the nonlinear bands is comparable to that in the linear band.
Power transmission in the nonlinear bands occurs through the linear modes of
the system, and it is closely related to the instability of a mode that is
localized at the driven site.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, submitted to International Journal of

Photonic Analogue of Two-dimensional Topological Insulators and Helical One-Way Edge Transport in Bi-Anisotropic Metamaterials
Recent progress in understanding the topological properties of condensed
matter has led to the discovery of time-reversal invariant topological
insulators. Because of limitations imposed by nature, topologically non-trivial
electronic order seems to be uncommon except in small-band-gap semiconductors
with strong spin-orbit interactions. In this Article we show that artificial
electromagnetic structures, known as metamaterials, provide an attractive
platform for designing photonic analogues of topological insulators. We
demonstrate that a judicious choice of the metamaterial parameters can create
photonic phases that support a pair of helical edge states, and that these edge
states enable one-way photonic transport that is robust against disorder.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Nonlinear oscillator metamaterial model: numerical and experimental verification.
We verify numerically and experimentally the accuracy of an analytical model used to derive the effective nonlinear susceptibilities of a varactor-loaded split ring resonator (VLSRR) magnetic medium. For the numerical validation, a nonlinear oscillator model for the effective magnetization of the metamaterial is applied in conjunction with Maxwell equations and the two sets of equations solved numerically in the time-domain. The computed second harmonic generation (SHG) from a slab of a nonlinear material is then compared with the analytical model. The computed SHG is in excellent agreement with that predicted by the analytical model, both in terms of magnitude and spectral characteristics. Moreover, experimental measurements of the power transmitted through a fabricated VLSRR metamaterial at several power levels are also in agreement with the model, illustrating that the effective medium techniques associated with metamaterials can accurately be transitioned to nonlinear systems
Experimental determination of the quadratic nonlinear magnetic susceptibility of a varactor-loaded split ring resonator metamaterial
This letter presents a quantitative measurement of the second harmonic generated by a slab of varactor loaded split ring resonator metamaterial and the retrieval of the effective quadratic nonlinear magnetic susceptibility χ(2)musing an approach based on transfer matrices. The retrieved value of χ(2)m is in excellent agreement with that predicted by an analytical effective medium theory model. © 2010 American Institute of Physics
