    Height Fluctuations and Intermittency of V2O5V_2 O_5 Films by Atomic Force Microscopy

    The spatial scaling law and intermittency of the V2O5V_2 O_5 surface roughness by atomic force microscopy has been investigated. The intermittency of the height fluctuations has been checked by two different methods, first, by measuring scaling exponent of q-th moment of height-difference fluctuations i.e. Cq=C_q = and the second, by defining generating function Z(q,N)Z(q,N) and generalized multi-fractal dimension DqD_q. These methods predict that there is no intermittency in the height fluctuations. The observed roughness and dynamical exponents can be explained by the numerical simulation on the basis of forced Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation.Comment: 6 pages (two columns), 11 eps. figures, late

    Stratigraphy 12 (2) Biostratigraphy of the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary beds at Kopet-Dagh, Iran

    ABSTRACT: A continuous succession comprising upper Cambrian (Furongian) to Lower Ordovician (Tremadocian) conodont biozones is reported for the first time from the Kopet-Dagh Region of northeastern Iran. Seven biostratigraphical units are recognized, including the Proconodontus tenuiserratus and Proconodontus posterocostatus zones; these two lowermost biostratigraphical units are defined by euconodont species which have not been previously reported from Iran and temperate latitude peri-Gondwana. The conodont diversity and abundance decreased significantly above the Eoconodontus notchpeakensis Zone; the conodont faunas of the succeeding Cordylodus proavus, Cordylodus lindstromi (sensu lato) and Cordylodus angulatus zones are characterised by oligotaxic to monotaxic associations dominated by species of Cordylodus. In the absence of diagnostic conodont species, the position of the lower boundary of the Ordovician System in the Kalat Valley Section can be placed somewhat below the first occurrence of the early planktonic graptolite Rhabdinopora flabelliformis, which approximately coincides with the onset of black shale deposition

    Double blind randomized placebo-controlled trial on the effects of testosterone supplementation in elderly men with moderate to low testosterone levels: design and baseline characteristics [ISRCTN23688581]

    In ageing men testosterone levels decline, while cognitive function, muscle and bone mass, sexual hair growth, libido and sexual activity decline and the risk of cardiovascular diseases increase. We set up a double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effects of testosterone supplementation on functional mobility, quality of life, body composition, cognitive function, vascular function and risk factors, and bone mineral density in older hypogonadal men. We recruited 237 men with serum testosterone levels below 13.7 nmol/L and ages 60–80 years. They were randomized to either four capsules of 40 mg testosterone undecanoate (TU) or placebo daily for 26 weeks. Primary endpoints are functional mobility and quality of life. Secondary endpoints are body composition, cognitive function, aortic stiffness and cardiovascular risk factors and bone mineral density. Effects on prostate, liver and hematological parameters will be studied with respect to safety. Measure of effect will be the difference in change from baseline visit to final visit between TU and placebo. We will study whether the effect of TU differs across subgroups of baseline waist girth (< 100 cm vs. ≥ 100 cm; testosterone level (<12 versus ≥ 12 nmol/L), age (< median versus ≥ median), and level of outcome under study (< median versus ≥ median). At baseline, mean age, BMI and testosterone levels were 67 years, 27 kg/m(2 )and 10.72 nmol/L, respectively

    Clinical practice guidelines for the prevention and treatment of EGFR inhibitor-associated dermatologic toxicities

    Background Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRI) produce various dermatologic side effects in the majority of patients, and guidelines are crucial for the prevention and treatment of these untoward events. The purpose of this panel was to develop evidence-based recommendations for EGFRI-associated dermatologic toxicities. Methods A multinational, interdisciplinary panel of experts in supportive care in cancer reviewed pertinent studies using established criteria in order to develop first-generation recommendations for EGFRI-associated dermatologic toxicities. Results Prophylactic and reactive recommendations for papulopustular (acneiform) rash, hair changes, radiation dermatitis, pruritus, mucositis, xerosis/fissures, and paronychia are presented, as well as general dermatologic recommendations when possible. Conclusion Prevention and management of EGFRI-related dermatologic toxicities is critical to maintain patients’ health-related quality of life and dose intensity of antineoplastic regimens. More rigorous investigation of these toxicities is warranted to improve preventive and treatment strategies

    Optimal probabilistic encryption for secure detection in wireless sensor networks

    We consider the problem of secure detection in wireless sensor networks operating over insecure links. It is assumed that an eavesdropping fusion center (EFC) attempts to intercept the transmissions of the sensors and to detect the state of nature. The sensor nodes quantize their observations using a multilevel quantizer. Before transmission to the ally fusion center (AFC), the senor nodes encrypt their data using a probabilistic encryption scheme, which randomly maps the sensor\u27s data to another quantizer output level using a stochastic cipher matrix (key). The communication between the sensors and each fusion center is assumed to be over a parallel access channel with identical and independent branches, and with each branch being a discrete memoryless channel. We employ J-divergence as the performance criterion for both the AFC and EFC. The optimal solution for the cipher matrices is obtained in order to maximize J-divergence for AFC, whereas ensuring that it is zero for the EFC. With the proposed method, as long as the EFC is not aware of the specific cipher matrix employed by each sensor, its detection performance will be very poor. The cost of this method is a small degradation in the detection performance of the AFC. The proposed scheme has no communication overhead and minimal processing requirements making it suitable for sensors with limited resources. Numerical results showing the detection performance of the AFC and EFC verify the efficacy of the proposed method. © 2005-2012 IEEE

    Vertebral artery dissection in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: A case series and literature review

    Background: Arterial dissection is a rare complication of pregnancy and puerperium. There have been reports of aortic, coronary and cervical artery dissection in association with preeclampsia, however, vertebral artery dissection is rarely reported particularly in the antenatal setting in the presence of a Hypertensive Disorder of Pregnancy (HDP).The general annual incidence of symptomatic spontaneous cervicocephalic arterial dissection is 0.0026 % and a data registry reported that 2.4 % of these occurred in the post-partum period. The actual incidence of vertebral artery dissection in HDP is unknown as the current literature consists of case series and reports only with most documenting adverse outcomes. Given the presence of collateral circulation, unilateral vertebral artery dissections may go unrecognised and may be more common than suspected. Case presentation: We present a case series of four patients with vertebral artery dissection in association with HDP, two of which occurred in the antenatal setting and two in the post-partum setting. All our patients had favourable outcome with no maternal neurological deficit and live infants. Our discussion covers the proposed pathophysiology of vertebral artery dissection in HDP and the management of it. Conclusion: Our case series highlights the need to consider VAD an important differential diagnosis when assessing pregnant women with headache and neck pain particularly in the context of HDP

    Dynamic changes of regulatory T cell and dendritic cell subsets in stable kidney transplant patients a prospective analysis

    Introduction. We aimed to identify immune status of the stable kidney allografts from the point of some cellular changes that may occur after transplantation. Materials and Methods. This study considered 57 patients with no rejection during the 6 months after transplantation. Flow cytometric frequencies of circulatory CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ and CD8+CD28- regulatory T cells (Treg) as well as myeloid dendritic cells type 1 (MDC1) and type 2 (MDC2) and plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDC) were measured before transplantation and 2 weeks and 1, 3, and 6 months after transplantation. Using adjusted model of repeated measure analysis, we assessed the influence of different parameters on different cell subsets. Results. The mean number of Tregs and PDCs decreased 2 weeks after transplantation and then increased as they reached their values before transplantation within a few months after transplantation. The mean MDC1s increased during 2 weeks and then decreased to its before-transplantation values within 6 months. The frequency of Tregs (r = 0.90) and MDC1s (r = 0.75) at month 3 could strongly predict their frequencies at month 6. Different variables including family relationship between donor and recipient, glomerular filtration rate, and human leukocyte antigen antibody mismatch did not change the frequency of different cell subsets during the time. Conclusions. The dynamism and circulatory changes in the frequency of Tregs and PDCs are opposite to MDCs after kidney transplantation. We describe these changes in a group of patients with stable graft; however, our study does not render any idea in patients with unstable or rejecting grafts
