    African American Students\u27 Perceptions of Influential Factors for Attendance in Doctoral Psychology

    This study explores African American undergraduate students’ perceptions of factors influencing their decision to attend doctoral programs in psychology. There is a scarcity of literature examining perceptions held by specific minority groups in regard to influential factors used to make a significant step toward their career development. Eight undergraduate students interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in psychology were interviewed. A semi-structured interview and two paper-pencil measures were used. Interviews were analyzed utilizing the consensual qualitative research (CQR) method. The following themes emerged: reasons for pursuing a doctoral degree, navigating the application process, factors influencing interest in psychology, perception of a program’s commitment to diversity, importance of ethnic minority representation in a program, financial concerns, family view of psychology, most important factor for attendance, and prior school experiences outside of psychology. The study found that issues related to African American representation and research, as well as the presence of financial aid, are highly relevant in students’ evaluation of which doctoral programs they prefer to attend. This information will pave the way for further studies focusing on how to increase the number of African American students in doctoral programs around the country

    Attacking (EC)DSA scheme with ephemeral keys sharing specific bits

    In this paper, we present a deterministic attack on (EC)DSA signature scheme, providing that several signatures are known such that the corresponding ephemeral keys share a certain amount of bits without knowing their value. By eliminating the shared blocks of bits between the ephemeral keys, we get a lattice of dimension equal to the number of signatures having a vector containing the private key. We compute an upper bound for the distance of this vector from a target vector, and next, using Kannan's enumeration algorithm, we determine it and hence the secret key. The attack can be made highly efficient by appropriately selecting the number of shared bits and the number of signatures

    Parasite Component Community of Smalltooth Sawfish Off Florida: Diversity, Conservation Concerns, and Research Applications

    Compared with that of other charismatic elasmobranchs, the component community of metazoan parasites infecting endangered smalltooth sawfish Pristis pectinata is exceedingly poorly characterized: adults of Dermophthirioides pristidis and Neoheterocotyle inpristi (ectoparasitic flatworms of skin and gill, respectively) were the only confirmed parasites prior to the description, based on specimens reported herein, of Mycteronastes caalusi. Our opportune and directed parasitological examinations of 290 smalltooth sawfish (277 live inspections; 13 necropsies; 671 to 2640 mm stretch total length) in south Florida coastal waters revealed at least 8 species of Platyhelminthes, 9 of Arthropoda, 4 of Annelida, and 1 of Nematoda. This collection includes representatives of an undescribed species of Aporocotylidae (Digenea) and myriad new host records, considerably updating and advancing our understanding of smalltooth sawfish symbionts. We also confirm that D. pristidis and N. inpristi are extant and propose D. pristidis as a reliable biological tag. Some of these parasites are evidently highly host-specific and so vulnerable to extinction

    Raman study of the anharmonicity in YBa2_2Cu3_3Ox_x

    A systematic Raman study in the visible carried out on the YBa2Cu316,18Ox (x=6-7) compounds, with isotopic substitution of 18O for 16O, has detected a doping dependent deviation from harmonic behavior for the frequency shift of the in-phase mode, a smaller amount of anharmonicity for the apex mode, and almost no effect for the out-of-phase B1g-symmetry phonon. It appears that the amount of anharmonicity depends strongly on the oxygen concentration; it diminishes close to the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition and close to optimal doping, while it reaches its maximum value for the ortho-II and a tetragonal phase. The almost zero anharmonicity at optimal doping persists even at 77K. The data in the overdoped oxygen concentration, where a softening of the in-phase phonon frequency occurs, indicate that the anharmonicity is not enhanced by the sudden increase in the CuO2 buckling. The results fully agree with recent studies of the ortho-II phase but they do not comply with a static double-well potential of the apical oxygen atom at optimal doping.Comment: Dedicated to Prof. K.     Tripeptide tyroserleutide plus doxorubicin: therapeutic synergy and side effect attenuation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tripeptide tyroserleutide (YSL) is a novel small molecule anti-tumor polypeptide that has been shown to inhibit the growth of human liver cancer cells. In this study, we investigated the effects of YSL plus doxorubicin on the growth of human hepatocellular carcinoma BEL-7402 cells that had been transplanted into nude mice.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Nude mice bearing human hepatocellular carcinoma BEL-7402 tumors were treated with successive intraperitoneal injections of saline; low-, mid-, or high-dose doxorubicin; or low-, mid-, or high-dose doxorubicin plus YSL. Effects on the weight and volume of the tumors were evaluated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Co-administration of YSL and high-dose doxorubicin (6 mg/kg every other day) prolonged the survival time of tumor-bearing mice as compared to high-dose doxorubicin alone. As well, the anti-tumor effects of mid- and low-dose doxorubicin (2 and 0.7 mg/kg every other day, respectively) were enhanced when supplemented with YSL; the tumor growth inhibition rates for YSL plus doxorubicin were greater than the inhibition rates for the same dosages of doxorubicin alone. The combination of YSL and doxorubicin decreased chemotherapy-associated weight loss, leukocyte depression, and heart, liver, and kidney damage as compared to doxorubicin alone.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The combination of YSL plus doxorubicin enhances the anti-tumor effect and reduces the side effects associated with doxorubicin chemotherapy.</p

    Phonon dispersion in 1-layer cuprate HgBa2CuO4+d

    We investigate the low energy acoustical and optical modes in HgBa2CuO4+δ\mathrm{HgBa_2CuO_{4+\delta}} using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). The experimental phonon dispersion and the dynamical structure factor are compared with an atomic shell model, and the set of the atomic potentials obtained are discussed. Our results are also compared with those obtained by Raman spectroscopy and with density-of-state data measured by inelastic neutron scattering

    In vivo expression of innate immunity markers in patients with mycobacterium tuberculosis infection

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Toll-like receptors (TLRs), Coronin-1 and Sp110 are essential factors for the containment of <it>Mycobacterium tuberculosis </it>infection. The purpose of this study was to investigate the <it>in vivo </it>expression of these molecules at different stages of the infection and uncover possible relationships between these markers and the state of the disease.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Twenty-two patients with active tuberculosis, 15 close contacts of subjects with latent disease, 17 close contacts of subjects negative for mycobacterium antigens and 10 healthy, unrelated to patients, subjects were studied. Quantitative mRNA expression of Coronin-1, Sp110, TLRs-1,-2,-4 and -6 was analysed in total blood cells <it>vs </it>an endogenous house-keeping gene.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mRNA expression of Coronin-1, Sp110 and TLR-2 was significantly higher in patients with active tuberculosis and subjects with latent disease compared to the uninfected ones. Positive linear correlation for the expression of those factors was only found in the infected populations.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggest that the up-regulation of Coronin-1 and Sp110, through a pathway that also includes TLR-2 up-regulation may be involved in the process of tuberculous infection in humans. However, further studies are needed, in order to elucidate whether the selective upregulation of these factors in the infected patients could serve as a specific molecular marker of tuberculosis.</p

    Development of a patient and institutional-based model for estimation of operative times for robot-assisted radical cystectomy: results from the International Robotic Cystectomy Consortium

    OBJECTIVES: To design a methodology to predict operative times for robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) based on variation in institutional, patient, and disease characteristics to help in operating room scheduling and quality control. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The model included preoperative variables and therefore can be used for prediction of surgical times: institutional volume, age, gender, body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, history of prior surgery and radiation, clinical stage, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, type, technique of diversion, and the extent of lymph node dissection. A conditional inference tree method was used to fit a binary decision tree predicting operative time. Permutation tests were performed to determine the variables having the strongest association with surgical time. The data were split at the value of this variable resulting in the largest difference in means for the surgical time across the split. This process was repeated recursively on the resultant data sets until the permutation tests showed no significant association with operative time. RESULTS: In all, 2 134 procedures were included. The variable most strongly associated with surgical time was type of diversion, with ileal conduits being 70 min shorter (P 66 RARCs) was important, with those with a higher volume being 55 min shorter (P < 0.001). The regression tree output was in the form of box plots that show the median and ranges of surgical times according to the patient, disease, and institutional characteristics. CONCLUSION: We developed a method to estimate operative times for RARC based on patient, disease, and institutional metrics that can help operating room scheduling for RARC
