On sequential multiscale inversion and data assimilation
Multiscale approaches are very popular for example for solving partial differential equations and in many applied fields dealing with phenomena which take place on different levels of detail. The broad idea of a multiscale approach is to decompose your problem into different scales or levels and to use these decompositions either for constructing appropriate approximations or to solve smaller problems on each of these levels, leading to increased stability or increased efficiency. The idea of sequential multiscale is to first solve the problem in a large-scale subspace and then successively move to finer scale spaces.
Our goal is to analyse the sequential multiscale approach applied to an inversion or state estimation problem. We work in a generic setup given by a Hilbert space environment. We work out the analysis both for an unregularized and a regularized sequential multiscale inversion. In general the sequential multiscale approach is not equivalent to a full solution, but we show that under appropriate assumptions we obtain convergence of an iterative sequential multiscale version of the method. For the regularized case we develop a strategy to appropriately adapt the regularization when an iterative approach is taken.
We demonstrate the validity of the iterative sequential multiscale approach by testing the method on an integral equation as it appears for atmospheric temperature retrieval from infrared satellite radiances

A localized adaptive particle filter within an operational NWP framework
Particle filters are well known in statistics. They have a long tradition in the framework of ensemble data assimilation (EDA) as well as Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. A key challenge today is to employ such methods in a high-dimensional environment, since the naĂŻve application of the classical particle filter usually leads to filter divergence or filter collapse when applied within the very high dimension of many practical assimilation problems (known as the curse of dimensionality). The goal of this work is to develop a localized adaptive particle filter (LAPF), which follows closely the idea of the classical MCMC or bootstrap-type particle filter, but overcomes the problems of collapse and divergence based on localization in the spirit of the local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LETKF) and adaptivity with an adaptive Gaussian resampling or rejuvenation scheme in ensemble space. The particle filter has been implemented in the data assimilation system for the global forecast model ICON at Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). We carry out simulations over a period of 1 month with a global horizontal resolution of 52 km and 90 layers. With four variables analyzed per grid point, this leads to 6.6 Ă— 106 degrees of freedom. The LAPF can be run stably and shows a reasonable performance. We compare its scores to the operational setup of the ICON LETKF

Development and application of a backscatter lidar forward operator for quantitative validation of aerosol dispersion models and future data assimilation
A new backscatter lidar forward operator was developed which is based on the distinct calculation of the aerosols’ backscatter and extinction properties. The forward operator was adapted to the COSMO-ART ash dispersion simulation of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010. While the particle number concentration was provided as a model output variable, the scattering properties of each individual particle type were determined by dedicated scattering calculations.
Sensitivity studies were performed to estimate the
uncertainties related to the assumed particle properties. Scattering calculations for several types of non-spherical particles required the usage of T-matrix routines. Due to the distinct calculation of the backscatter and extinction properties of the models’ volcanic ash size classes, the sensitivity studies could be made for each size class individually, which is not the case for forward models based on a fixed lidar ratio. Finally, the forward-modeled lidar profiles
have been compared to automated ceilometer lidar (ACL)
measurements both qualitatively and quantitatively while the attenuated backscatter coefficient was chosen as a suitable physical quantity. As the ACL measurements were not calibrated automatically, their calibration had to be performed using satellite lidar and ground-based Raman lidar measurements. A slight overestimation of the model-predicted volcanic ash number density was observed. Major requirements for future data assimilation of data from ACL have been identified, namely, the availability of calibrated lidar measurement data, a scattering database for atmospheric aerosols, a better representation and coverage of aerosols by the ash dispersion model, and more investigation in backscatter lidar forward operators which calculate the backscatter coefficient directly for each individual aerosol type. operator offers the flexibility to be adapted to a multitude of model systems and measurement setups
Intersubject Regularity in the Intrinsic Shape of Human V1
Previous studies have reported considerable intersubject variability in the three-dimensional geometry of the human primary visual cortex (V1). Here we demonstrate that much of this variability is due to extrinsic geometric features of the cortical folds, and that the intrinsic shape of V1 is similar across individuals. V1 was imaged in ten ex vivo human hemispheres using high-resolution (200 ÎĽm) structural magnetic resonance imaging at high field strength (7 T). Manual tracings of the stria of Gennari were used to construct a surface representation, which was computationally flattened into the plane with minimal metric distortion. The instrinsic shape of V1 was determined from the boundary of the planar representation of the stria. An ellipse provided a simple parametric shape model that was a good approximation to the boundary of flattened V1. The aspect ration of the best-fitting ellipse was found to be consistent across subject, with a mean of 1.85 and standard deviation of 0.12. Optimal rigid alignment of size-normalized V1 produced greater overlap than that achieved by previous studies using different registration methods. A shape analysis of published macaque data indicated that the intrinsic shape of macaque V1 is also stereotyped, and similar to the human V1 shape. Previoud measurements of the functional boundary of V1 in human and macaque are in close agreement with these results
Production of knowledge revisited - the impact of academic spin-offs on public research performance in Europe (PROKNOW): abbreviated description of the research project funded by the European Commission
"The EU-funded project 'Production of Knowledge Revisited: The Impact of Academic Spin-Offs on Public Research Performance in Europe (PROKNOW)' aims at analysing the interactions between public research institutions and academic spin-offs focussing on the impact of entrepreneurial activities on the academic research system. Based upon approaches in organisational sociology, science policy studies and science studies and analysing the gains and losses of spin-off activities for public research institutions, PROKNOW examines the relevance of public and private forms of knowledge in innovative processes of knowledge production. Academic spin-offs often epitomise innovative forms of knowledge production and are thus an exemplary topic to study innovation processes in the interaction of science, economy and society. PROKNOW proposes a European-wide comparison of research institutions in seven countries, including the three biggest research systems, Germany, France and the UK, and the -often considered to be innovative -systems of the Netherlands, Switzerland and Finland, and the associated candidate country Bulgaria. Institutionally, PROKNOW analyses different forms of public sector research institutions, university and extrauniversity institutions. In terms of economic sectors, the project focuses on life sciences, information sciences and nanotechnology. Thus, PROKNOW can help provide the institutional and organisational conditions for a profitable interaction between public research institutions and academic spin-offs." Frequency and Nature of Incidental Extra-Enteric Lesions Found on Magnetic Resonance Enterography (MR-E) in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD)
The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of extra-enteric findings in a large cohort of patients undergoing magnetic resonance enterography (MR-E) and to classify the clinical significance of these findings.We retrospectively analyzed 1154 MR-E performed in 1006 patients referred to our radiological department between 1999-2005. The reasons for referral were suspected or proven inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) (n = 710), further diagnostic work-up for small bowel disease because of non-specific abdominal symptoms (SBD; n = 182) or suspected small bowel malignancies (SBM; n = 114). All extra-enteric findings were reviewed by a radiologist and a gastroenterologist and were classified as having high, moderate, or low significance for further diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.The average age of all patients was 40+/-16 (Mean+/-SD) years (y) (IBD 35+/-13 y; SBD 49+/-16 y; SBM 57+/-15 y). A total of 1113 extra-enteric findings were detected in 600 of 1006 patients (59.6%). Of these findings 180 (16.2%) were judged as having a high, 212 (19.0%) a moderate and 721 (64.8%) a low significance. On a per group basis in patients with IBD 12.0% of the findings were of major clinical significance compared to 13.7% and 33.3% in patients with SBD and SBM, respectively. The most common major findings were abscesses (69.9%) in the IBD group and extraintestinal tumors, metastases or masses in the SBD and SBM groups (41.9% and 74.2%, respectively).MR-E reveals a substantial number of extra-enteric findings, supporting the role of a cross-sectional imaging method for the evaluation of the small bowel
Integration und Desintegration der Kulturen im europäischen Mittelalter
Das mittelalterliche Europa war keine christliche Einheitskultur, sondern geprägt von vielfältigen Prozessen des Kontakts und der Abgrenzung zwischen Kulturen, bei denen die drei monotheistischen Religionen Christentum, Judentum und Islam eine herausragende Rolle spielten. Seit 2005 erforscht das DFG-Schwerpunktprogramm "Integration und Desintegration der Kulturen im europäischen Mittelalter" die Geschichte Europas als Geschichte kultureller Differenzen. Der Band dokumentiert die Dynamiken und Erträge eines wissenschaftsorganisatorischen Experiments: Gegliedert in fächerübergreifende Arbeitsgruppen, erforschten 24 Einzelprojekte aus 14 Disziplinen Integrations- und Desintegrationsprozesse von Skandinavien bis Ägypten, von der Iberischen Halbinsel bis zu den Steppen Zentralasiens in komparativem Zugriff; sie präsentieren ihre Ergebnisse nun in Beiträgen, die von mehreren Autorinnen und Autoren gemeinsam verfasst worden sind. Dabei werden Begriffe wie "Kultur" problematisiert und schon eingeführte Konzepte wie "Integration/Desintegration", "Inklusion/Exklusion", "Hybridisierung" und "Transfer" als Instrumente transkultureller Mediävistik auf den Prüfstand gestellt. Das Ende der Laufzeit des Schwerpunktprogramms gibt zugleich Anlass, methodisch-theoretische Einsichten der gemeinsamen Forschung wie auch praktische Erfahrungen bei der transdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit zu bilanzieren
