Bayesian analysis of endogenous delay threshold models
We develop Bayesian methods of analysis for a new class of threshold autoregressive models: endogenous delay threshold. We apply our methods to the commonly used sunspot data set and find strong evidence in favor of the Endogenous Delay Threshold Autoregressive (EDTAR) model over linear and traditional threshold autoregressions

Space Transportation System solid rocket booster thrust vector control system
The Solid Rocket Booster, Thrust Vector Control (TVC) system was designed in accordance with the following requirements: self-contained power supply, failsafe operation, 20 flight uses after exposure to seawater landings, optimized cost, and component interchangeability. Trade studies were performed which led to the selection of a recirculating hydraulic system powered by Auxiliary Power Units (APU) which drive the hydraulic actuators and gimbal the solid rocket motor nozzle. Other approaches for the system design were studied in arriving at the recirculating hydraulic system powered by an APU. These systems must withstand the imposed environment and be usable for a minimum of 20 Space Transportation System flights with a minimum of refurbishment. The TVC system completed the required qualification and verification tests and is certified for the intended application. Substantiation data include analytical and test data
Gender-grade-gap zeroed out under a specific intro-physics assessment regime
Evidence is presented that offering introductory physics courses with an
explicit focus on mastery can reduce the gender gap to zero. Taken together
with a previous study showing that a concepts-first course may zero out another
demographic gap leads one to speculate that demographic grade gaps in
introductory physics are just artifacts of the design of the courses and that
none of these classes/grades should be assumed to be demographically neutral
Ab Initio study of neutron drops with chiral Hamiltonians
We report ab initio calculations for neutron drops in a 10 MeV external
harmonic-oscillator trap using chiral nucleon-nucleon plus three-nucleon
interactions. We present total binding energies, internal energies, radii and
odd-even energy differences for neutron numbers N = 2 - 18 using the no-core
shell model with and without importance truncation. Furthermore, we present
total binding energies for N = 8, 16, 20, 28, 40, 50 obtained in a
coupled-cluster approach. Comparisons with Green's Function Monte Carlo
results, where available, using Argonne v8' with three-nucleon interactions
reveal important dependences on the chosen Hamiltonian.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Computational studies of light acceptance and propagation in straight and curved multimodal active fibres
A Monte Carlo simulation has been performed to track light rays in
cylindrical multimode fibres by ray optics. The trapping efficiencies for skew
and meridional rays in active fibres and distributions of characteristic
quantities for all trapped light rays have been calculated. The simulation
provides new results for curved fibres, where the analytical expressions are
too complex to be solved. The light losses due to sharp bending of fibres are
presented as a function of the ratio of curvature to fibre radius and bending
angle. It is shown that a radius of curvature to fibre radius ratio of greater
than 65 results in a light loss of less than 10% with the loss occurring in a
transition region at bending angles of pi/8 rad.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figure
