    The language codes of ISO 639: A premature, ultimately unobtainable, and possibly damaging standardization

Post and Victor Friedman The language codes of ISO 639: A premature and possibly unobtainable standardization ISO 639 is an ambitious attempt to standardize and organize various types of references to the languages of the world. It is designed to be fully comprehensive and permanent; as such, it promises to greatly enhance the precision and reliability with which language materials can be archived, catalogued, and referenced in the literature, as well as the ease and precision with which such materials and references can be processed by machines and effectively located via search queries. There are, however, a number of serious problems with several components of ISO 639 as they are currently conceived. At a minimum, these are: (1) use of both The Ethnologue as the basis for ISO 639-3’s “three-letter codes” and of SIL as its registration authority is problematic for a number of reasons (2) in-principle “arbitrary” (but in fact not arbitrary) “mnemonic” labels of ISO 639-3 have the potential to enshrine offensive designations for language communities, and in fact currently do so (3) decision-making processes in ISO 639-3 are currently excessively centralized and privilege the views of a minority of the linguistics community (4) the in-principle “permanency” of language codes such as those of ISO 639-3 is fundamentally incompatible with the nature of human languages, which are demonstrably impermanent (5) the structure of ISO 639-3 has a serious potential to be misunderstood, misused, and in fact abused by decision-making bodies (such as arms of government in various political contexts) (6) ISO 639-5, which attempts to catalogue the genetic affiliations of the world’s languages, is highly premature, since there is nothing approaching agreement among specialists in a great number of cases (7) ISO 639-6, which attempts to catalogue language variation, is in principle impossible, unless it aims to extend to an analysis of the language use of every human being on Earth, living or dead On the basis of these observations, which we will illustrate by means of three detailed “case studies” from the Eastern Himalaya, the Burmese/Indian border region, and the Balkan region, we will argue that ISO 639 must be substantially re-conceived and re-organized before it can be supported by linguists.     The focused ion beam as an integrated circuit restructuring tool

    One of the capabilities of focused ion beam systems is ion milling. The purpose of this work is to explore this capability as a tool for integrated circuit restructuring. Methods for cutting and joining conductors are needed. Two methods for joining conductors are demonstrated. The first consists of spinning nitrocellulose (a self‐developing resist) on the circuit, ion exposing an area, say, 7×7 ÎŒm, then milling a smaller via with sloping sidewalls through the first metal layer down to the second, e‐beam evaporating metal, and then dissolving the nitrocellulose to achieve liftoff. The resistance of these links between two metal levels varied from 1 to 7 Ω. The second, simpler method consists of milling a via with vertical sidewalls down to the lower metal layer, then reducing the milling scan to a smaller area in the center of this via, thereby redepositing the metal from the lower layer on the vertical sidewall. The short circuit thus achieved varied from 0.4 to 1.5 Ω for vias of dimensions 3×3 ÎŒm to 1×1 ÎŒm, respectively. The time to mill a 1×1 ÎŒm via with a 68 keV Ga+ beam, of 220 Pa current is 60 s. In a system optimized for this application, this milling time is expected to be reduced by a factor of at least 100. In addition, cuts have been made in 1‐Όm‐thick Al films covered by 0.65 ÎŒm of SiO2. These cuts have resistances in excess of 20 MΩ. This method of circuit restructuring can work at dimensions a factor of 10 smaller than laser zapping and requires no special sites to be fabricated

    Type D Personality Associated With Increased Risk for Mortality in Adults With Congenital Heart Disease

    Background Type D personality has been previously shown to increase the risk for mortality in patients with acquired heart disease.ObjectiveWe aimed to compare mortality in adult patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) with and without type D.Methods Survival was assessed using prospective data from the Dutch national Congenital Corvitia registry for adults with CHD. Patients were randomly selected from the registry and characterized at inclusion in 2009 for the presence of type D using the DS14 questionnaire.Results One thousand fifty-five patients, with 484 (46%) males, a mean (SD) age of 41 (14) years, 613 (58%) having mild CHD, 348 (33%) having moderate CHD, and 94 (9%) having severe CHD, were included. Type D personality was present in 225 patients (21%). Type D was associated with an increased risk for all-cause mortality independent of age, sex, New York Heart Association class, number of prescribed medications, depression, employment status, and marital status (hazard ratio, 1.94; 95% confidence interval, 1.05–3.57; P = .033).Conclusion Type D personality was associated with an increased risk for all-cause mortality in adult patients with CHD

    Parametrization and Stress-Energy-Momentum Tensors in Metric Field Theories

    We give an exposition of the parametrization method of Kuchar [1973] in the context of the multisymplectic approach to field theory, as presented in Gotay and Marsden [2008a]. The purpose of the formalism developed herein is to make any classical field theory, containing a metric as a sole background field, generally covariant (that is, "parametrized," with the spacetime diffeomorphism group as a symmetry group) as well as fully dynamic. This is accomplished by introducing certain "covariance fields" as genuine dynamic fields. As we shall see, the multimomenta conjugate to these new fields form the Piola-Kirchhoff version of the stress-energy-momentum tensor field, and their Euler-Lagrange equations are vacuously satisfied. Thus, these fields have no additional physical content; they serve only to provide an efficient means of parametrizing the theory. Our results are illustrated with two examples, namely an electromagnetic field and a Klein-Gordon vector field, both on a background spacetime.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur

    Switching to Tenofovir Alafenamide, Coformulated With Elvitegravir, Cobicistat, and Emtricitabine, in HIV-Infected Patients With Renal Impairment: 48-Week Results From a Single-Arm, Multicenter, Open-Label Phase 3 Study

    BACKGROUND: Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) is a novel tenofovir prodrug with improved renal and bone safety compared with TDF-containing regimens. We report the 48 week safety and efficacy of a once-daily single tablet regimen of elvitegravir 150 mg (E), cobicistat 150 mg (C), emtricitabine 200 mg (F), and TAF 10 mg (E/C/F/TAF) in HIV-1-infected patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. METHODS: We enrolled virologically suppressed HIV-1-infected subjects with estimated creatinine clearance (CrCl) 30-69 mL/min in a single-arm, open-label study to switch regimens to E/C/F/TAF. The primary endpoint was the change from baseline in glomerular filtration rate estimated using various formulae. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01818596. FINDINGS: We enrolled and treated 242 patients with mean age 58 years, 18% Black, 39% hypertension, 14% diabetes. Through week 48, no significant change in estimated CrCl was observed. Two patients (0.8%) discontinued study drug for decreased creatinine clearance, neither had evidence of renal tubulopathy and both had uncontrolled hypertension. Subjects had significant improvements in proteinuria, albuminuria, and tubular proteinuria (P < 0.001 for all). Hip and spine bone mineral density significantly increased from baseline to week 48 (mean percent change +1.47 and +2.29, respectively, P < 0.05). Ninety-two percent (222 patients) maintained HIV-1 RNA <50 copies per milliliter at week 48. INTERPRETATION: Switch to E/C/F/TAF was associated with minimal change in GFR. Proteinuria, albuminuria and bone mineral density significantly improved. These data support the efficacy and safety of once daily E/C/F/TAF in HIV+ patients with mild or moderate renal impairment without dose adjustment
