Includes bibliographical references. The purpose of this study is to determine if female and male collegiate athletes are depicted equally on their university's athletic websites. Nine University athletic websites were analyzed, comparing the amount and type of articles and pictures between male and female athletes. The results suggest that male and female athletes are represented equally on collegiate athletic websites, with females tending to be overrepresented.B.S. (Bachelor of Science

Prepubertal gonadectomy in shelter cats : anaesthesia, surgery and effect of age at time of gonadectomy on health and behaviour

In Belgium, prepubertal gonadectomy (PPG), defined as gonadectomy well before sexual maturity, is not yet routinely performed in cats. Notwithstanding a number of experimental and clinical studies in the United States of America and the United Kingdom about early age neutering, timing of gonadectomy remains controversial. The objections from veterinarians raised against PPG pertain to animal health and welfare and can be summarized as concerns regarding technical challenges, issues of safety during anaesthesia and surgery, and possible short- and long-term complications on health and behaviour. To better understand the feasibility of PPG and to document short- and long-term effects on health and well-being of cats undergoing early age neutering, the Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment funded a large-scale project in shelter cats. For PPG to be fully accepted by the lay and veterinary community, the anaesthetic and surgical procedures should be as safe and efficient as those used for gonadectomy at traditional age (TAG). Moreover, health and behaviour issues should not be more common among PPG cats compared to TAG cats. The aims of this doctoral dissertation were three-fold: (1) to describe safe and efficient anaesthetic and surgical protocols to perform PPG and to compare those with TAG, (2) to investigate the relationship between age at gonadectomy and short- and long-term health issues in adopted shelter kittens (until 24 months of age), and (3) to assess short- and long-term effects of PPG on the behaviour in shelter cats (until 24 months after adoption). In this study, 800 shelter kittens were recruited and randomly assigned to two treatment groups using unequal group sizes: 2/3 PPG, between 8 to 12 weeks of age (0.7 to 1.4 kg), and 1/3 TAG, between 6 to 8 months of age

The Sterycat project is a scientific study financed by the Federal Public Service of Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment, in which the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine collaborated with seventeen Flemish animal shelters, to investigate the effect of prepubertal gonadectomy on the health and behavior of cats. To be able to efficiently integrate prepubertal gonadectomy of shelter cats in governmental policy, it is important to know the opinion on this topic of people in the field. For this purpose, at the end of the Sterycat project, a survey (16 questions, 70 copies in total) was distributed among shelter veterinarians and staff workers of the participating shelters. Thirty-five individuals completed the survey (10 shelter veterinarians, 25 staff workers). The majority of them (85%) were in favor of continuing prepubertal gonadectomy in shelter cats after the Sterycat project had ended. However, some respondents were concerned about potential complications due to the procedure (58%) and about viral disease outbreaks (72%). Whether prepubertal gonadectomy could be implemented successfully seemed to be dependent upon the financial feasibility and the development of a framework to prevent income loss for non-shelter veterinarians. Furthermore, to efficiently reduce the overpopulation of cats, private cat owners and municipalities would have to assume responsibility to prevent reproduction in cats. A positive perception of the feasibility of prepubertal gonadectomy and microchipping in cats was associated with the enthusiasm of the veterinarian, the increased chances of adoption of the kittens and with the fact that both procedures contributed to the decrease in cat population numbers. In turn, the degree with which prepubertal gonadectomy was considered important was associated with the type of shelter and the expectation of a better return for the shelter. These results indicate that most surveyed shelter veterinarians and staff workers support the idea of continuing prepubertal gonadectomy at their shelter, on the condition that the financial aspect of the procedure and the responsibility of others (private cat owners and municipalities) are taken into account

Anesthesie van kittens: een literatuuroverzicht met nadruk op de mogelijkheden in België

In Belgium, elective surgical procedures in very young small animals are rarely performed. Consequently, most veterinarians have little experience in anesthetizing pediatric patients. This article describes potential problems of anesthesia in kittens, which are mainly linked to their specific anatomy and physiology. Additionally, some practical anesthetic protocols are highlighted. Combinations with ketamine are practical, economical and efficient options
