    Discrete Breathers in One-Dimensional Diatomic Granular Crystals

    We report the experimental observation of discrete breathers in a one-dimensional diatomic granular crystal composed of compressed elastic beads that interact via Hertzian contact. We first characterize their effective linear spectrum both theoretically and experimentally. We then illustrate theoretically and numerically the modulational instability of the lower edge of the optical band. This leads to the dynamical formation of long-lived breather structures, whose families of solutions we compute throughout the linear spectral gap. Finally, we observe experimentally such localized breathing modes with quantitative characteristics that agree with our numerical results.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Intrinsic Energy Localization through Discrete Gap Breathers in One-Dimensional Diatomic Granular Crystals

    We present a systematic study of the existence and stability of discrete breathers that are spatially localized in the bulk of a one-dimensional chain of compressed elastic beads that interact via Hertzian contact. The chain is diatomic, consisting of a periodic arrangement of heavy and light spherical particles. We examine two families of discrete gap breathers: (1) an unstable discrete gap breather that is centered on a heavy particle and characterized by a symmetric spatial energy profile and (2) a potentially stable discrete gap breather that is centered on a light particle and is characterized by an asymmetric spatial energy profile. We investigate their existence, structure, and stability throughout the band gap of the linear spectrum and classify them into four regimes: a regime near the lower optical band edge of the linear spectrum, a moderately discrete regime, a strongly discrete regime that lies deep within the band gap of the linearized version of the system, and a regime near the upper acoustic band edge. We contrast discrete breathers in anharmonic FPU-type diatomic chains with those in diatomic granular crystals, which have a tensionless interaction potential between adjacent particles, and highlight in that the asymmetric nature of the latter interaction potential may lead to a form of hybrid bulk-surface localized solutions

    The determination of purity and viability of seeds has long been the major function of seed laboratories in the United States and other countries. Certain standard techniques have been developed on which rules and recommended procedures for seed analysis have been based. Until recently, as pointed out by the senior author (14, 15,) scant consideration has been given to the importance and significance of organisms carried in or on seeds, although Munn (11) as early as 1919 called the attention of seed analysts to their responsibility concerning the pathological condition of seeds. Since 1930 the large number of samples of field crop seeds received annually by the seed laboratory at Iowa State College has afforded an unusual opportunity to utilize certain phytopathological techniques in the determination of seeding value

    Insulation bonding test system

    A method and a system for testing the bonding of foam insulation attached to metal is described. The system involves the use of an impacter which has a calibrated load cell mounted on a plunger and a hammer head mounted on the end of the plunger. When the impacter strikes the insulation at a point to be tested, the load cell measures the force of the impact and the precise time interval during which the hammer head is in contact with the insulation. This information is transmitted as an electrical signal to a load cell amplifier where the signal is conditioned and then transmitted to a fast Fourier transform (FFT) analyzer. The FFT analyzer produces energy spectral density curves which are displayed on a video screen. The termination frequency of the energy spectral density curve may be compared with a predetermined empirical scale to determine whether a igh quality bond, good bond, or debond is present at the point of impact

    Locating bugs without looking back

    Bug localisation is a core program comprehension task in software maintenance: given the observation of a bug, e.g. via a bug report, where is it located in the source code? Information retrieval (IR) approaches see the bug report as the query, and the source code files as the documents to be retrieved, ranked by relevance. Such approaches have the advantage of not requiring expensive static or dynamic analysis of the code. However, current state-of-the-art IR approaches rely on project history, in particular previously fixed bugs or previous versions of the source code. We present a novel approach that directly scores each current file against the given report, thus not requiring past code and reports. The scoring method is based on heuristics identified through manual inspection of a small sample of bug reports. We compare our approach to eight others, using their own five metrics on their own six open source projects. Out of 30 performance indicators, we improve 27 and equal 2. Over the projects analysed, on average we find one or more affected files in the top 10 ranked files for 76% of the bug reports. These results show the applicability of our approach to software projects without history

    Measurement of the mass of the Ï„ lepton

    The mass of the τ lepton has been measured at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider using the Beijing Spectrometer. A search near threshold for e^+e^-→τ^+τ^- was performed. Candidate events were identified by requiring that one τ decay via τ→eνν¯, and the other via τ→μνν¯. The mass value, obtained from a fit to the energy dependence of the τ^+τ^- cross section, is m_τ=1776.9_(-0.5)^(+0.4)±0.2 MeV
