Adiabatic quantum metrology with strongly correlated quantum optical systems

    Get PDF
We show that the quasiadiabatic evolution of a system governed by the Dicke Hamiltonian can be described in terms of a self-induced quantum many-body metrological protocol. This effect relies on the sensitivity of the ground state to a small symmetry-breaking perturbation at the quantum phase transition, which leads to the collapse of the wave function into one of two possible ground states. The scaling of the final-state properties with the number of atoms and with the intensity of the symmetry-breaking field can be interpreted in terms of the precession time of an effective quantum metrological protocol. We show that our ideas can be tested with spin-phonon interactions in trapped ion setups. Our work points to a classification of quantum phase transitions in terms of the capability of many-body quantum systems for parameter estimation

Superfluid–Mott insulator transition and Bose–Einstein Condensation of phonons in ion traps

We show that transverse phonons in a set of trapped ions under the action of lasers are described by a Bose-Hubbard model whose parameters can be externally adjusted. The hopping of the phonons between different phonons is provided by the Coulomb interaction. On the other hand, the nonlinear terms in the interaction of the ions with a standing-wave provide us with the phonon-phonon interaction. We investigate the possibility of observing several quantum many-body phenomena, including (quasi) Bose-Einstein Condensation as well as a superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition

The localization of phonons in ion traps with controlled quantum disorder

We show that the vibrations of a chain of trapped ions offer an interesting route to explore the physics of disordered quantum systems. By preparing the internal state of the ions in a quantum superposition, we show how the local vibrational energy becomes a stochastic variable, its statistical properties inherited from the underlying quantum parallelism of the internal state. We describe a minimally perturbing measurement of the resonance fluorescence, which allows us to study effects such as Anderson localization without the need for ground-state cooling or individual addressing and thus paves the way for high-temperature ion experiments

Quantum simulation of the cooperative Jahn-Teller transition in 1D Ion crystals

    Get PDF
The Jahn-Teller effect explains distortions and nondegenerate energy levels in molecular and solid-state physics via a coupling of effective spins to collective bosons. Here we propose and theoretically analyze the quantum simulation of a many-body Jahn-Teller model with linear ion crystals subjected to magnetic field gradients. We show that the system undergoes a quantum magnetic structural phase transition which leads to a reordering of particle positions and the formation of a spin-phonon quasicondensate in mesoscopic ion chains

Towards electron-electron entanglement in Penning traps

Entanglement of isolated elementary particles other than photons has not yet been achieved. We show how building blocks demonstrated with one trapped electron might be used to make a model system and method for entangling two electrons. Applications are then considered, including two-qubit gates and more precise quantum metrology protocols

Nonequilibrium and nonperturbative dynamics of ultrastrong coupling in open lines

    Get PDF
The time and space resolved dynamics of a qubit with an Ohmic coupling to propagating 1D photons is studied, from weak coupling to the ultrastrong coupling regime. A nonperturbative study based on matrix product states shows the following results, (i) The ground state of the combined systems contains excitations of both the qubit and the surrounding bosonic field. (ii) An initially excited qubit equilibrates through spontaneous emission to a state, which under certain conditions is locally close to that ground state, both in the qubit and the field. (iii) The resonances of the combined qubit-photon system match those of the spontaneous emission process and also the predictions of the adiabatic renormalization [A. J. Leggett et al., Rev. Mod. Phys. 59, 1 (1987)]. Finally, nonperturbative ab initio calculations show that this physics can be studied using a flux qubit galvanically coupled to a superconducting transmission line

The use of mineral fertilizers in Cymbopogon martini (Palmarosa) crops has been implemented in order to increase biomass and essential oil yield. Palmarosa oil is rich in geraniol and geranyl acetate, molecules with high value in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Plants were obtained from the Seed Bank of the Centro Nacional de Investigación Agroindustrial de Plantas Aromaticas y Medicinales de la Univer-sidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) (Cenivam), Santander, Colombia. Seedlings were maintained under conditions of nursery for two months and then were taken to the experimental field, in which the survival rate in the new crop conditions was calculated. The crop was carried out in the Cenivam experimental area (07° 08’ 31.68”N, 73° 07’ 06.14W; 988 m.a.s.l.), in a sandy-soil clay loam. The aim of the study was to evaluate the biomass productivity and analyze the quality and yield of the essential oil obtained of the C. martini crop under three types of fertilizers: Nutrimon® 14-14-14, mineral NPK granular fertilizer for agricultural use for land application composed of ammoniacal nitrogen 10%, nitric nitrogen (4%), assimi-lable phosphorus (P2O5) (14%), and water soluble potassium (K2O) (14%), for treatments, 2, 4 and 6 g/plant were applied locally; and a treatment with 400 g of organic fertilizer were applied. A complete random block design, with thirteen treatments and three harvests and each one, consisting of three plants as replications was used. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance, comparing the means by Tukey test at 5% probability. No correlations between biomass and essential oil yield, according to the type of fertilizer applied, were observed, that suggests that treatments that increased the biomass did not neces-sarily represent higher essential oil yield, and treatments whose essential oil yield increments were signifi-cant, not necessarily corresponded to the largest biomass. It was found that organic or green fertilizers could be ideal for these crops, as they allowed relatively high oil yields, with higher percentages of geraniol and its acetate

A narrativa do conflito armado interno na Colômbia: um a construção política da história

This paper exposes critical reflections on the nature of binary categories of recognition and exclusion that have been hegemonic in the historical narration of the conflict in Colombia. From these antagonistic categories a narrow view of reality has been constructed, whose result was the intensification of hostilities between social participants that gradually radicalized. The established legacy after half a century of violence is that of a fragmented society that built a cultural ethos rooted in the hate of the adversary from the internalization of opposed values. The stereotyped views on the “other”, the enemy, and the archetype conceptions of the armed participants projected from two sides have been accompanied by simplifications of a reality.
