Enhanced superconductivity and lattice instability in Nb-Rh alloys
Superconductivity with transition temperature above 10 °K has been observed in a new Nb-Rh intermediate phase. The new metastable phase is obtained by liquid quenching the binary alloy or by the addition of a small percentage of carbon to form a stable ternary alloy
Potential one-forms for hyperk\"ahler structures with torsion
It is shown that an HKT-space with closed parallel potential 1-form has
-symmetry. Every locally conformally hyperk\"ahler manifold
generates this type of geometry. The HKT-spaces with closed parallel potential
1-form arising in this way are characterized by their symmetries and an

Flexible future learning opportunities for built environment professionals – A case study
This paper discusses the re-development of MSc Civil Engineering and Construction Management of a modern university in the Midlands of the UK in recent years, with the aim to offer flexible future learning opportunities for built environment professionals and address the sector’s skill shortage concerns (Augar Review, 2019 and 2021; DfE, 2020 and 2021; Foresight Review, 2017). The research method is insider action research and a case study approach. It involves interviews with external and internal stakeholders who contributed to this re-development and review of relevant documents related to the development. The research finding showed that both the internal and external stakeholders welcome the proposed re-development of postgraduate courses in Civil Engineering and Construction Management. They found the course offers opportunities for civil engineering and construction professionals to further develop their skills and to address government initiatives on flexible and future learning. The online offer of the course is attractive to potential students. It has brought a substantial financial return to the University and created a new international presence of the course and the University. This paper is a pilot study examining a university’s response to skill shortage and government proposal on flexible learning for adults through re-development and enhancement of the offer of the existing postgraduate courses. It has been argued that an insider research approach may have an advantage in accessing information compared to other research methods. The case study approach may have limitations on generalizability.
This research can be used as an example for other universities that aim to enhance their existing offers to address government initiatives and enhance financial viability
Formation of long-lived, scarlike modes near avoided resonance crossings in optical microcavities
We study the formation of long-lived states near avoided resonance crossings
in open systems. For three different optical microcavities (rectangle, ellipse,
and semi-stadium) we provide numerical evidence that these states are localized
along periodic rays, resembling scarred states in closed systems. Our results

Low-background temperature sensors fabricated on parylene substrates
Temperature sensors fabricated from ultra-low radioactivity materials have
been developed for low-background experiments searching for neutrinoless
double-beta decay and the interactions of WIMP dark matter. The sensors consist
of electrical traces photolithographically-patterned onto substrates of
vapor-deposited parylene. They are demonstrated to function as expected, to do
so reliably and robustly, and to be highly radio-pure. This work is a
proof-of-concept study of a technology that can be applied to broad class of
electronic circuits used in low-background experiments

The thesis project is a test bed for researching computational tools and design techniques specifically the performative and analytical tools used in finite element testing and computational fluid dynamics. The research territory will use ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture) as a historical gauge and as a point of departure to analyze implied lexicon and form through various computational tools, design techniques, and software platforms
Functional specialization of the yeast Rho1 GTP exchange factors
Rho GTPases are regulated in complex spatiotemporal patterns that may be dependent, in part at least, on the multiplicity of their GTP exchange factors (GEFs). Here, we examine the extent of and basis for functional specialization of the Rom2 and Tus1 GEFs that activate the yeast Rho1 GTPase, the ortholog of mammalian RhoA. First, we find that these GEFs selectively activate different Rho1-effector branches. Second, the synthetic genetic networks around ROM2 and TUS1 confirm very different global in vivo roles for these GEFs. Third, the GEFs are not functionally interchangeable: Tus1 cannot replace the essential role of Rom2, even when overexpressed. Fourth, we find that Rom2 and Tus1 localize differently: Rom2 to the growing bud surface and to the bud neck at cytokinesis; Tus1 only to the bud neck but in a distinct pattern. Finally, we find that these GEFs are dependent on different protein co-factors: Rom2 function and localization is largely dependent on Ack1, a SEL1 domain containing protein; Tus1 function and localization is largely dependent on the Tus1-interacting protein Ypl066w (which we name Rgl1). We have revealed a surprising level of diversity among the Rho1 GEFs that contributes another level of complexity to the spatiotemporal control of Rho1
