Stabilizing s-hole dimethyl interactions
Methyl groups bound to electronegative atoms, such as N or O, are recognized to participate in tetrel bonding as Lewis acids. On the other hand, the capability of methyl groups bound to electropositive atoms, such as B or Al, to act as Lewis bases has been recently reported. Herein, we analyze the combination of these two behaviors to establish attractive methyl···methyl interactions. We have explored the Cambridge Structural Database to find experimental examples of these dimethyl-bound systems, finding a significant degree of directionality in the relative disposition of the two methyl groups. Moreover, we have carried out a comprehensive computational analysis at the DFT level of the dimethyl interactions, including the natural bond orbital, energy decomposition analysis, and topological analysis of the electron density (QTAIM and NCI). The dimethyl interaction is characterized as weak yet attractive and based on electrostatics, with a non-negligible contribution from orbital charge transfer and polarization
EDROOM: a free tool for the UML2 component based design and automatic code generation of tiny embedded real time system
International audienceThe use of tiny real time kernels to develop embedded systems is broadly extended. They offer basic services with small overhead footprints in the final product. Usually, these kind of kernels are compliant with the POSIX 1003.13 specification. The use of graphical modelling and automatic code generation tools for developing these kind of small software embedded system if often not considered for several reasons: they are expensive, the learning curve to obtain benefits is often large and finally the generated code usually does not fit well with the platform or exceed the desired size. In this paper we present the adaptation of a free tool, known as EDROOM, to develop this kind of real time software system. EDROOM is inspired on the ROOM modelling language and provides graphical modelling and automatic Embedded C++ code generation. EDROOM is compliant with the new UML2 graphical notation for component based system design and hierarchical behaviour. The new version of EDROOM is a cross development multiplatform generation tool and includes facilities for static control of all resources in order to completely avoid the use of dynamic memory. Our tool has been used in the software development of a small satellite (NANOSAT-01) which is fully functional nowadays. The tool is free distributed in conjunction with a group of code test bench that can be used to validate any port to another architecture
Steinberg modules and Donkin pairs
We prove that in positive characteristic a module with good filtration for a
group of type E6 restricts to a module with good filtration for a subgroup of
type F4. (Recall that a filtration of a module for a semisimple algebraic group
is called good if its layers are dual Weyl modules.) Our result confirms a
conjecture of Brundan for one more case. The method relies on the canonical
Frobenius splittings of Mathieu. Next we settle the remaining cases, in
characteristic not 2, with a computer-aided variation on the old method of
Donkin.Comment: 16 pages; proof of Brundan's conjecture adde
Tissue Engineering Strategies for Myocardial Regeneration: Acellular Versus Cellular Scaffolds?
Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in industrialized nations with myocardial infarction (MI) contributing to at least one fifth of the reported deaths. The hypoxic environment eventually leads to cellular death and scar tissue formation. The scar tissue that forms is not mechanically functional and often leads to myocardial remodeling and eventual heart failure. Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine principles provide an alternative approach to restoring myocardial function by designing constructs that will restore the mechanical function of the heart. In this review, we will describe the cellular events that take place after an MI and describe current treatments. We will also describe how biomaterials, alone or in combination with a cellular component, have been used to engineer suitable myocardium replacement constructs and how new advanced culture systems will be required to achieve clinical success

Sleep During Menopausal Transition: A 10-year Follow-Up
Study ObjectivesA 10-year observational follow-up study to evaluate the changes in sleep architecture during the menopausal transition.MethodsFifty-seven premenopausal women (mean age 46 years, SD 0.9) were studied at baseline and after a 10-year follow-up. At both time points, polysomnography (PSG) was performed, and the serum follicle-stimulating hormone (S-FSH) concentration was measured. Linear regression models were used to study the effects of aging and menopause (assessed as change in S-FSH) on sleep.ResultsAfter controlling for body mass index, vasomotor, and depressive symptoms, higher S-FSH level was associated with longer sleep latency (B 0.45, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.07 to 0.83). Aging of 10 years was associated with shorter sleep latency (B −46.8, 95% CI: −77.2 to −16.4), shorter latency to stage 2 sleep (B −50.6, 95% CI: −85.3 to −15.9), decreased stage 2 sleep (B −12.4, 95% CI: −21.4 to −3.4), and increased slow-wave sleep (B 12.8, 95% CI: 2.32 to 23.3) after controlling for confounding factors.ConclusionsThis study suggests that PSG measured sleep of middle-aged women does not worsen over a 10-year time span due to the menopausal transition. The observed changes seem to be rather age- than menopause-dependent
Generation of second harmonic in off-diagonal magneto-impedance in Co-based amorphous ribbons
The off-diagonal magneto-impedance in Co-based amorphous ribbons was measured
using a pick-up coil wound around the sample. The ribbons were annealed in air
or in vacuum in the presence of a weak magnetic field. The evolution of the
first and second harmonics in the pick-up coil voltage as a function of the
current amplitude was studied. At low current amplitudes, the first harmonic
dominates in the frequency spectrum of the voltage, and at sufficiently high
current amplitudes, the amplitude of the second harmonic becomes higher than
that of the first harmonic. For air-annealed ribbons, the asymmetric two-peak
behaviour of the field dependences of the harmonic amplitudes was observed,
which is related to the coupling between the amorphous phase and surface
crystalline layers appearing after annealing. For vacuum-annealed samples, the
first harmonic has a maximum at zero external field, and the field dependence
of the second harmonic exhibits symmetric two-peak behaviour. The experimental
results are interpreted in terms of a quasi-static rotational model. It is
shown that the appearance of the second harmonic in the pick-up coil voltage is
related to the anti-symmetrical distribution of the transverse field induced by
the current. The calculated dependences are in a qualitative agreement with the
experimental data.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
Solar photocatalysis for water disinfection: Materials and reactor design
As of 2010, access to clean drinking water is a human right according to UN regulations. Nevertheless, the number of people living in areas without safe drinking water is predicted to increase by three billion by the end of this decade. Several recent cases of E. coli and Cryptosporidium contamination in drinking water are also reported in a number of advanced countries. Therefore ensuring the potability of drinking water is urgent, but highly challenging to both the developing and developed world in the future. A combination of solar disinfection and photocatalysis technology offers real possibilities for removing lethal pathogenic microroganisms from drinking water. The time taken for the conventional SODIS process can be greatly reduced by semiconductor (e.g. TiO2, ZnO, nano-heterojunctions) based photocatalysis. This review addresses the fundamental reaction mechanism, advances in materials synthesis and selection and recent developments in the reactor design for solar energy driven photocatalysis using titanium dioxide. The major advantage of using photo-reactors is that they enhance disinfection by increasing photon flux into the photocatalyst. Other major factors affecting such efficiency of solar-based photocatalysis such as the illuminated volume/total volume ratio, catalyst load and flow rate, are discussed in detail. The significance of using immobilised catalysts over the catalyst powder in slurries is also highlighted. It is noted that, despite encouraging early field studies, the commercialisation and mass production of solar photocatalysis systems remains highly challenging. Recommendations for future directions for addressing issues such as mass transfer, requirement of a standard test method, photo-reactors design and visible light absorption by TiO2 coatings are also discussed
Safety in wine production. A pilot study on the quality evaluation of prosecco wine in the framework of ue regulation
In Italy, wine production is considered a sector of excellence, where the wines’ appreciable sensory features are favored by environmental factors, including weather and climate conditions, which benefit territories with a specific vocation. The whole chain involves many economic and agri-food sector operators, and requires an in-depth assessment of specific risks for identifying critical points, keeping the entire production process under control, and ensuring product traceability. This article describes the results of a pilot study conducted in the Prosecco DOCG (Designations of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) area, concerning the detection of residues of plant protection products in fifty wine bottles. Although considerably below the maximum residue levels, all the samples tested were positive, ranging from two to five active substances detected in each sample. In addition to the provisions of the European Community legislation, this paper critically evaluates some best practices models that are already used by the Wine Federations of Italy, with the aim of identifying advantages of and areas for improvement in production methods, applicable to raw materials reception, rasping, storage, and bottling phases, in order to guarantee product safety and quality
