    The Epistemology of Necessity

    The thesis examines the direct reference theory of proper names and natural kind terms as expounded by Saul Kripke, Hilary Putnam and others and finds that it has not succeeded in replacing some kind of description theory of the reference of such terms - although it does concede that the traditional Fregean theory is not quite correct. It is argued that the direct reference theory is mistaken on several counts. First of all it is question-begging. Secondly, it is guilty of a 'use/mention' confusion. And thirdly, and most importantly, it fails to deal with the notion of understanding. The notion of understanding is crucial to the present thesis - specifically, what is understood by a proper name or natural kind term. It is concluded that sense (expressed in the form of descriptions) is at least necessary for reference, which makes a significant difference to Kripke's claim that there are necessary a posteriori truths as well as contingent a priori truths. It is also argued that sense could be sufficient for reference, if it is accepted that it is speakers who effect reference. In this sense, sense determines reference. The thesis therefore not only argues against the account of reference given by the direct reference theorists, it also gives an account of how proper names and natural kind terms actually do function in natural language. As far as the epistemology of necessity is concerned the thesis concludes that Kripke (along with many others) has not succeeded in establishing the existence of the necessary a posteriori nor the contingent a priori from the theory of direct reference. Whether such truths can be established by some other means, or in principle, is not the concern of the thesis; although the point is made that, if a certain view of sense is accepted, then questions of necessity and a priority seem inappropriate

    Quantum capacitance and charge sensing of a superconducting double dot

A.J.F. is supported by a Hitachi Research fellowship.We study the energetics of a superconducting double dot, by measuring both the quantum capacitance of the device and the response of a nearby charge sensor. We observe different behaviour for odd and even charge states and describe this with a model based on the competition between the charging energy and the superconducting gap. We also find that, at finite temperatures, thermodynamic considerations have a significant effect on the charge stability diagram.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Use of [1 or 3-3H, U-14c]glucose to estimate the synthesis of glycerolipids via acyl dihydroxyacetone phosphate

    SummaryBHK-21-cl3 fibroblasts were incubated with [1-3H, U-14c]glucose or [3-3H, U-14c]glucose to produce intracellular [3H]NADPH via the phosphogluconate pathway. 3H and 14C were then determined at the three positions of glycerol in glycerol phosphate, saponifiable glycerolipids, alkyl ether glycerolipids and plasmalogens. The 3H/14C ratio at C-2 in glycerol of saponifiable glycerolipids is 2-10 fold greater than in glycerol phosphate and approaches the ratio found in ether-containing glycerolipids.     Greater Fructose Consumption Is Associated with Cardiometabolic Risk Markers and Visceral Adiposity in Adolescents

    Though adolescents consume more fructose than any other age group, the relationship between fructose consumption and markers of cardiometabolic risk has not been established in this population. We determined associations of total fructose intake (free fructose plus one-half the intake of free sucrose) with cardiometabolic risk factors and type of adiposity in 559 adolescents aged 14–18 y. Fasting blood samples were measured for glucose, insulin, lipids, adiponectin, and C-reactive protein. Diet was assessed with 4–7 24-h recalls and physical activity (PA) was determined by accelerometry. Fat-free soft tissue (FFST) mass and fat mass were measured by DXA. The s.c. abdominal adipose tissue (SAAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) were assessed using MRI. Multiple linear regression, adjusting for age, sex, race, Tanner stage, FFST mass, fat mass, PA, energy intake, fiber intake, and socioeconomic status, revealed that fructose intake was associated with VAT (β = 0.13; P = 0.03) but not SAAT (P = 0.15). Significant linear upward trends across tertiles of fructose intake were observed for systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, and C-reactive protein after adjusting for the same covariates (all P-trend 0.05). In adolescents, higher fructose consumption is associated with multiple markers of cardiometabolic risk, but it appears that these relationships are mediated by visceral obesity
