    Mass customization allows firms to produce only things their customers want (or produce after they have orders in hand). This approach, make-to-order, brings many benefits to firms in terms of cost and profit because of lower inventory levels, maximum sales, elimination of material waste, flexible production and, most of all, customer satisfaction. However, mass customization may not be the panacea for all organizations. While some companies are very successful with mass customization, others are not.  This paper illustrates that mass customization strategies depend on an understanding of the conditions in each industry

    FPGA Sequencer for Radar Altimeter Applications

    A sequencer for a radar altimeter provides accurate attitude information for a reliable soft landing of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL). This is a field-programmable- gate-array (FPGA)-only implementation. A table loaded externally into the FPGA controls timing, processing, and decision structures. Radar is memory-less and does not use previous acquisitions to assist in the current acquisition. All cycles complete in exactly 50 milliseconds, regardless of range or whether a target was found. A RAM (random access memory) within the FPGA holds instructions for up to 15 sets. For each set, timing is run, echoes are processed, and a comparison is made. If a target is seen, more detailed processing is run on that set. If no target is seen, the next set is tried. When all sets have been run, the FPGA terminates and waits for the next 50-millisecond event. This setup simplifies testing and improves reliability. A single vertex chip does the work of an entire assembly. Output products require minor processing to become range and velocity. This technology is the heart of the Terminal Descent Sensor, which is an integral part of the Entry Decent and Landing system for MSL. In addition, it is a strong candidate for manned landings on Mars or the Moon

    Scientific progress is driven by the availability of information, which makes it essential that data be broadly, easily and rapidly accessible to researchers in every field. In addition to being good scientific practice, provision of supporting data in a convenient way increases experimental transparency and improves research efficiency by reducing unnecessary duplication of experiments. There are, however, serious constraints that limit extensive data dissemination. One such constraint is that, despite providing a major foundation of data to the advantage of entire community, data producers rarely receive the credit they deserve for the substantial amount of time and effort they spend creating these resources. In this regard, a formal system that provides recognition for data producers would serve to incentivize them to share more of their data. The process of data citation, in which the data themselves are cited and referenced in journal articles as persistently identifiable bibliographic entities, is a potential way to properly acknowledge data output. The recent publication of several sorghum genomes in Genome Biology is a notable first example of good data citation practice in the field of genomics and demonstrates the practicalities and formatting required for doing so. It also illustrates how effective use of persistent identifiers can augment the submission of data to the current standard scientific repositories

    The stock market reaction to losing or gaining foreign private issuer status

    The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission designates foreign-domiciled firms with securities trading in the U.S. markets as either foreign private issuers (FPIs) or domestic filers and permits exemptions from U.S. domestic securities regulation for firms that qualify as FPIs. We study the stock market reaction to foreign-domiciled firms that lose or gain FPI status for an arguably exogenous reason while maintaining their cross-listing status. After loss of FPI status, foreign firms are required to comply with U.S. domestic issuers’ continuous filing requirements, such as filing quarterly financial statements using U.S. GAAP, disclosure of insider trading, and compliance with corporate governance requirements of U.S. domestic issuers. We document a significantly positive market reaction when foreign firms lose their exemptions and must comply with regulatory requirements of U.S. domestic issuers. Further, we find that the market reacts negatively to an increase in financial statement requirements and reacts positively to fully adopting U.S. corporate governance requirements
