Paul F. Lazarsfeld: fundador de uma multinacional científica

Este artigo examina os condicionantes sociais da carreira de Paul F. Lazarsfeld, buscando determinar os fatores de ruptura e de continuidade que a caracterizam. Na primeira parte, analisa a juventude de Paul F. Lazarsfeld a partir de sua relação com os meios socialistas e judeus de Viena. Na segunda parte, estuda as reações diferenciais à emigração, apoiando-se particularmente na comparação entre as atitudes opostas de Theodor Adorno e de Paul Lazarsfeld. Em seguida, analisa as capacidades específicas que permitiram a Lazarsfeld fundar uma nova forma de empreendimento intelectual, assentado sobre uma divisão racional do trabalho e uma organização quase industrial da produção intelectual, o que foi possível graças ao uso de uma metodologia positivista que segmentava e mecanizava as diferentes operações intelectuais. Por fim, o trabalho examina as estratégias por meio das quais, apoiando-se sobre a política das fundações privadas, Lazarsfeld contribuiu para exportar para a Europa do Leste e do Oeste a sociologia empirista americana e, ao mesmo tempo, o modelo de relações que associa a pesquisa social a agentes econômicos e políticos, tal como se constituiu nos Estados Unidos durante os anos 1920 e 1930. Institutionalisierung, Wachstum und Wandel der heutigen französischen Soziologie

In dem Beitrag werden die aktuellen theoretischen Diskussionen der französischen Soziologie und ihre Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten abgeschätzt. Die relativ dauerhafte Struktur des Feldes soziologischer Produktion und die interne Entwicklung des Forschungspersonals sowie politische Faktoren, die in das wissenschaftliche Feld strukturierend eingreifen, stecken den Rahmen der Einschätzung ab. Indem die institutionelle, finanzielle und intellektuelle Entwicklung der französischen Soziologie dargestellt wird, werden einige Strukturelemente des soziologischen Feldes herausgearbeitet. Dabei wird deutlich, daß sich die inhaltliche Entwicklung der Soziologie in Schüben vollzogen hat, die in engem Zusammenhang mit ihrer institutionellen Verankerung stehen. Es wird festgestellt, daß stagnierende Finanzen kombiniert mit einer Zunahme des Forschungspersonals eine Orientierung hin zu qualitativen Methoden und die Integration des historischen Ansatzes in die soziologische Arbeit begünstigt haben. Anhand neuerer Forschungsarbeiten wird der aktuelle Trend in der Soziologie skizziert, der als eine wissenschaftlich streng objektivierende Schule bezeichnet wird. Es wird deutlich, daß trotz theoretischer Ausstrahlungskraft die Grenzen des soziologischen Feldes immer enger gezogen werden, weil anwendungsorientierte Arbeiten unter andere Disziplinen subsumiert werden. Stagnating finances combined with the increase in personnel on permanent research positions has favored an orientation towards qualitative methods and the integration of historical concerns into the sociologists tend to label themselves 'political scientists' and survey work is located in public administrations rather than in academic centers for excellence. The growing intellectual prestige of some sociological schools might well be linked to the discipline's isolation from outside clients and its incapacity to conquer a specific labor market outside academia.' Uma sociologia em ato dos intelectuais: os combates de Karl Kraus

A posição que Karl Kraus ocupou no campo intelectual austríaco é única na história dos intelectuais. Em vez de tentar reconstruir seu pensamento como uma teoria, é possível interpretá-lo como um revelador das regras do jogo que caracterizam o campo intelectual. Os escritos de Kraus sugerem muito mais uma releitura no sentido de uma sociologia-ação, que lança mão de técnicas de provocação para tornar visíveis as sanções a que ficam expostos aqueles que atrapalham o jogo combinado de dissimulação das relações entre intelectuais e poder. A análise das intervenções de Kraus possibilita vincular suas lutas a fenômenos de crise do campo intelectual. Inhibiting the inhibition

The precedence effect describes the phenomenon whereby echoes are spatially fused to the location of an initial sound by selectively suppressing the directional information of lagging sounds (echo suppression). Echo suppression is a prerequisite for faithful sound localization in natural environments but can break down depending on the behavioral context. To date, the neural mechanisms that suppress echo directional information without suppressing the perception of echoes themselves are not understood. We performed in vivo recordings in Mongolian gerbils of neurons of the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL), a GABAergic brainstem nucleus that targets the auditory midbrain, and show that these DNLL neurons exhibit inhibition that persists tens of milliseconds beyond the stimulus offset, so-called persistent inhibition (PI). Using in vitro recordings, we demonstrate that PI stems from GABAergic projections from the opposite DNLL. Furthermore, these recordings show that PI is attributable to intrinsic features of this GABAergic innervation. Implementation of these physiological findings into a neuronal model of the auditory brainstem demonstrates that, on a circuit level, PI creates an enhancement of responsiveness to lagging sounds in auditory midbrain cells. Moreover, the model revealed that such response enhancement is a sufficient cue for an ideal observer to identify echoes and to exhibit echo suppression, which agrees closely with the percepts of human subjects
