This article examines fiction, and in particular serialized translations, in the Slovenian-American newspaper Prosveta (Enlightenment) during its first decade (1916–1926) and compares it with three Czech-American newspapers in this regard. The comparisons establish—on the background of literary history and journalistic practices—the importance of fiction in immigrant newspapers at that time. The purposes of publishing translations in Prosveta are also considered as they relate to ethnic community building and an extension of nation-building in the United States. The newspaper is viewed as a community-building institution that featured significant reader contributions.Avtor v članku preučuje leposlovje, še posebej prevedena feljtonska dela, v slovensko-ameriškem časopisu Prosveta v prvem desetletju njegovega izhajanja (1916–1926) in ga v tem pogledu primerja s tremi drugimi češko-ameriškimi časopisi.

Prispevek preučuje, kako sta digitalni način produkcije in distribucije vplivala na vsebinski vidik časopisnih prispevkov v zadnjih petnajstih letih in kakšni so učinki tega na distribucijo časopisa v zadnjih petih letih. Podana bo tudi primerjava z drugimi podobnimi časopisi v ZDA

    Imagining Slovene Literary History.

This article applies Hayden White's theory of tropes as presented Metahistory: the historiological imagination in nineteenth-century Europe (1973) to select major works of Slovene literary history in order to elucidate their ideological stance. White's theory is an obvious if underutilized tool for clarifying the ideological implications of historical writing, which have received increased scrutiny in this decade. Based upon the arrangement of materials in the example of Zgodovina slovenskega slovstva (1968-1970) by Jože Pogačnik and Franc Zadravec, the article proposes that the work has a conservative outlook (i.e. telological view favoring the status quo) that is seemingly shared with other prominent histories of Slovene literature

    Revija Slovene Studies (ZDA)

This article describes the history of the journal Slovene Studies and presents ideas for its future. The journal is a scholarly publication of the Society for Slovene Studies, which was founded by a group of scholars in New York in 1973. The journal began to appear in 1975 as Papers in Slovene Studies and was renamed Slovene Studies in 1978. It is thus approaching its fortieth year of publication. The SSLLC played an indirect but key role in the journal\u27s development. Colleagues at the Faculty of Arts and seminar organisers have been authors of articles in the journal, as have scholars from other parts of the University of Ljubljana, the University of Maribor, the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Institute of Contemporary History, and other European and North American academic institutions. Likewise, SSS members, including the journal%s editors, have been attending the SSLLC for decades. The latter can attest that participation in the SSLLC has influenced their work as editors

Članek prinaša pregled objav daljših proznih del v slovensko-ameriških časopisih Glas svobode (1902-1908), Glasilo Slovenske narodne podporne jednote (1908-1916) in Prosveta (1908-) med letoma 1904 in 1930. V njem želimo prikazati vpliv kontekstualizacije slovenske literature v omenjenih dveh časopisih, ki sta sicer objavljala raznovrstna leposlovna dela, na slovenske izseljenske bralce v ZDA.The paper presents an overview of long prose publications in the Slovene-American periodicals Glas svobode (1902-1908), Glasilo Slovenske narodne podporne jednote (1908-1916), and Prosveta (1908-) between 1904 and 1930. The aim of the article is to show how emigre readers may have experienced Slovene literature in the context of the periodicals\u27 varied literary content

    Liberalizem in slovenska literatura

    No full text
The article investigates possible connections between the writer\u27s liberal political views and the topic and motivation for his last longer literary work. Liberalism is understood as political thought in the European and Slovene contexts, which has been drawing attention in the recent decade, and not just as partisan politics at that

Odzivi bralcev na osebna imena v slovenskih novelističnih besedilih

This study reports the results of surveys of Slovene and English speakers’ responses to the sounds of fictional characters’ names. Responses were measured with two kinds of surveys – implicit and explicit – that gauged how readers reacted to the names of characters in Slovene rural novellas of the 19th and 20th centuries. The focus was on the initial sounds of names. The hypothesis was that certain sounds correlate with positive and negative names and that Slovene and English speakers would respond similarly to names of positive and negative fictional characters. If supported, the hypothesis justifies the practice of preserving personal names in translation. Evidence from the surveys showed that Slovene and English speakers’ responses to personal names were similar to a high degree.V razpravi so predstavljeni odzivi slovenskih in angleških govorcev na zvočno podobo imen literarnih likov.

The article considers translators’ practice of leaving personal names in translations as they appear in the original. A name is the primary characteristic of a literary character that the reader encounters, and a literary character often represents an entire work in the reader’s memory, frequently appearing in the title (e.g., Anna Karenina or Oliver Twist). The article weighs the effects of using original names in translations, including their phonetic impression, with a focus on translations from Slovenian, and it concludes that translators into English have gradually come to preserve Slovenian spellings
