Materials chemistry under high pressures - Some recent aspects
Among the thermodynamic parameters governing the preparation of novel materials, temperature (T) and pressure (p) play an important role. In Materials Chemistry, the synthesis of materials needs energy in order to enhance the diffusion of atoms to the equilibrium positions required by the specific structure and to induce the formation of chemical bonds..
Electronic band structure of novel tetragonal BiOCuS as a parent phase for novel layered superconductors
Very recently, the tetragonal BiOCuS was synthesized and declared as a new
superconducting system with Fe-oxypnictide - related structure. Here, based on
first-principle FLAPW-GGA calculations, the structural parameters, electronic
bands picture, density of states and electron density distribution for BiOCuS
are investigated for the first time. Our results show that, as distinct from
related metallic-like FeAs systems, BiOCuS phase behaves as an ionic
semiconductor with the calculated indirect band gap at about 0.48 eV. The
superconductivity for BiOCuS may be achieved exclusively by doping of this
phase. Our preliminary results demonstrate that as a result of hole doping, the
[CuS] blocks become conducting owing to mixed Cu 3d + S 3p bands located near
the Fermi level. For the hole doped BiOCuS the Fermi surface adopts a
quasi-two-dimensional character, similarly to FeAs SCs.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Ce4Ag3Ge4O0.5 - chains of oxygen-centered OCe2Ce2/2] tetrahedra embedded in a CeAg3Ge4] intermetallic matrix
The oxidation of an intermetallic phase under high-pressure/high-temperature conditions led to the synthesis of Ce4Ag3Ge4O0.5 exhibiting OCe2Ce2/2] tetrahedral chains, in which the oxygen atoms statistically occupy the tetrahedral centres. Starting from a 1 : 1 : 1 CeAgGe precursor (NdPtSb type), a multianvil high-pressure/high-temperature experiment at 11.5 GPa and 1250-1300 degrees C revealed Ce4Ag3Ge4O0.5, crystallizing in the space group Pnma with the following lattice parameters: a = 2087.3(4), b = 439.9(1), and c = 1113.8(2) pm. Magnetic measurements showed Curie-Weiss behavior above 100 K with an experimental magnetic moment of 2.42 mu B per Ce atom, close to the value for the free Ce3+ ion, clearly indicating trivalent cerium in Ce4Ag3Ge4O0.5. Full potential GGA+U band structure calculations resulted in metallic properties and a magnetic ground state with one unpaired 4f-electron per cerium in agreement with the experiments
Impairment and restrictions in possibly benign multiple sclerosis
Objective
The aim was to describe a broad range of health dimensions in possibly benign multiple sclerosis (MS) hypothesizing that despite some limitations there is a high adaptation to the disease.
Methods
All patients from an outpatient university clinic data registry with an Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) ≤3.5 and disease duration ≥15 years were addressed in a cross-sectional study. Physical impairment, neuropsychological functioning but also influence on activities and patient reported outcome measures including coping were studied.
Results
One hundred and twenty-five patients could be included (mean EDSS: 2.8; mean disease duration: 24 years). Cognitive impairment was minor (8%) but fatigue (73%) and depression (46%) were prevalent. Nevertheless, QOL and daily activities seemed to be less affected. Patients showed high social support, coping abilities, and sense of coherence, which was predictive for their perceived benignity of the disease. Based on the EDSS alone, we estimated the rate of benign MS after 15 years of MS as high as 23% decreasing to 16% if cognition was included in the definition. However, cognitive performance was not relevantly associated with other outcomes.
Conclusion
Common benign MS definitions seem to simplify a complex disease picture where different impairments and personal resources lead to more or less impact on people’s lives
