Strain measurement at the knee ligament insertion sites

We describe the modification of an existing method of ligament strain measurement at the knee joint in detail. At ten fresh joint specimens we used that technique where strain gauges are attached to the ligamentous insertions and origins. We both improved the preparation of the attachment site and the application of the strain gauges. In a special apparatus the specimens were moved from 0degrees extension to 100degrees flexion while simulating muscle strength and axial force. Testing was performed at the posterior cruciate ligament with both intact and transsected anterior cruciate ligament. In contrast to other existing techniques it does not affect the motion of the joint or the integrity and the function of the ligaments. Unlike the original description of that method we could register a loading behaviour of the posterior cruciate ligament that is similar to those reported in the literature

The continuing development of new, highly sophisticated materials for the articulating surfaces of total hip endoprostheses involves the need for testing, not only of biocompatibility and dynamic loadability, but also of tribological properties (friction, wear, lubrication). For decades, the wear resistance of these materials has been tested in wear simulators. In consequence of the currently often widely differing test methods, the technical committee (TC 150) of the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) has been concerned to develop an International Standard (ISO/FDIS 14242 1 and 2: Implants for Surgery - wear of total hip joint prostheses - on the basis of kinetic and kinematic data from gait analysis. This new standard will be the basis for ensuring the comparability of scientific data obtained from tribological. testing of total hip endoprotheses. The new hip simulator, E-SIM, presented in this paper, complies with the currently published FDIS (Final Draft International Standard), and enables testing in accordance with these specifications

Banddehnungsmessung am Kniegelenk - Der Dehnungsmeßstreifen und seine Alternativen

Those techniques for measuring ligament tension at the knee joint that are most commonly cited and easiest to carry out are discussed, These include four techniques based on the use of strain gauges. Apart from the Omega transducer and the buckle transducer, there is also the tendon force transducer, and the application of strain gauges to the bony ligament insertion sites, Other indirect measuring methods considered are the mercury strain transducer and the Hall effect transducer. The parameter measured with all of these methods is fluctuating current or voltage, which is then correlated with ligament tension. Three direct measurements are also discussed: the separation distances of marked fibres of the ligaments, replacement of fibres by threads, and a load cell/bone plug construction. The measured value is equated with the effective change in ligament length

Revolutionary Self-Sustaining Pasture-Crop Rotation Systems Developed by Researcher-Farmer Collaboration for Southern Australian Farming Systems

Mixed farming pasture-crop rotation systems in southern Australia have traditionally relied on subterranean clover and annual medics. Concern over the long-term persistence of these species was raised in the 1980‟s with the cessation of manufacture of suction harvesters required for seed production. Subsequently, their adaptation has been tested due to climate change. More frequent droughts, particularly the millennium drought (2002-2009), increased incidence of false breaks and dry spring conditions causing decline or complete loss of seedbank reserves and failure of new sowings. A concerted effort developing new legume species for Australian farming systems, led by Western Australia, resulted in domestication of biserrula, bladder clover and gland clover and development of new cultivars of French and yellow serradella. These species/varieties possess characteristics including one or more of the following: higher hard seed content, deeper root systems, greater acid soil tolerance in symbiosis, increased herbage and seed production, wider tolerance to pest and diseases. They can also be harvested with conventional cereal harvesters reducing seed cost and enabling farmers to produce their own seed (Loi et al., 2005). A survey of farmers showed adoption of new species was limited by a lack of detailed management information on how to grow and manage them, to maximise their impact on crop and livestock productivity (Hackney et al., 2012). This paper reports on efforts made over a decade by a multidisciplinary WA and NSW team of plant breeders, rhizobiologists, agronomists and animal scientists, formed to develop new self-sustaining pasture-crop rotation systems to fill the void left by the failure of traditional rotation systems. The critical role and early recruitment of „champion‟ farmers in achieving the successful adoption of new technology is discussed, as is the difficulty in organizing and funding systems research

Electrochemical synthesis of carbon-metal fluoride nanocomposites as cathode materials for lithium batteries

Herein we have demonstrated an electrochemical method for the synthesis of carbon-metal fluoride nanocomposites (CMNFCs). Electrochemical intercalation of transition metal ions into graphite fluoride (CFx) resulted in the formation of CMNFCs. As a proof-of-concept, we have synthesized C-FeF2 and C-NiF2 nanocomposites by the electrochemical intercalation of Fe2+ and Ni2+ into CFx from corresponding non-aqueous electrolytes. The C-FeF2 and C-NiF2 nanocomposites synthesized by this method showed high reversible capacity and cycling stability compared to chemically synthesized analogs as cathode materials for lithium batteries. The reversible capacity of chemically synthesized C-FeF2 is 181 mAh g-1, whereas electrochemically synthesized material is 349 mAh g-1 after 20 cycles. The better cycling performance of electrochemically synthesized C-FeF2 was attributed to the homogeneous distribution of FeF2 nanoparticles within the carbon matrix enabled by the electrochemical intercalation of Fe2+. The electrochemical method described here is emission-free, cost-effective, occurs at room temperature, and extendable to the synthesis of several other CMFNCs. Moreover, it might provide new avenues for the synthesis of advanced functional materials
