    Honeywell's Compact, Wide-angle Uv-visible Imaging Sensor

    Get PDF
Honeywell is currently developing the Earth Reference Attitude Determination System (ERADS). ERADS determines attitude by imaging the entire Earth's limb and a ring of the adjacent star field in the 2800-3000 A band of the ultraviolet. This is achieved through the use of a highly nonconventional optical system, an intensifier tube, and a mega-element CCD array. The optics image a 30 degree region in the center of the field, and an outer region typically from 128 to 148 degrees, which can be adjusted up to 180 degrees. Because of the design employed, the illumination at the outer edge of the field is only some 15 percent below that at the center, in contrast to the drastic rolloffs encountered in conventional wide-angle sensors. The outer diameter of the sensor is only 3 in; the volume and weight of the entire system, including processor, are 1000 cc and 6 kg, respectively

    Internal Direct Products of Groupoids

    Get PDF
AbstractWhen generalizing the internal direct product from groups to all groupoids (binary systems), it has been customary to imitate the group case by making restrictions, especially the existence of an identity element. This article develops what seems a natural basic definition of internal direct product, then uses it as a background against which to compare more popular restricted versions

    Game Theory Behind Shop Competition

    Get PDF
This paper covers game theory at a basic level and looks at an elementary application of game theory, the prisoner’s dilemma, in two different ways. The paper goes on to use the example of competitive pizza shops and how game theory can help to make the best business decisions when it comes to whether to advertise or not and how to price slices of pizza. This is an interesting topic that is quite new in the mathematical world. Since John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern invented the idea in 1944, there has been a lot of progression in this field with lots of applications. With John Nash being one of the most well-known game theorists to date. John Nash found ‘the Nash equilibrium’ which is mentioned within this paper.

Home Advantage in Popular Team Sports

    Get PDF
This paper investigates whether there is a clear advantage associated with being the home team in the four sports, football, rugby union, T20 cricket and basketball. Data is compiled to back up this idea with a reasoning section which gives some background and possible reasons for the advantage. The outcome of this paper is that there seems to be a clear correlation between the number of wins and the team playing at home

High trait-anxious athletes\u27 perceptions of competitive stress in sport : a phenomenological study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of competitive stress of six Division I Southeastern Conference collegiate female athletes identified as high traitanxious. To obtain an accurate description of these experiences a qualitative phenomenological interview approach was used. One interview was conducted with each athlete and lasted between 20-30 minutes. Qualitative analysis of the transcribed responses revealed five major themes. These themes were (1) Sport Specific Types ofStress (2) Sources of Stress (3) Symptoms of Stress (4) Experience with Stress, and (5)Coping Strategies. These athletes experienced two types of sport-specific stress during their athletic event: continuous and situational. Participants also described their sources of stress. Sub-themes for sources of stress were external stress and internal stress. The Internal stress stemmed from a fear of failure, a feeling of a lack of control, and an overwhelming feeling. Once these athletes were aware of their source(s) of stress they began to describe the symptoms of stress. Sub-themes in this category included cognitive anxiety and somatic anxiety. After the athletes described the symptoms they then described their experience of the stress. Sub-themes include positive experiences and negative experiences. The coping strategies these athletes used to deal with stress include mental rehearsal and relaxation techniques. Taken together, the results, suggest a range of responses of these high trait-anxious athletes to competitive stress. Implications of these results for sport practitioners and sport psychology researchers were discussed

The Effectiveness of Oral Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories versus Steroid Injections in Patients with Shoulder Pain

    - The fact that shoulder pain is the most common musculoskeletal complaint in primary care shows that clinicians must have an arsenal of quality interventions to treat this problem. - The need for quality research and evidenced based guidelines are necessary to educate clinicians on their treatment options, the efficacy of those treatments, and their safety profiles.https://commons.und.edu/pas-grad-posters/1019/thumbnail.jp

Housing Affordability in New Zealand – Evaluation of the issue and a package of reform

    Get PDF
Housing affordability is a major problem in New Zealand and it has escalated following unprecedented increases in residential property values over the last five years. The issue is extremely complex with a wide assortment of variables that have an influence. This paper has focused on New Zealand’s property taxation policies The tax structure in New Zealand is inappropriate as it relies heavily on taxing the productive sectors of the economy. A major hole in the tax base exists concerning the taxation of capital, particularly around property where subjective legislation and susceptible exemptions almost encourage speculation. This paper has reviewed the impact of foreign investment, a land transfer duty instrument and the bright line test on housing affordability. It is recommended that data collected on foreign investment is revised to deem non-permanent New Zealand residents as foreign buyers. It is also recommended that foreign buyers are restricted from buying existing residential property stock. The low-rate and broad based land transfer duty scheme described in this report should be implemented to correct distortionary investment choices while simultaneously generating significant revenue. The revenue should be used to significantly reduce income taxes, creating a tax switch. The main home exemption should be removed from the bright line test to create more equitable outcomes and improve the tests effectiveness. It is hoped this reform package would steer people away from the pursuit of tax-free capital gains from residential property and encourage investment in productive sectors of the economy that actually stimulate economic growth

The Effectiveness of Oral Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories versus Steroid Injections in Patients with Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal complaint in primary care. Therefore, it is important that we have quality evidenced based treatments to guide clinicians in treating shoulder pain. I examined in this review whether corticosteroid injection into the glenohumeral joint or oral NSAIDs was more effective in reducing shoulder pain as well as the side effects associated with each treatment modality. Search methods included the PubMed and Cochrane databases. Only studies comparing corticosteroid injection and oral NSAIDs were included and not each treatment individually. In conclusion, corticosteroid injections into the glenohumeral joint accelerate pain relief but have equal efficacy on long term follow up. Both corticosteroid injections and oral NSAIDs are superior to placebo but one is not superior to the other. Corticosteroid injections were associated with some local side effects with systemic side effects being rare. Oral NSAIDs do have an effect on the gastrointestinal system, kidneys, and cardiovascular system thus they are not recommended for certain patient populations. This study provides a good framework to guide clinicians in the treatment of shoulder pain but further studies need to be done to include a formal physical therapy program and the effect of these treatments on specific shoulder conditions

The Accuracy of Wrist-worn Heart Rate Monitors across a Range of Exercise Intensities

    Get PDF
Commercially available wrist-worn heart rate (HR) monitors have become increasingly popular. However, the accuracy of the devices across a range of exercise intensities is largely unknown. This study investigated the accuracy of four wrist-worn HR monitors (Apple Watch Series 1, Fitbit Charge, TomTom Touch, and Mio Fuse). Eighteen adults completed three trials on a cycle ergometer wearing a chest-worn HR monitor (Polar). Trial 1 established the HR-power output relationship, and resting and maximum HR. In trials 2 and 3, participants were fitted to an electrocardiogram (ECG) and completed a step test consisting of 5 x 3 minute stages at 40 - 80% of HR reserve (determined in trial 1) whilst wearing two wrist-worn HR monitors. Relative to ECG, there were no differences in HR between the devices during exercise (p = 0.239), and no device × exercise intensity interaction (p = 0.370). There were no instances where ECG and Polar data differed by ≥ 5 b·min-1. Conversely, there were two instances (2.2%) with the Apple, four (4.4%) with the Mio, 10 (11.1%) with the TomTom, and 19 (21.1%) with the Fitbit. A chest-worn HR monitor offers greater accuracy compared to wrist-worn devices
