Position and interpretation of adjuncts: process, event and wieder 'again'

This paper deals with restitutive and repetitive wieder. Proceeding from the assumption that adverbial adjuncts have base positions which reflect their semantic relations to the rest of the sentence, it is shown that repetitive wieder belongs to the class of event adverbs minimally c-commanding the base positions of all arguments whereas restitutive wieder has many properties in common with process adjuncts, minimally c-commanding the final verb

Process, eventuality and wieder/again

This paper argues for a scopal explanation of the readings of the adverb wieder (‘again’). It is the syntactic entity that wieder is related to which determines whether the repetitive or the restitutive reading obtains. If it is adjoined to the minimal verbal domain, it relates to a situation-internal state thus producing a restitutive interpretation, if adjoined to a higher verbal projection, it relates to an eventuality resulting in a repetitive interpretation. Proceeding from the assumption that adverbial adjuncts have base positions which reflect their semantic relations to the rest of the sentence, repetitive wieder is shown to belong to the class of eventuality adverbs that minimally c-command the base positions of all arguments, whereas restitutive wieder has many properties in common with process (manner) adjuncts that minimally c-command the verb in clause-final base position

Gaming the heart of darkness

The history of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness has been one of adaptation and change. The enduring story is based upon Conrad’s experiences in the Congo in the 1890s and has been published as a novella in 1902. Since then the story has been criticised for racism by Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe (1975) and relocated to Vietnam by Francis Ford Coppola as Apocalypse Now (1979), influencing computer games such as Far Cry 2 (2008) and Spec Ops: The Line (2012). In examining the adaptations of Heart of Darkness we can consider how the story evolves from the passive reading of post-colonial narratives through to the active participation in morally ambiguous decisions and virtual war crimes through digital games: examining Conrad’s story as it has been adapted for other mediums provides a unique lens in which to view storytelling and retelling within the context of how we interpret the world. This paper compares the source material to its adaptations, considering the blending of historical fact and original fiction, the distortion of the original story for the purpose of creating new meaning, and reflects on whether interactivity impacts upon the feeling of immersion and sense of responsibility in audiences of different narratives

AcI-Konstruktionen und Valenz / Karin Bausewein

Hier sollen verschiedene Möglichkeiten, die Valenz von AcI-Verben zu analysieren, diskutiert werden. Dabei werden nicht nur Ansätze berücksichtigt, die sich explizit auf den Valenzbegriff beziehen, sondern auch neuere Vorschläge im Rahmen der generativen Syntax zur Analyse der AcI-Konstruktionen. Es handelt sich im wesentlichen um drei verschiedene Analysemöglichkeiten, die auf ihre empirische Adäquatheit und die theoretischen Probleme, die sie aufwerfen, untersucht werden. Als adäquateste Lösung wird sich eine Analyse von AcIVerb und infinitem Verb als Verbalkomplex erweisen, wobei für die Wahrnehmungsverben, kausatives und nicht-kausatives lassen ein unterschiedlicher Grad an Auxiliarisierung vorliegt

Adverbiale stellen ein Problem fü r die Beschreibung der Valenz bzw. der Argumentstruktur von Verben dar, da sie sowohl als Ergänzungen (Argumente) wie auch als freie Angaben (Adjunkte) auftreten können.
