    Geometry of Keplerian disk systems and bounds on masses of their components

    We investigate accreting disk systems with polytropic gas in Keplerian motion. Numerical data and partial analytic results show that the self-gravitation of the disk speeds up its rotation -- its rotational frequency is larger than that given by the well known strictly Keplerian formula that takes into account the central mass only. Thus determination of central mass in systems with massive disks requires great care -- the strictly Keplerian formula yields only an upper bound. The effect of self-gravity depends on geometric aspects of disk configurations. Disk systems with a small (circa 10410^{-4}) ratio of the innermost radius to the outermost disk radius have the central mass close to the upper limit, but if this ratio is of the order of unity then the central mass can be smaller by many orders of magnitude from this bound.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure

    Child support enforcement for teenage fathers: Problems and prospects

    The NLSY data indicate that about 7.3 percent of teenage males become fathers and that very few of these fathers live with their children. Father absence and the concurrent increase in female-headed households are closely associated with the impoverishment of children. Most absent teen fathers never come into contact with the child support enforcement program, and the extent to which they financially support their children informally is not well understood. While the income of absent teen fathers is low in the teen years, it increases over time, as does the potential for collecting child support. Nevertheless, men who were absent teen fathers earn less in early adulthood than men who deferred parenting until age twenty or later and teen fathers who lived with their children. Early establishment of paternity and greater standardization in the treatment of adolescent fathers by the child support enforcement program are recommended. Further, the substantial and persistent income deficit experienced by adolescent fathers who live apart from their children raises an interesting dilemma. While children may benefit financially and psychosocially from living with two parents, the lower income of men who were absent teenage fathers may make them poor marital prospects. This raises doubts about the recent recommendations of some scholars that we should bring back the shotgun wedding.

    In an effort to standardize the calculation of monthly child support awards, the federal government requires states to use preestablished formulas to determine the amount of awards. However, because of human error, differences in the experience and training of the officials making the calculations, and the extent to which computers are used to calculate the awards, the formulas do not always yield the same result. In fact, the discrepancy between the amount calculated by an individual child support official and the approved amount as calculated by the state in which that official works can be quite large, on the order of several hundred dollars. Adopting simpler formulas will reduce errors; this should be a priority even if child support officials use computers to calculate award amounts (computers can reduce errors but will not eliminate them, particularly in the case of complex formulas). Efforts to further the training and education of personnel who calculate awards would also help, and child support offices should revise their formulas to cover high-income cases.

    The statistical properties of spread F observed at Hainan station during the declining period of the 23rd solar cycle

    The temporal variations of the low latitude nighttime spread F (SF) observed by DPS-4 digisonde at low latitude Hainan station (geog. 19.5° N, 109.1° E, dip lat. 9.5° N) during the declining solar cycle 23 from March 2002 to February 2008 are studied. The spread F measured by the digisonde were classified into four types, i.e., frequency SF (FSF), range SF (RSF), mixed SF (MSF), and strong range SF (SSF). The statistical results show that MSF and SSF are the outstanding irregularities in Hainan, MSF mainly occurs during summer and low solar activity years, whereas SSF mainly occurs during equinoxes and high solar activity years. The SSF has a diurnal peak before midnight and usually appears during 20:00–02:00 LT, whereas MSF peaks nearly or after midnight and occurs during 22:00–06:00 LT. The time of maximum occurrence of SSF is later in summer than in equinoxes and this time delay can be caused by the later reversal time of the <I><B>E</B></I>&times;<I><B>B</B></I> drift in summer. The SunSpot Number (SSN) dependence of each type SF is different during different season. The FSF is independent of SSN during each season; RSF with SSN is positive relation during equinoxes and summer and is no relationship during the winter; MSF is significant dependence on SSN during the summer and winter, and does not relate to SSN during the equinoxes; SSF is clearly increasing with SSN during equinoxes and summer, while it is independent of SSN during the winter. The occurrence numbers of each type SF and total SF have the same trend, i.e., increasing as Kp increases from 0 to 1, and then decreasing as increasing Kp. The correlation with Kp is negative for RSF, MSF, SSF and total SF, but is vague for the FSF

    The separated electric and magnetic field responses of luminescent bacteria exposed to pulsed microwave irradiation

    Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are ubiquitous in the digital world we inhabit, with microwave and millimetre wave sources of non-ionizing radiation employed extensively in electronics and communications, e.g., in mobile phones and Wi-Fi. Indeed, the advent of 5G systems and the “internet of things” is likely to lead to massive densification of wireless networks. Whilst the thermal effects of EMFs on biological systems are well characterised, their putative non-thermal effects remain a controversial subject. Here, we use the bioluminescent marine bacterium, Vibrio fischeri, to monitor the effects of pulsed microwave electromagnetic fields, of nominal frequency 2.5 GHz, on light emission. Separated electric and magnetic field effects were investigated using a resonant microwave cavity, within which the maxima of each field are separated. For pulsed electric field exposure, the bacteria gave reproducible responses and recovery in light emission. At the lowest pulsed duty cycle (1.25%) and after short durations (100 ms) of exposure to the electric field at power levels of 4.5 W rms, we observed an initial stimulation of bioluminescence, whereas successive microwave pulses became inhibitory. Much of this behaviour is due to thermal effects, as the bacterial light output is very sensitive to the local temperature. Conversely, magnetic field exposure gave no measurable short-term responses even at the highest power levels of 32 W rms. Thus, we were able to detect, de-convolute, and evaluate independently the effects of separated electric and magnetic fields on exposure of a luminescent biological system to microwave irradiation

    Enhanced Synthesis of the Exopolysaccharide Ethapolan by Acinetobacter sp. 12S Grown on a Mixture of Substrates

    Earlier, we found that the synthesis of the microbial exopolysaccharide (EPS) ethapolan by Acinetobacter sp. 12S can be enhanced by growing this bacterium on a mixture of ethanol and glucose It should be noted that the cultivation of Acinetobacter sp. 12S on the substrate mixture was accompanied by the enhancement of the synthesis of not only the EPS but also the biomass. The aim of this work was to maximize the transformation of the substrate carbon into EPS. Among the factors studied that may influence the transformation efficiency were the effect of the inoculum, the concentration of carbon and nitrogen sources in the medium, the nature of the energy-deficient substrate, and the availability of sodium ions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Strains. The two bacterial strains used in this work were Acinetobacter sp. 12S (the ethapolan producer described earlier Cultivation conditions. The strains were grown in a liquid mineral medium Cells for inoculation were grown on nutrient agar for 2 days or in mineral K + medium with (a) 0.5 vol % ethanol, (b) 0.5 wt % glucose, or (c) 0.5 vol % ethanol + 0.5 wt % glucose for 16-24 h (i.e., to the exponential growth phase). The inoculum was grown at the Abstract -Enhanced synthesis of the exopolysaccharide ethapolan by Acinetobacter sp. 12S was observed when the bacterium was grown on a mixture of two energetically nonequivalent substrates (ethanol and glucose) taken in a molar proportion of 3.1 : 1. The efficiency of carbon transformation into EPSs was maximum when sodium ions were absent in the medium, the concentration of nitrogen source was reduced to 0.3-0.45 g/l, and the inoculum was grown on ethanol. Such conditions provided an increase in the maximum specific growth rate and its attainment in earlier cultivation terms. Molasses as a substitution for glucose was inefficient. The activities of the key enzymes of C 2 metabolism in Acinetobacter sp. 12S cells grown on the substrate mixture were 1.1 to 1.7 times lower than they were during growth on ethanol alone. The activity of isocitrate lyase in cells grown on the substrate mixture declined to an even greater extent (by 4-7 times), indicating that the role of the glyoxylate cycle in such cells is insignificant.     Bioluminescence of Vibrio fischeri: bacteria respond quickly and sensitively to pulsed microwave electric (but not magnetic) fields

    Biological systems with intrinsic luminescent properties serve as powerful and noninvasive bioreporters for real-time and label-free monitoring of cell physiology. This study employs the bioluminescent marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri to investigate the effects of separated microwave electric (E) and magnetic (H) fields. Using a cylindrical TM010 mode aluminum resonant cavity, designed to spatially separate E and H fields of a pulsed microwave (2.45 GHz) input, we sampled at 100-ms intervals the 490-nm emission of bioluminescence from suspensions of the V. fischeri. E-field exposure (at 4.24 and 13.4 kV/m) results in rapid and sensitive responses to 100-ms pulses. H-field excitation elicits no measurable responses, even at 100-fold higher power input levels (equivalent to 183 A/m). The observed effects on bacterial light output partially correlate with measured E-field-induced temperature increases. In conclusion, the endogenous bioluminescence of V. fischeri provides a sensitive and noninvasive method to assess the biological effects of microwave fields

    Coexisting high-grade glandular and squamous cervical lesions and human papillomavirus infections

    Contains fulltext : 144469.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)The frequency of high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) genotypes in patients with adenocarcinoma in situ (ACIS) with coexisting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), ACIS without coexisting CIN, and high-grade CIN (CIN II/III) was studied, in order to gain more insight into the relation between hr-HPV infections and the development of coexisting squamous and glandular lesions. The SPF(10) LiPA PCR was used to detect simultaneously 25 different HPV genotypes in biopsies obtained from 90 patients with CIN II/III, 47 patients with ACIS without coexisting CIN, and 49 patients with ACIS and coexisting CIN. hr-HPV was detected in 84 patients (93%) with CIN II/III, 38 patients (81%) with ACIS without CIN, and in 47 patients (96%) with ACIS and coexisting CIN. A total of 13 different hr-HPV genotypes were detected in patients with CIN II/III, and only five in patients with ACIS with/without coexisting CIN. HPV 31, multiple hr-HPV genotypes, and HPV genotypes other than 16, 18, and 45 were significantly more often detected in patients with CIN II/III, while HPV 18 was significantly more often detected in patients with ACIS with/without CIN. There were no significant differences in the frequency of specific hr-HPV genotypes between patients with ACIS with or without coexisting CIN. In conclusion, the frequency of specific hr-HPV genotypes is similar for patients with ACIS without CIN and patients with ACIS and coexisting CIN, but is significantly different for patients with CIN II/III without ACIS. These findings suggest that squamous lesions, coexisting with high-grade glandular lesions, are aetiologically different from squamous lesions without coexisting glandular lesions
