Zoom-in-Net: Deep Mining Lesions for Diabetic Retinopathy Detection

We propose a convolution neural network based algorithm for simultaneously diagnosing diabetic retinopathy and highlighting suspicious regions. Our contributions are two folds: 1) a network termed Zoom-in-Net which mimics the zoom-in process of a clinician to examine the retinal images. Trained with only image-level supervisions, Zoomin-Net can generate attention maps which highlight suspicious regions, and predicts the disease level accurately based on both the whole image and its high resolution suspicious patches. 2) Only four bounding boxes generated from the automatically learned attention maps are enough to cover 80% of the lesions labeled by an experienced ophthalmologist, which shows good localization ability of the attention maps. By clustering features at high response locations on the attention maps, we discover meaningful clusters which contain potential lesions in diabetic retinopathy. Experiments show that our algorithm outperform the state-of-the-art methods on two datasets, EyePACS and Messidor.Comment: accepted by MICCAI 201

No hubieron infecciones. The author s carried out an analysis of healing in shaft fractures of radius treated by compression bone plating (Bagby System). 30 patients treated in the Department of Orthopaedi c Surgery of "Hospital das Clínicas" (F.M.U.S.P.) betwee n 1975 and 1985 wer e includedin this study. 24 (80%) of patients wer e men and 6 (20%) women; average of age was 30.1 year s (rangel8-47). Background: Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) proposes a model for conceptualizing personality disorders in which they are characterized by impairments in personality functioning and maladaptive personality traits. The Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) is a self-report measure that assesses the presence and severity of these maladaptive personality traits. Objective: The current study examined the reliability and validity of the Arabic version of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) to measure maladaptive personality traits in the Emirati population of the United Arab Emirates. Methods: The Arabic version of the PID-5 was administered to a community sample of 1,090 United Arab Emirates nationals (89.5% female and 10.5% male, mean age = 22.44 years old). The descriptive measures, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent validity with NEO – Five Factor Inventory, as well as PID-5’s factor structure, were all addressed. Results: The PID-5facets and domains mean scores were higher in the Emirati sample compared to the original US sample. Internal consistency of the PID-5 scales was acceptable to high and test-retest coefficients ranged from 0.84 (facets) to 0.87 (domains). As expected, the five domains of the Arabic version of the PID-5 correlated significantly with all Five-Factor Model domains of personality. Additionally, the Arabic version of the PID-5 confirmed a five-factor structure that resembles the PID-5 domains. Conclusion: The findings of this study provided initial support for the use of the Arabic version of the PID-5 to assess maladaptive personality traits in the Emirati population of the United Arab Emirates.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

New synthetic raloxifen-like di(hetero)arylamines induce apoptosis and inhibit the estrogen receptor in breast cancer cells

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the western world, and in spite of some decline in death rates in recent years it is still the second most common cause of death from cancer, in women (1). For more than three decades, the estrogen receptor (ER) has been the most important biomarker of breast cancer, largely due to the substantial benefit that endocrine therapy provides in the treatment of ER positive tumors, in women of all ages (2). Endocrine therapies currently available include selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), like tamoxifen and raloxifene (3). Raloxifene acts as an estrogen antagonist in the breast by competitive binding to the ER, inhibiting estrogen-induced breast tissue proliferation and preventing the growth of mammary tumors. In addition, it shows no increase in incidence of endometrial cancer, which is an advantage compared to tamoxifen (4). The successes of these endocrine therapies, however, are often limited. So, it is important to continue searching for new strategies and/or drugs that overcome resistance problems and that can be potent enough with fewer adverse effects. In this work, we studied the effect of two new synthetic di(hetero)arylamines, named MJQ2 and MJQ3 (which have in common with raloxifene a benzothiophene ring), in cell proliferation and apoptosis of two different cell lines from breast cancer: MCF-7 (ER positive) and MDA-MB-231 (ER negative). Our results showed that both diarylamines induce apoptosis without significant necrosis (evaluated by Hoechst-PI staining), at the IC50 concentration that inhibits cell proliferation (evaluated by the SRB assay). The results obtained with TMRM, a marker of mitochondrial membrane potential, suggest that mitochondrial disruption can be involved in this apoptotic process. These effects are more pronounced in the MCF-7 cell line (ER positive), suggesting that the presence of the ER might be important in the response to these compounds. Confirmation of their interaction with the ER was obtained in the E-Screen assay, where a clear antagonism of the proliferative effects of the hormone 17β-estradiol was observed with both compounds, at non-toxic concentrations. The overall results suggest that these new synthetic “raloxifene-like” drugs might have potential to be further developed as alternative hormonal or adjuvant therapies for breast cancer.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) research project PTDC/QUI/68382/2006 (FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER 007441)
