    Spinwave damping in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic XY model

    The effect of damping of spinwaves in a two-dimensional classical ferromagnetic XY model is considered. The damping rate Γq\Gamma_{q} is calculated using the leading diagrams due to the quartic-order deviations from the harmonic spin Hamiltonian. The resulting four-dimensional integrals are evaluated by extending the techniques developed by Gilat and others for spectral density types of integrals. Γq\Gamma_{q} is included into the memory function formalism due to Reiter and Solander, and Menezes, to determine the dynamic structure function S(q,ω)S(q,\omega). For the infinite sized system, the memory function approach is found to give non-divergent spinwave peaks, and a smooth nonzero background intensity (``plateau'' or distributed intensity) for the whole range of frequencies below the spinwave peak. The background amplitude relative to the spinwave peak rises with temperature, and eventually becomes higher than the spinwave peak, where it appears as a central peak. For finite-sized systems, there are multiple sequences of weak peaks on both sides of the spinwave peaks whose number and positions depend on the system size and wavevector in integer units of 2π/L2\pi/L. These dynamical finite size effects are explained in the memory function analysis as due to either spinwave difference processes below the spinwave peak or sum processes above the spinwave peak.     Universality of weakly bound dimers and Efimov trimers close to Li-Cs Feshbach resonances

    We study the interspecies scattering properties of ultracold Li-Cs mixtures in their two energetically lowest spin channels in the magnetic field range between 800 G and 1000 G. Close to two broad Feshbach resonances we create weakly bound LiCs dimers by radio-frequency association and measure the dependence of the binding energy on the external magnetic field strength. Based on the binding energies and complementary atom loss spectroscopy of three other Li-Cs s-wave Feshbach resonances we construct precise molecular singlet and triplet electronic ground state potentials using a coupled-channels calculation. We extract the Li-Cs interspecies scattering length as a function of the external field and obtain almost a ten-fold improvement in the precision of the values for the pole positions and widths of the s-wave Li-Cs Feshbach resonances as compared to our previous work [Pires \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{112}, 250404 (2014)]. We discuss implications on the Efimov scenario and the universal geometric scaling for LiCsCs trimers

    Five-Dimensional QED, Muon Pair Production and Correction to the Coulomb Potential

    We consider QED in five dimensions in a configuration where matter is localized on a 3-brane while foton propagates in the bulk. The idea is to investigate the effects of the Kaluza-Klein modes of the photon in the relativistic regime, but in low energy, and in the nonrelativistic regime. In the relativistic regime, we calculate the cross section for the reaction e++eμ++μe^+ + e^- \to \mu^+ + \mu^-. We compare our theoretical result with a precise measurement of this cross section at s=57.77\sqrt{s}=57.77 GeV. As result, we extract a lower bound on the size of the extra dimension. In the nonrelativistic regime, we derive the contribution for the Coulomb potential due to the whole tower of the Kaluza-Klein excited modes of the photon. We use the modified potential to calculate the Rutherford scattering differential cross section.Comment: minor changes, three new refs. added, to appear in IJMP

    Universal three-body recombination and Efimov resonances in an ultracold Li-Cs mixture

    We study Efimov resonances via three-body loss in an ultracold two-component gas of fermionic 6^6Li and bosonic 133^{133}Cs atoms close to a Feshbach resonance at 843~G, extending results reported previously [Pires \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 250404 (2014)] to temperatures around 120~nK. The experimental scheme for reaching lower temperatures is based upon compensating the gravity-induced spatial separation of the mass-imbalanced gases with bichromatic optical dipole traps. We observe the first and second excited Li-Cs-Cs Efimov resonance in the magnetic field dependence of the three-body event rate constant, in good agreement with the universal zero-range theory at finite temperature [Petrov and Werner, Phys. Rev. A 92, 022704 (2015)]. Deviations are found for the Efimov ground state, and the inelasticity parameter η\eta is found to be significantly larger than those for single-species systems

    GRASS UTILIZATION IN GROWING FINISHING BÍSARO PIGS (85-107 KG). PERFORMANCE AND CARCASS COMPOSITION

    The use of different quantities of vegetables, forages or fresh grass as fodder for growing-finishing pigs is an important factor of the northern Portugal traditional system. The increasing development of swine production in outdoor systems, extensive and organic production, turns to upcoming natural diets, in which grass performs a significant part. With regard to this, some investigation has been made concerning the use of fibre-rich feed ingredients in pig nutrition. Metabolic effects of its ingestion are analysed concerning different sights (economical, social, environmental and physiological ones). The aim of this work was to study the effects of grass utilization in the diets on performances of finishing Bísaro pigs. A total of 22 pigs (16 castrated males and 6 females) was housed outdoor and fed ad libitum (37 – 85 kg live weight) with a growing diet and then transferred to an indoor system (with free access to an outdoor area) for 49 days, according to 3 different treatments: 100% concentrate (C), 75% concentrate + ad libitum grass (CE75), 50% concentrate + ad libitum grass (CE50). The grass was supplied and its intake registered on a daily basis. Every 14 days, the pigs were weighted and their back fat (P2 in vivo) measured. After slaughter (average weight of 107 kg LW), yield and ½ left carcass characteristics were controlled. During the outdoor growing phase, the ADG was 513 g/day. During the indoor finishing phase, the increase grass intake was proportional to the reduction of concentrate in the diet. The ADG (g) and the fat deposition (P2 cm) were significantly different (P<0,05) in the 3 treatments (ADG: C=641, CE75=467, CE50=356 and: C=11,4, CE75=+9,5, CE50=+6,2). The empty body weight (kg) was also proportional to the intake of concentrate (C=116,2; CE75=107,7; CE50=102,2). Comparatively to the weight of the body parts, pigs that had higher intake of grass and lower of concentrate showed a higher % of shoulder (P<0,05; C=20,4, CE75=21,7, CE50=22,2) and the pH45min of CE carcasses was significantly higher (P<0,05). As a conclusion, concentrate substitution for grass showed a slower growing rate, thinner carcasses and a high technological quality. Neverthelles variability (CV %) of the productive parameters at the end of this study were higher in the treatments that included grass: live weight (C= 10,5%; C75=10,7%; C50=14,3%), finishing ADG (C=24%; C75=37%, C50=42%), and final fat (C=37%; C75=32%, C50=52%). These values suggest that the utilization of fibrous feeds in growing-finishing swine may be one of the possible explanations of the more heterogeneous products and carcasses found in the traditional or extensive systems, common users of fibrous feeds in the carcass finishing phase

    On the benefits of speech and touch interaction with communication services for mobility impaired users

    Although technology for communication has evolved tremendously over the past decades, mobility impaired individuals still face many difficulties interacting with communication services, either due to HCI issues or intrinsic design problems with the services. In this paper we present the results of a usability study, conducted with a group of five mobility impaired users, comprising paraplegic and quadriplegic individuals. The study participants carried out a set of tasks with a multimodal (speech, touch, gesture, keyboard and mouse) and multiplatform (mobile, desktop) prototype, offering an integrated access to communication and entertainment services, such as email, agenda, conferencing and social media. The prototype was designed to take into account the requirements captured from these users, with the objective of evaluating if the use of multimodal interfaces for communication and social media services, could improve the interaction with such services. Our study revealed that a multimodal prototype system, offering natural interaction modalities, especially supporting speech and touch, can in fact improve access to the presented services, contributing to a better social inclusion of mobility impaired individuals.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Avaliação da carbonização do ouriço da castanha-do-brasil em forno tipo tambor.

    O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a produção de carvão a partir do ouriço da castanha-do-Brasil utilizando-se tambores metálicos como reator, adaptáveis à característica de mobilidade, típica desta exploração. O tempo médio de carbonização foi relativamente curto, 4:45 horas, o que gerou um rendimento em carvão de 19,11%. O teor de material com carbonização incompleta foi de 35,77%. Sua densidade básica foi de 0,631 g.cm-3, já a densidade a granel foi de 0,231g.cm-3. O teor de umidade médio do carvão produzido foi de 4,71%. Materiais voláteis, totalizaram 20,79% da massa total. O teor de cinzas foi de 0,87% e, o carbono fixo foi de 78,33%. O poder calorífico do ouriço pirolisado fo de 7.252,98 kCal.kg-1. Dessa forma, pode-se concluir que o método do tambor é adaptado à produção de carvão a partir do ouriço da castanha-do-Brasil, porém, melhorias no isolamento térmico do reator podem ser propostas para trabalhos futuros; o rendimento gravimétrico em carvão foi baixo, quando comparado ao rendimento por outros métodos de carbonização, provavelmente, em virtude da falta de isolamento térmico; o tempo de carbonização no reator foi consideravelmente menor que os obtidos para a carbonização em mufla de laboratório de produtos similares; o carvão produzido pelo método do tambor obteve características químicas, físicas e térmicas comparáveis ao carvão de outras espécies madeireiras e não-madeireiras
