Modeling of Path Loss for RadioWave Propagation in Wireless Sensor Networks in Cassava Crops Using Machine Learning

    Get PDF
Modeling radio signal propagation remains one of the most critical tasks in the planning of wireless communication systems, including wireless sensor networks (WSN). Despite the existence of a considerable number of propagation models, the studies aimed at characterizing the attenuation in the wireless channel are still numerous and relevant. These studies are used in the design and planning of wireless networks deployed in various environments, including those with abundant vegetation. This paper analyzes the performance of three vegetation propagation models, ITU-R, FITU-R, and COST-235, and compares them with path loss measurements conducted in a cassava field in Sincelejo, Colombia. Additionally, we applied four machine learning techniques: linear regression (LR), k-nearest neighbors (K-NN), support vector machine (SVM), and random forest (RF), aiming to enhance prediction accuracy levels. The results show that vegetation models based on traditional approaches are not able to adequately characterize attenuation, while models obtained by machine learning using RF, K-NN, and SVM can predict path loss in cassava with RMSE and MAE values below 5 dB

Ontology support for translating negotiation primitives

    Get PDF
In this paper we present an ontology solution to solve the problem of language heterogeneity among negotiating agents during the exchange of messages over Internet. Traditional negotiation systems have been implemented using different syntax and semantics. Our proposal offers a novel solution incorporating an ontology, which serves as a shared vocabulary of negotiation messages; and a translation module that is executed on the occurrence of a misunderstanding. We implemented a service oriented architecture for executing negotiations and conducted experiments incorporating different negotiation messages. The results of the tests show that the proposed solution improves the interoperability between heterogeneous negotiation agents.IFIP International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Theory and Practice - Integration of AI with other TechnologiesRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Competitiveness of the Hotel Industry: A Knowledge Management Approach

    Get PDF
There is also an emerging research agenda on knowledge management within the hotel sector. Hotels are currently increasingly dependent on their competence to possess internal and external knowledge, making knowledge a critical resource for competitiveness and obtaining competitive advantages for innovation and differentiation of its competitors. Strategies tacit-oriented and explicit-oriented knowledge also has the dominant role in hospitality service operations. The principal goal of this study is to identify the role of knowledge management organizational processes as a determinant of competitiveness in the hotel industry, particularly how knowledge management strategies centered on the source (internal and external) and knowledge (tacit and explicit) have positive an impact on the competitiveness of hotels. We use a quantitative approach based in an email survey applied to 55 Portuguese hotels. Our results show that knowledge management strategies oriented to source and type of knowledge are critical for hotels competitiveness and obtaining competitive advantages.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Predictor Variables Of Academic Success In Mathematics Under A Binary Logistic Regression Model

    Get PDF
In recent years, many investigations have been carried out to identify the different factors that influence academic achievement in mathematics. Although the list is extensive and diverse, this paper focuses on determining whether the affective domain, mathematical processes and pedagogical practices influence academic achievement in mathematics. The research considers a quantitative approach at a cross-sectional descriptive level. The sample consisted of 2,450 students from a Colombian department from fourth to eleventh grade (ages 8 to 20 years). The instrument was composed of 90 items that evaluated the affective domain, mathematical processes, pedagogical practices and academic performance, with responses on a five-level Likert scale. The independent variables considered were affective domain, mathematical processes and pedagogical practices, and the dependent variable was academic performance. The adjustment obtained resulted in a binary logistic model, where the categories considered were pass or fail, which allowed 95% of those who passed to be correctly classified, although, at a global level, its effectiveness was close to l 87%. It should be noted that none of the aspects associated with teachers’ pedagogical competencies in their classroom work was significant in constructing the model.&nbsp

Mapping of processes for the integration of civil registry systems in São Tomé and Príncipe

    Get PDF
The Civil Register throughout the Vital Statistics provides key information for analysis and planning of multisector policies based on age and geographic distribution of populations. Based on computer systems and automated processes are an integral part of supporting the consolidation of these systems in developing countries in order to reach more acceptable levels of coverage (Notzon , 2014) (WBC & WHO, 2015) and that guarantee citizens the right to a legal identity and citizenship (Ayebale, 2015). This article presents the perspective followed in the implementation of a computer-based system for the Civil Registry and Vital Statistics in São Tomé and Príncipe, which that aims to simplify and streamline existing processes, reduce bureaucracy and improve the provision of services to citizens, contributing a new role and support the assumption that robust Civil Registry and Vital Statistics provide direct benefits to individuals and greater accountability of governments
