    Calibration and Lag of a Friez Type Cup Anemometer

    Tests on a Friez type cup anemometer have been made in the variable density wind tunnel of the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory to calibrate the instrument and to determine its suitability for velocity measurements of wind gusts. The instrument was calibrated against a Pitot-static tube placed directly above the anemometer at air densities corresponding to sea level, and to an altitude of approximately 6000 feet. Air-speed acceleration tests were made to determine the lag in the instrument reading. The calibration results indicate that there should be an altitude correction. It is concluded that the cup anemometer is too sluggish for velocity measurements of wind gusts

    Tests of N.A.C.A. airfoils in the variable-density wind tunnel Series 230.

    The results of tests of six airfoils having the N.A.C.A. 230 mean line and varying in thickness from 0.06c to 0.21c are presented. These results agree with previous findings in showing that aerodynamically the best section is one of moderate thickness. The data are of value mainly in connection with the design of tapered wings having sections based on the N.A.C.A. 230 mean line

    A Necessity For Social And Emotional Learning In Kindergarten The Teaching Of Self-Regulation Through Literacy

    The research question addressed in this capstone project was: How can kindergarten teachers begin the year using a text set to teach the social and emotional learning skill of self-regulation? This capstone project was identified through the author’s experience observing many kindergarten students struggling to positively interact with their peers due to ill-developed social and emotional skills. The Self-regulation Text Set Unit lesson plans designed for this capstone project incorporate the teaching of social and emotional learning skills through literacy instruction. This project developed a text set unit with 13 lesson plans and accompanying texts to be used by kindergarten teachers to support the development of the social and emotional learning skill of self-regulation. This text set unit is to be used at the beginning of the school year while a teacher teaches routines and expectations. This capstone project suggests that students’ self- regulation ability will strengthen through the use of the text set unit and additional instruction. The next step of creating the Empathy and Cooperation Text Set Units will continue to provide a strong foundation for social and emotional learning instruction in kindergarten

    Residential sorting across Auckland neighbourhoods

    This paper addresses the extent to which people in Auckland exhibit residential location patterns that differ between groups, i.e. the extent to which they are spatially sorted. To measure patterns of residential location, the paper uses the index of segregation, an isolation index, Gini coefficients, Ellison & Glaeser and Maurel & Sédillot concentration measures, Moran’s I and Getis and Ord’s G*. Results are presented based on a classification of the population in different ways: ethnicity, income, education, age and country of birth. Both city-wide and local measures are considered. We find that ethnic-based sorting is the strongest indicator of residential sorting patterns, but soring by income, education and age is also present. Sorting by income and qualifications is strongest at the top and, to lesser extent, at the bottom of the income and qualifications range. Age segregation is most pronounced for older residents. Clustering is strongest within a range of up to one kilometre and declines significantly over greater distances. Local analysis by means of Getis and Ord’s G* calculations suggest significant ethnic clustering. Apart from Maori and Pacific Islanders, ethnic groups tend to locate way from each other, as confirmed with cross-Moran’s I calculations. When considering interactions between ethnicity and income we find that the location of ethnicity income subgroups is more strongly related to neighbourhood income

    Effect of nose shape on the characteristics of symmetrical airfoils

    Tests of nine symmetrical airfoils, having different leading-edge radii, were made in the variable density wind tunnel. Three symmetrical NACA airfoils having maximum thickness-to-chord ratio of 0.06, 0.012, and 0.018 were used as basic (or normal) sections; and for each of these thicknesses one thinner and one blunter nose section were developed. Although the slope of the lift curve varies with thickness, these tests show that for any given thickness the slope is independent of nose radius

    Pressures were simultaneously measured at 54 orifices distributed over the midspan section of a 5 by 30-inch rectangular model of the NACA 4412 airfoil in the variable-density tunnel. These measurements were made at 17 angles of attack from -20 degrees to 30 degrees for eight values of the effective Reynolds number form approximately 100,000 to 8,200,000. Accurate data were thus obtained for studying the variation of pressure distribution with Reynolds number. These results on the NACA 4412 section indicated that the pressure distribution is practically unaffected by changes in Reynolds number except where separation is involved

    This report presents a theoretical analysis of the lift on a trailing edge flap. An analytical expression has been derived which enables the computation of the flap load coefficient. The theoretical results seem to show a fair agreement with the meager experimental results which are available
