    Variation with Time of the Current in an Ozonizer Contraction (Discharge) Under D. C. Excitation

    The count rate in Siemen ozonizer type tubes filled with dry air at Various low pressures, as measured by direct current impulse potential passing through it, has been found to decrease with the time during which the discharge is maintained reaching eventually a minimum value. It is concluded that this decrease is due to species formed during the discharge and adsorbed on the glass surface. It is also concluded that the ionization in the gaseous phase is small, and that the count rate Occurs by a sudden release of a cascade of electrons from the cathode, these electrons being responsible for decay formation through an air-atom mechanism

    Evaluation of volar locking plate fixation for management of intra-articular fractures of distal end of radius

    Background: With the increase in high velocity trauma, the incidence of intra-articular fractures of distal end of radius, particularly in adults- the working class of society is increasing. Normal functioning of wrist is of paramount importance for all activities of daily living and working. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the results of using volar locking plate for fixation of intra-articular fractures of distal end radius, with emphasis on return to pre-injury employment assessment.Methods: It is a combined prospective and retrospective study from January 2013 to June 2016. Twenty patients of intra-articular fractures of distal end of radius (AO type B2 and B3) were treated with volar locking plate through volar approach. The patients were regularly followed up for one year. The assessment of pain, range of motion, activity and grip strength were scored by Green and O’Brien’s system.Results: According to scoring system of Green and O’Brien the patients were assessed at 1 year follow up. 17 patients (85%) showed excellent results (scores 90-100). 2 patients (10%) showed good result (scores 80-89) while 1 patient (5%) had fair outcome (score 65-79). No patient had poor result (score less than 65). 19 patients (95%) returned to their pre-injury employment at 1 year.Conclusions: Open reduction and internal fixation with volar locking plate is reliable and excellent methods of management of intra-articular fracture of distal end of radius especially shear type of injury (AO type B2 and B3) in adults.

    Evaluating the Performance of Hybrid Capture 2 Test as a Primary Screening Test from Studies Conducted in Low and Middle-Income Country Settings-Special Focus India

    Among the screening tests for cervical cancer, advantages of screening with second generation molecular Hybrid Capture 2 (HC2) test is the high sensitivity and negative predictive value that makes it easy to implement as a cervical cancer screening policy necessitating less screening rounds. High income countries are now implementing HC2 test in their national cervical cancer screening program. Since the acceptance of any screening test depends on the sensitivity of the test, the current study was carried out to evaluate the sensitivity of HC2 test reported from Low- and Middle-income countries (LMIC) which share major burden of cervical cancer globally and to establish if HC2 test could be used as a primary screening test in India. Materials and methods: The population based cross sectional studies from LMICs which evaluated HC2 test as a primary screening modality to diagnose Cervical intraepithelial neoplasm grade 2 and above (CIN2+) lesions were included. Results: A total of 18 studies from LMIC involving 1,13,086 women were reviewed for sensitivity of HC2 as a primary screening test. The overall average sensitivity and specificity to diagnose CIN2+ lesions were 79.84% (95% CI-71.01,86.73) and 85.63% (95% CI- 84.37,86.92) respectively. India demonstrated an average sensitivity and specificity of 65% (95% CI 57,77) and 93% (95% CI- 92,94) respectively. Conclusion: Results from LMIC demonstrate a comparably low sensitivity of HC2 test to diagnose CIN2+ lesions as compared to that reported from High income countries. Sensitivity of HC2 was substantially low for India. The current study discusses issues of HC2 assay and the role of untreated Reproductive tract infections as probable causes for low sensitivity of the test. This needs further research in an attempt to improve the sensitivity of the test in an era of self-sampling and low-cost HPV test on horizon to improve the coverage for cervical cancer

    Toxicity Study of Heavy Metals Pollutants in Waste Water Effluent Samples Collected From Taloja Industrial Estate of Mumbai, India,

    Abstract The present research work deals with the assessment of pollution due to toxic heavy metals in the industrial waste water effluents collected from Taloja industrial belt of Mumbai. The study reveals that dyes, paints, pharmaceutical and textile industries are some of the major industries contributing to the heavy metal pollutants in the surrounding aquatic environment. It was observed that paint manufacturing industries are the major contributors of toxic Cr, Zn and Pb amounting to 35.2, 33.1, and 31.4 mg/L respectively. It was also observed that major contribution of Cu (33.3 mg/L) was from dyes manufacturing units, while maximum Fe concentration of 12.8 mg/L was found in effluent samples released from textile industries. The concentration of Cd and Ni was found maximum in effluent samples collected from pharmaceutical industries amounting to 35.8 and 33.6 mg/L respectively. The overall results point out high concentration of toxic heavy metals in the effluent samples collected from different industries. These industrial effluents will pollute the near by water bodies affecting the growth of vegetation and aquatic life. These toxic heavy metals when released in aquatic environment will enter the food chain through bio-magnification causing various health problems in humans. The results of the present investigation point out the need to implement common objectives, compatible policies and programmes for improvement in the industrial waste water treatment methods

    Longitudinal study of adolescent tobacco use and tobacco control policies in India

    Abstract Background This project will use a multilevel longitudinal cohort study design to assess whether changes in Community Tobacco Environmental (CTE) factors, measured as community compliance with tobacco control policies and community density of tobacco vendors and tobacco advertisements, are associated with adolescent tobacco use in urban India. India’s tobacco control policies regulate secondhand smoke exposure, access to tobacco products and exposure to tobacco marketing. Research data about the association between community level compliance with tobacco control policies and youth tobacco use are largely unavailable, and are needed to inform policy enforcement, implementation and development. Methods The geographic scope will include Mumbai and Kolkata, India. The study protocol calls for an annual comprehensive longitudinal population-based tobacco use risk and protective factors survey in a cohort of 1820 adolescents ages 12–14 years (and their parent) from baseline (Wave 1) to 36-month follow-up (Wave 4). Geographic Information Systems data collection will be used to map tobacco vendors, tobacco advertisements, availability of e-cigarettes, COTPA defined public places, and compliance with tobacco sale, point-of-sale and smoke-free laws. Finally, we will estimate the longitudinal associations between CTE factors and adolescent tobacco use, and assess whether the associations are moderated by family level factors, and mediated by individual level factors. Discussion India experiences a high burden of disease and mortality from tobacco use. To address this burden, significant long-term prevention and control activities need to include the joint impact of policy, community and family factors on adolescent tobacco use onset.
