    Ordovician tectonics of the South European Variscan Realm: new insights from Sardinia

    Although much is known about the Ordovician tectonics of the South European Variscides, aspects of their geodynamic evolution and palaeogeographic reconstruction remain uncertain. In Sardinia, Variscan tectonic units include significant vestiges of Ordovician evolution, such as a fold system that affected only the Cambrian-Lower Ordovician successions, and are cut by a regional angular unconformity. A comparison of the stratigraphy and tectonic structures of the successions below and above the Lower Ordovician unconformity and a reinterpretation of biostratigraphic data allow us to identify significant differences between the stacked tectonic units. The unconformity is sealed as follows: (i) in the Sulcis-Iglesiente Unit (Variscan External Zone, SW Sardinia) by Middle-Upper Ordovician continental and tidal deposits; and (ii) in the Sarrabus and Gerrei units (part of the Variscan Nappe Zone, SE Sardinia) by Middle-Upper Ordovician calc-alkaline volcanic rocks. Therefore, at the same time, one tectonic unit was situated close to a rifting setting and the others were involved in a convergent margin. Of note are the different durations associated with the unconformities in the tectonic units (17 Myr in the Sulcis-Iglesiente Unit, 6 Myr in the Sarrabus and Gerrei units) and the occurrence (or absence) of glacio-marine deposits indicating that the units were located at different palaeo-latitudes during the Ordovician. These results suggest that the SW and SE Sardinia blocks did not share the same geodynamic setting during the Ordovician, implying that they were situated in different palaeogeographic positions at this time and subsequently amalgamated during the Variscan Orogeny. Furthermore, stratigraphic and tectonic correlations with neighbouring areas, such as the eastern Pyrenees, imply alternative palaeogeographic reconstructions to those proposed previously for some peri-Mediterranean Variscan terranes

    Palaeogenomics is contributing to refine our understanding of many major evolutionary events at an unprecedented resolution, with relevant impacts in several fields, including phylogenetics of extinct species. Few extant and extinct animal species from Mediterranean regions have been characterised at the DNA level thus far. The Sardinian pika, Prolagus sardus (Wagner, 1829), was an iconic lagomorph species that populated Sardinia and Corsica and became extinct during the Holocene. There is a certain scientific debate on the phylogenetic assignment of the extinct genus Prolagus to the family Ochotonidae (one of the only two extant families of the order Lagomorpha) or to a separated family Prolagidae, or to the subfamily Prolaginae within the family Ochotonidae. In this study, we successfully reconstructed a portion of the mitogenome of a Sardinian pika dated to the Neolithic period and recovered from the Cabaddaris cave, an archaeological site in Sardinia. Our calibrated phylogeny may support the hypothesis that the genus Prolagus is an independent sister group to the family Ochotonidae that diverged from the Ochotona genus lineage about 30 million years ago. These results may contribute to refine the phylogenetic interpretation of the morphological peculiarities of the Prolagus genus already described by palaeontological studies

    First documentation of the Polygnathoides siluricus conodont Zone (Ludfordian) in South America (Argentina) and the stratigraphic significance of the younger species of Kockelella (Conodonta)

    The coquinoid beds from the middle part of the Los Espejos Formation at the Poblete creek section (Talacasto Creek) yielded abundant conodonts. The genus Kockelella (Walliser) represents the most relevant biostratigraphical genus in this conodont fauna. The co-occurrence of Kockelella maenniki Serpagli and Corradini, Kockelella variabilis ichnusae Serpagli and Corradini, K. variabilis Walliser, Kockelella ortus sardoa (Serpagli & Corradini), and Kockelella ortus absidata (Barrick & Klapper) allow us to record for the first time the Polygnathoides siluricus Zone in South America, which suggests the Ludfordian Stage (late Ludlow). We also propose an accurate correlation of the Los Espejos Formation with the lower Ludfordian deposits from the Carnic Alps, Sardinia, Morocco, Czech Republic, Gotland, and North America.Fil: Gomez, Maria Jose.     Palaeozoic Basement of the Pyrenees

    International audienceIn the Pyrenees, the Cambrian-Lower Ordovician strata represent a quiescent time span with no remarkable tectonic activity, followed by a late Early-Mid Ordovician episode of uplift and erosion that led to the formation of the Sardic unconformity. Silurian sedimentation was widespread and transgressive followed by a Devonian succession characterized by a complex mosaic of sedi-mentary facies. Carboniferous pre-Variscan sediments (Tournaisian-Viséan cherts and limestones) precede the arrival of the synorogenic siliciclastic supplies of the Culm flysch at the Late Serpukhovian. All this succession was subsequently affected by the Serpukhovian-Bashkirian (Variscan) collision, as a result of which, the Palaeozoic rocks were incorporated into the northeastern branch of the Ibero-Armorican Arc
