    This thesis examines and simulates a statistically multiplexed multiple access technique known as Advanced Time Division Multiple Access (ATDMA). The simulations were carried out in a multimedia traffic environment. Parameters that could optimise the network performance in terms of quality, reliability and capacity have been examined using a simulation model. This thesis also examines network architecture and signalling related issues. The simulation results were analysed to propose a suitable ATDMA frame structure in terms of the frame length and the organisation of traffic and reservation slots. The simulation results indicated that the performance of the ATDMA based system can be enhanced when delay insensitive data is transmitted as blocks of packets of a specific size. The simulation results also indicated that the performance of the ATDMA based system can be further enhanced when a video terminal is allocated a single traffic slot as opposed to multiple traffic slots. Further simulations have been carried out to determine the up-link traffic channel capacities and control channel capacities.     Performance management: the neglected imperative of accountability systems in education

    The first aim of this paper is to clarify the concept “performance management” as an aspect of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS). The second is to report on an exploration into the experiences and perceptions of management teams in the implementation of performance management. As part of the qualitative research design, the individual interview was selected for use in this research. Fifteen participants drawn randomly from 24 schools were interviewed. The findings revealed the weakness of integrating development with appraisal since it leads to the neglect of development in favour of appraisal which is linked to incentives. A lack of knowledge and expertise on the IQMS processes such as mentoring, coaching, and monitoring was found to hamper the zeal to implement performance management. Teachers, as co-developers of education policy on the ground, act as a driving force behind the actualisation of transformation in education.     An assessment of Casino gambling on black economic empowerment: Western Cape as a case

    Magister Commercii - MComThe study has three objectives; firstly to assess the (manner of) implementation of black economic empowerment (BEE) principles by casino licence operators in the Western Cape, namely GrandWest, Casino Mykonos, and Caledon Casino & Spa, during the construction and initial operation phases; secondly, to discuss casino gambling from a marketing strategy theory perspective; and thirdly, to measure consumer behaviour theory as demonstrated by casino patrons. Government(s) and casino industry executives present casino gambling as a source of revenue and employment, and disregard the social costs incurred by society in the production of this revenue and employment sustenance.This study is an evaluability assessment study where reports from the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board‟s social equity committee where used for the objective of the study. As a result, the sample of the study was formed by the three above-mentioned casinos that were operating in the Western Cape at the beginning of the project. The proposed government strategy on Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) was critiqued to try and understand the government‟s position relative to the initiative. The social equity committee monitoring reports where analysed to assess the performance of casino operators relative to their BEE undertakings in their licences. Data formed by reports and literature has been summarised and presented to try and help in clarifying the position of casino gambling on black economic empowerment and specifically the (economic) empowering of host communities and society at large.Recommendations where made with the view highlighting the need for a strategy towards greater empowerment of host communities. As a result, the researcher suggests that further research be conducted into the relationship between the profitability of a casino and proliferation of social problems attributed directly to the presence of a casino complex

    Factors associated with teacher burnout in some Gaborone secondary schools in Botswana

    The purpose of this study is to discuss factors that contribute to teacher burnout in Botswana. Teacher burn out is reported to have contributed to a decline in students’ academic performance. For this reason the study intends to solicit information from senior secondary school teachers on any factors that prohibit them from being effectively committed to their duties. The information provided by teachers will help the Ministry of Education and Skills Development improve conditions of service so that teaching and learning are also improved. The methodology of the study was based on the positivistic paradigm using the quantitative method. Data was collected from fifty two senior secondary school teachers using a survey questionnaire in which possible answers were given using the Likert scale. The findings of the study suggest that there are a number of factors that contribute to teacher burnout such as poor working conditions of service, unmanageable class size, poor inadequate decent accommodation and inadequate teaching facilities.  Finally it is argued that the Ministry of Education and Skills Development has an obligation to improve teachers’ terms and conditions of service by ensuring that their remuneration is at par with those with the same qualifications and working at the head office of the same Ministry.  Furthermore, the Ministry needs to look for an assessment system that will assess if teachers are teaching as per the requirements and if so what rewards are to be awarded. In the event that certain teachers are not meeting the set requirements what measures should be put in place to assist such teachers to improve so that they meet the set standards.     An exploration of various clinical settings for the educational preparation of student nurses

    Text in EnglishThe purpose of this study, was to identify and describe factors, which facilitate or impede learning in clinical learning settings. The study adopted an exploratory descriptive approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative designs. Data collection tool, comprised of two sections: Section 1 focused on demographic characteristics. While section 2 addressed study variables of clinical setting, staffing, patient care/ practice standards, nurse manager's commitment and interpersonal relationships. The last section had two parts; part 1 being close ended Likert type scale ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Part 2, was open ended, and solicited respondents' feelings opinions and experiences on factors they perceived to facilitate or impede clinical learning. The findings indicate that the majority of settings studied did not provide adequate factors to facilitate clinical learning. Factors such as availability of learning experiences, acceptable unit organization, space and resource availability, and accessibility to students, adequate staffing with qualified staff who actively participate in teaching, appropriate and quality patient care role modelled, lecturer availability and involvement in clinical teaching, team building and inclusion of students in the team, committed nurse managers involved in students' learning, conducive relationships among staff, students and patients, comfort relationships, advocacy and creating conducive relationship by the nurse manager, were identified as necessary for learning. These factors however, were found to be either lacking, inadequate or inaccessible to students. Findings were based on data from a quota sample of 202 participants proportionately drawn from students, nurse managers and nurse lecturers.     Perceived stress, perceived social support and general well-being among University of KwaZulu-Natal first-year students.

    Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2011.The objective of this study is to examine whether the effects of stress on University of KwaZulu Natal first year students’ well being depend on the level of perceived social support. First year students are faced with the challenges of leaving the comfort of their homes in search for education and experience that enhance their growth. This life transition can be a stressful experience that requires social support from other people in order for the student to enjoy a healthy wellbeing. Methods; One hundred and fifty survey packages, which comprised of four measures: The Demographic Survey, The Multidimensional Scale of Perceives Social Support, The Perceived Stress Scale and The WHO (five) Wellbeing Index were distributed. Ninety three (62%) survey packages were anonymously completed and returned by the participants. Hypotheses; Four hypotheses were tested in this study: Whether the level of perceived social support will moderate the effects of stress on wellbeing of university students; whether females will perceive themselves to have more social support as compared with male students; whether younger students will perceive themselves to have more social support than their older counterparts. And lastly to find out whether students who live at home with their family perceive themselves to have more social support as compared to those that live away from their families, either in on-campus accommodation or renting accommodation alone or with other students. Results; The results obtained indicate that the level of perceived social support moderates the effect of stress on students’ wellbeing. The second hypothesis was also supported on the basis that females perceived themselves to have more social support than their male counterparts. The third hypothesis which sought to find out whether students who live at home with their family perceived themselves to have more social support as compared to those that live away from their families, either on on-campus accommodation or renting out a flat alone or with other students has not been clearly confirmed, therefore is an implication for further research. Lastly, the results do not indicate that younger students perceive themselves to have more social support than their older counterparts. Conclusions; It is evident that social support plays a very important role in the life of a first year student, as it assists them in moderating the effects of stress on their wellbeing. The availability and the way that individual perceive social support depends on the gender of an individual.     Strategy for optimisation of the integration of HIV/AIDS in the mandate of the commission on gender equality in South Africa

    This study was motivated by the commitment of the researcher to contribute towards the agenda for the development of women, in particular women affected and infected with HIV/Aids, through a better understanding and improved knowledge of the national and international legal and policy framework aimed at empowering women in South Africa. This study builds on countless efforts which have been implemented internationally to transform the world and create a peaceful and liveable world for women who have been historically oppressed, unrecognised and, in the case of women affected and infected with HIV, stigmatised. An increasing trend towards recognising the need to advance women and acknowledge their status in the community on the part of the international community was observed and then explored in the literature review which was conducted for the purposes of the study. The development of women is dependent on an enabling environment which is free from all forms of discrimination. Poverty, gender-based violence, cultural perceptions, as well as traditional and religious practices, all contribute to the challenges facing women. In addition, HIV/Aids is a continuous threat and impacts greatly on the lives of both women and their families. The aim of the study was to explore the contribution that the Commission of Gender Equality (CGE) makes towards a better quality of life for women and also to contribute to the development of a strategy to optimise the integration of HIV/Aids issues into the mandate of the CGE. The requisite data was collected through an extensive literature study of the research field, a document analysis and personal interviews with Commissioners of the CGE. The data were complemented and supported by the inputs of focus groups in which community members provided inputs about their experiences of the role played by the CGE at a community level. ii Data revealed limitations in the effective functioning and the measurable impact of the CGE. These were subsequently addressed in the design of a suggested strategic plan. The limitations included aspects relating to CGE organisational structure; the knowledge and skills of personnel, the lack of role clarification; the lack of a coordinated strategy; as well as a deficient working plan which, in its current format, shows a lack of continuity as a result of high staff turnover, a weak continuity strategy when commissioners’ term of office ends, limitations in terms of financial resources, and the absence of monitoring and control systems.Health StudiesD.     Recidivism and Prison Overcrowding due to Denial of Legal Representation in Botswana

    Botswana has been experiencing high rates of recidivism and prison overcrowding, but the causes of these problems have not been explored. Thus, this qualitative study was conducted to investigate whether the denial of legal representation to criminal defendants tried in the customary courts is one of the causes of high rates of recidivism, prison overcrowding, or both. The main research question addressed a possible relationship between these factors and the denial of legal representation, and the study was guided by the punctuated equilibrium theory and the policy feedback theory. Data were collected through semi structured interviews with 10 released first offender prison inmates, 10 released recidivist prison inmates, and 10 professional participants from disciplines in the criminal justice system in addition to reviewing statistics and scholarly research. Data were analyzed through detailed description, categorical aggregation, direct interpretation, which led to naturalistic generalizations and patterns. The results indicated that the denial of legal representation to criminal defendants tried by customary courts appeared to contribute to both recidivism and prison overcrowding, which may undermine public safety and security. The implications of the study for positive social change include informing policy-makers of the need to reform the policy on legal representation to ensure that criminal defendants tried in the customary courts receive fair trials. The additional implications for positive social change include impacting rates of recidivism and prison overcrowding and enhancing community safety and security

    Free Radical Scavenging Activity: Antiproliferative and Proteomics Analyses of the Differential Expression of Apoptotic Proteins in MCF-7 Cells Treated with Acetone Leaf Extract of Diospyros lycioides

    Breast cancer is the most common cancer in South Africa. The acetone leaf extract of Diospyros lycioides was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively for its antioxidant potential using DPPH assay and nitric oxide radical scavenging effect, while the viability of MCF-7 cells was evaluated using the MTT. MCF-7 treated cells were stained with Hoechst 335258 dye and annexin-V-FITC to be evaluated for apoptotic effect of the extract, while mRNA expression levels of apoptotic genes were assessed by quantitative real-time PCR and deferential protein expression levels using 2D gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. Results revealed presence of antioxidant constituents in the extract. Extract was shown to be cytotoxic in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Cytotoxicity was demonstrated to be due to apoptosis, with 70% of the extract-treated cells being annexin-V-positive/PI negative at 48 hours. The extract was also shown to upregulate the expression of p53 gene with concomitant downregulation of the Bcl-2 antiapoptotic gene while differentially expressed proteins were identified as enolase, pyruvate kinase, and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate. The extract in this study was shown to induce apoptosis at an early stage which makes it an ideal source that can be explored for compounds that may be used in the treatment and management of cancer
