Organometallic vapor-phase homoepitaxy of gallium arsenide assisted by a downstream hydrogen afterglow plasma in the growth region
Includes bibliographical references (page 3146).In situ generated arsenic hydrides are reacted downstream with trimethylgallium (TMGa), both in the presence of and in the absence of a downstream hydrogen afterglow plasma. The homoepitaxial activation energy dramatically changes from 62 kcal/mol for the pure thermal to 21 kcal/mol for the plasma-assisted growth. The carbon incorporation mechanism for the plasma-assisted growth at temperatures less than 400 °C has a distinct activation energy for carbon incorporation of 23 kcal/mol, independent of V-III ratios. At temperatures above 400 °C, the level of carbon incorporated in the films reaches a level that appears to be dependent on the gas-phase precursor V-III ratio. The activation energy of the low-temperature region is consistent with the surface decomposition of arsenic hydrides
VLBI study of water maser emission in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC5793. I: Imaging blueshifted emission and the parsec-scale jet
We present the first result of VLBI observations of the blueshifted water
maser emission from the type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC5793, which we combine with
new and previous VLBI observations of continuum emission at 1.7, 5.0, 8.4, 15,
and 22 GHz. Maser emission was detected earlier in single-dish observations and
found to have both red- and blueshifted features relative to the systemic
velocity. We could image only the blueshifted emission, which is located 3.6 pc
southwest of the 22 GHz continuum peak. The blueshifted emission was found to
originate in two clusters that are separated by 0.7 milliarcsecond (0.16 pc).
No compact continuum emission was found within 3.6 pc of the maser spot. A
compact continuum source showing a marginally inverted spectrum between 1.7 and
5.0 GHz was found 4.2 pc southwest of the maser position. The spectral turnover
might be due to synchrotron self-absorption caused by a shock in the jet owing
to collision with dense gas, or it might be due to free-free absorption in an
ionized screen possibly the inner part of a disk, foreground to the jet.
The water maser may be part of a maser disk. If so, it would be rotating in
the opposite sense to the highly inclined galactic disk observed in CO
emission. We estimate a binding mass within 1 pc of the presumed nucleus to be
on the order of 10^7 Msun. Alternatively, the maser emission could result from
the amplification of a radio jet by foreground circumnuclear molecular gas. In
this case, the high blueshift of the maser emission might mean that the masing
region is moving outward away from the molecular gas surrounding an active

4 modalities of periodontal treatment compared over 5 years *
The purpose of the present study was to assess in a clinical trial over 5 years the results following 4 different modalities of periodontal therapy (pocket elimination or reduction surgery, modified Widman flap surgery, subgingival curettage, and scaling and root planing). 90 patients were treated. The treatment methods were applied on a random basis to each of the 4 quadrants of the dentition. The patients were given professional tooth cleaning and oral hygiene instructions every 3 months. Pocket depth and attachment levels were scored once a year. 72 patients completed the 5 years of observation. Both patient means for pocket depth and attachment level as well as % distribution of sites with loss of attachment ≥2 mm and ≥3 mm were compared. For 1-3 mm probing depth, scaling and root planing, as well as subgingival curettage led to significantly less attachment loss than pocket elimination and modified Widman flap surgery. For 4 6 mm pockets, scaling and root planing and curettage had better attachment results than pocket elimination surgery. Effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit of a single annual professional intervention for the prevention of childhood dental caries in a remote rural Indigenous community
Background
The aim of the study is to reduce the high prevalence of tooth decay in children in a remote, rural Indigenous community in Australia, by application of a single annual dental preventive intervention. The study seeks to (1) assess the effectiveness of an annual oral health preventive intervention in slowing the incidence of dental caries in children in this community, (2) identify the mediating role of known risk factors for dental caries and (3) assess the cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit of the intervention.
Methods/design
The intervention is novel in that most dental preventive interventions require regular re-application, which is not possible in resource constrained communities. While tooth decay is preventable, self-care and healthy habits are lacking in these communities, placing more emphasis on health services to deliver an effective dental preventive intervention. Importantly, the study will assess cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness for broader implementation across similar communities in Australia and internationally.
Discussion
There is an urgent need to reduce the burden of dental decay in these communities, by implementing effective, cost-effective, feasible and sustainable dental prevention programs. Expected outcomes of this study include improved oral and general health of children within the community; an understanding of the costs associated with the intervention provided, and its comparison with the costs of allowing new lesions to develop, with associated treatment costs. Findings should be generalisable to similar communities around the world.

Genome-Wide Association Study Meta-Analysis for Parkinson Disease Motor Subtypes
Objective: To discover genetic determinants of Parkinson disease (PD) motor subtypes, including tremor dominant (TD) and postural instability/gait difficulty (PIGD) forms. Methods: In 3,212 PD cases of European ancestry, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) examining 2 complementary outcome traits derived from the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, including dichotomous motor subtype (TD vs PIGD) or a continuous tremor/PIGD score ratio. Logistic or linear regression models were adjusted for sex, age at onset, disease duration, and 5 ancestry principal components, followed by meta-analysis. Results: Among 71 established PD risk variants, we detected multiple suggestive associations with PD motor subtype, including GPNMB (rs199351, psubtype = 0.01, pratio = 0.03), SH3GL2 (rs10756907, psubtype = 0.02, pratio = 0.01), HIP1R (rs10847864, psubtype = 0.02), RIT2 (rs12456492, psubtype = 0.02), and FBRSL1 (rs11610045, psubtype = 0.02). A PD genetic risk score integrating all 71 PD risk variants was also associated with subtype ratio (p = 0.026, Ăź = -0.04, 95% confidence interval = -0.07-0). Based on top results of our GWAS, we identify a novel suggestive association at the STK32B locus (rs2301857, pratio = 6.6 Ă— 10-7), which harbors an independent risk allele for essential tremor. Conclusions: Multiple PD risk alleles may also modify clinical manifestations to influence PD motor subtype. The discovery of a novel variant at STK32B suggests a possible overlap between genetic risk for essential tremor and tremor-dominant PD
