    Paraconsistent logics, conventionalism and ontology

    Get PDF
Paraconsistent logics may be viewed as one of the last elements in a series of rapid developments in science in the 19th and early 20th c., triggered by the appearance of non-Euclidean geometries. The philosophy of conventionalism, which gave a metatheoretical framework to the basic changes involved, may also help in evaluating the truth import of (paraconsistent) logic and in determining its relation to ontology

Efficient fe strategies for springback prediction – material modelling and computational aspects

Blanks of sheet metal are characterized by an intrinsic plastic anisotropic behaviour resulting from the plastic deformation during the rolling of sheets. Another type of anisotropy is elastic anisotropy which might be essential especially during elastic recovery processes during unloading after forming and springback. Thus, this paper focuses on the study of the sensitivity of the amount of springback in unconstrained bending with respect to elastic anisotropy. A finite strain constitutive model for evolving elastic and plastic anisotropy combining nonlinear isotropic and kinematic hardening is discussed. The evolution of elastic anisotropy is described by representing the Helmholtz free energy as a function of a family of evolving structure tensors. In addition, plastic anisotropy is modelled via the dependence of the yield surface on the same family of structure tensors. The constitutive equations of the model are implemented as a user material subroutine UMAT in the commercial solver ABAQUS/Standard, which is then applied to the simulation of springback in unconstrained bending

    Logical aspects of (natural) language

"The paper consists of two parts.Part one presents a number of ambiguities the title of the volume conveys in each of its three Polish lexemes (which are rather similar to the ones used in the English version of the tile). The context of the Birthday leads the author to choose a meaning of the title and accept it as defining the area of further investigation. Part two poses two main questions: 1) does natural language exist in a non – individual way? The answer suggested is it may exist as a result of an (free-will) compromise. Finally, part two addresses metalinguistic questions: a)is formal logic a specialized part of linguistics and b) may one present a methodological evaluation of formal works? Both of these are answered with a tentative yes. Tarski’s t-scheme as an alleged basis of Montague semantics

My point in this paper is to focus on some details of Alfred Tarski’s writing that in my opinion have not been aptly represented — or aptly rejected — in Richard Montague’s grammar and to agree with those who share Tarski’s view that human language is something uncapturable. The paper consists of two parts, concerning 1) some attempts to formalize the non-declarative utterances, and 2) the limitations of T-scheme and of Montague grammar

Two kinds of unexpected problems in writings on logic

In some texts concerning logic the reader faces unexpected problems, namely: 1) incongruities between the commentary and logical solutions offered and 2) mistakes concerning external facts

Revealing the Exciton Fine Structure in PbSe Nanocrystal Quantum Dots

We measure the photoluminescence (PL) lifetime, τ\tau, of excitons in colloidal PbSe nanocrystals (NCs) at low temperatures to 270~mK and in high magnetic fields to 15~T. For all NCs (1.3-2.3~nm radii), τ\tau increases sharply below 10~K but saturates by 500~mK. In contrast to the usual picture of well-separated ``bright" and ``dark" exciton states (found, e.g., in CdSe NCs), these dynamics fit remarkably well to a system having two exciton states with comparable - but small - oscillator strengths that are separated by only 300-900 μ\mueV. Importantly, magnetic fields reduce τ\tau below 10~K, consistent with field-induced mixing between the two states. Magnetic circular dichroism studies reveal exciton g-factors from 2-5, and magneto-PL shows >>10\% circularly polarized emission.Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letter

The role of visfatin in pathogenesis of gestational diabetes (GDM)

    Get PDF
Gestational diabetes (GDM) is defined as a glucose intolerance of varying severity with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. Two major metabolic disorders: insulin resistance and β-cells dysfunction, play currently major role in pathogenesis of GDM. Adipose tissue is an organ involved in production of adipokines, which have various influence on metabolism of glucose and lipids. Visfatin is an adipokine mainly produced and secreted by the fat tissue. It exerts an insulin-like effect by binding to the insulin receptor-1 and have hypoglycemic effect. Visfatin appears to be an important factor in the pathophysiology of GDM. The aim of this article is to review the literature concerning the relationship between the adipokine mentioned above and GDM, and to clarify its role in the pathophysiology of GDM
