Weak solutions to Allen-Cahn-like equations modelling consolidation of porous media
We study the weak solvability of a system of coupled Allen--Cahn--like equations resembling cross--diffusion which is arising as a model for the consolidation of saturated porous media. Besides using energy like estimates, we cast the special structure of the system in the framework of the Leray--Schauder fixed point principle and ensure this way the local existence of strong solutions to a regularised version of our system. Furthermore, weak convergence techniques ensure the existence of weak solutions to the original consolidation problem. The uniqueness of global-in-time solutions is guaranteed in a particular case. Investigations of ternary Cu3SbS3 thin films as absorber in photovoltaic devices
Magnetron sputtered Cu-Sb metallic precursors were sulphidised on glass and molybdenum/glass substrates at 6 different temperatures. Two techniques were adopted for the elemental sulphidisation process. Precursors sulphidised using evaporated elemental sulphur were successfully converted into Cu3SbS3 solar absorber layers on molybdenum substrates. The as-sulphidised films exhibited p-type conductivity were produced in the limited response when analysed using a Eu+ electrolyte arrangement to measure the photocurrent. The films exhibited an energy bandgap value of 1.84eV
A search for variable white dwarfs in large area time domain surveys: a pilot study in SDSS Stripe 82
We present a method to reliably select variable white dwarfs from large area
time domain surveys and apply this method in a pilot study to search for
pulsating white dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82. From a sample
400 high-confidence white dwarf candidates, we identify 24 which show
significant variability in their multi-epoch Stripe 82 data. Using colours, we
further selected a sample of pulsating white dwarf (ZZ Ceti) candidates and
obtained high cadence follow up for six targets. We confirm five of our
candidates as cool ZZ Cetis, three of which are new discoveries. Among our 24
candidates we also identify: one eclipsing binary, two magnetic white dwarfs
and one pulsating PG1159 star. Finally we discuss the possible causes for the
variability detected in the remaining targets. Even with sparse multi-epoch
data over the limited area of Stripe 82, we demonstrate that our selection
method can successfully identify various types of variable white dwarfs and
efficiently select high-confidence ZZ Ceti candidates.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 14 pages, 11 figure
Bioaccumulation modelling and sensitivity analysis for discovering key players in contaminated food webs: the case study of PCBs in the Adriatic Sea
Modelling bioaccumulation processes at the food web level is the main step to analyse the effects of pollutants at the global
ecosystem level. A crucial question is understanding which species play a key role in the trophic transfer of contaminants to
disclose the contribution of feeding linkages and the importance of trophic dependencies in bioaccumulation dynamics. In this
work we present a computational framework to model the bioaccumulation of organic chemicals in aquatic food webs, and to
discover key species in polluted ecosystems. As a result, we reconstruct the first PCBs bioaccumulation model of the Adriatic food
web, estimated after an extensive review of published concentration data. We define a novel index aimed to identify the key species
in contaminated networks, Sensitivity Centrality, and based on sensitivity analysis. The index is computed from a dynamic ODE
model parametrised from the estimated PCBs bioaccumulation model and compared with a set of established trophic indices of
centrality. Results evidence the occurrence of PCBs biomagnification in the Adriatic food web, and highlight the dependence of
bioaccumulation on trophic dynamics and external factors like fishing activity. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the introduced
Sensitivity Centrality in identifying the set of species with the highest impact on the total contaminant flows and on the efficiency
of contaminant transport within the food web
Use of a partial least squares regression model to predict Test Day of milk, fat and protein yields in dairy goats
A model able to predict missing test day data for milk, fat and protein yields on the basis of few recorded tests was proposed, based on the partial least squares (PLS) regression technique, a multivariate method that is able to solve problems related to high collinearity among predictors. A data set of 1731 lactations of Sarda breed dairy Goats was split into two data sets, one for model estimation and the other for the evaluation of PLS prediction capability. Eight scenarios of simplified recording schemes for fat and protein yields were simulated. Correlations among predicted and observed test day yields were quite high (from 050 to 088 and from 053 to 096 for fat and protein yields, respectively, in the different scenarios). Results highlight great flexibility and accuracy of this multivariate technique
