Improving InSAR geodesy using global atmospheric models

    Get PDF
Spatial and temporal variations of pressure, temperature and water vapor content in the atmosphere introduce significant confounding delays in Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) observations of ground deformation and bias estimatesof regional strain rates. Producing robust estimates of tropospheric delays remains one of the key challenges in increasing the accuracy of ground deformation measurements using InSAR. Recent studies revealed the efficiency of global atmospheric reanalysis to mitigate the impact of tropospheric delays, motivating further exploration of their potential. Here, we explore the effectiveness of these models in several geographic and tectonic settings on both single interferograms and time series analysis products. Both hydrostatic and wet contributions to the phase delay are important to account for. We validate these path delay corrections by comparing with estimates of vertically integrated atmospheric water vapor content derived from the passive multi-spectral imager MERIS, onboard the ENVISAT satellite. Generally, the performance of the prediction depends on the vigor of atmospheric turbulence. We discuss (1) how separating atmospheric and orbital contributions allows one to better measure long wavelength deformation, (2) how atmospheric delays affect measurements of surface deformation following earthquakes and (3) we show that such a method allows us to reduce biases in multi-year strain rate estimates by reducing the influence of unevenly sampled seasonal oscillations of the tropospheric delay

Exo-zodiacal disk mapper: a space interferometer to detect and map zodiacal disks around nearby stars

    Get PDF
We propose a concept for a space mission designed to make a survey of potential zodiacal dust disks around nearby stars in the mid-IR. We show that a 10-meter baseline nulling interferometer with two 0.6-meter apertures located in a 1 X 1 AU heliocentric orbit would allow for the survey of about 400 stars in the solar neighborhood and permit a first order determination of the disk inclination and of the dust density and temperature radius dependence. The high dynamic range of the instrument may also be used to study an additional astrophysical phenomena. Beyond its own scientific merit, such a mission would also serve as a technological precursor to a larger interferometer of the type being considered for the detection of earth-like planets

    Get PDF

A Genome-Wide Association Study of Red Blood Cell Traits Using the Electronic Medical Record

The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is a potential source for high throughput phenotyping to conduct genome-wide association studies (GWAS), including those of medically relevant quantitative traits. We describe use of the Mayo Clinic EMR to conduct a GWAS of red blood cell (RBC) traits in a cohort of patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and controls without PAD.Results for hemoglobin level, hematocrit, RBC count, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration were extracted from the EMR from January 1994 to September 2009. Out of 35,159 RBC trait values in 3,411 patients, we excluded 12,864 values in 1,165 patients that had been measured during hospitalization or in the setting of hematological disease, malignancy, or use of drugs that affect RBC traits, leaving a final genotyped sample of 3,012, 80% of whom had ≥2 measurements. The median of each RBC trait was used in the genetic analyses, which were conducted using an additive model that adjusted for age, sex, and PAD status. We identified four genomic loci that were associated (P<5 × 10(-8)) with one or more of the RBC traits (HBLS1/MYB on 6q23.3, TMPRSS6 on 22q12.3, HFE on 6p22.1, and SLC17A1 on 6p22.2). Three of these loci (HBLS1/MYB, TMPRSS6, and HFE) had been identified in recent GWAS and the allele frequencies, effect sizes, and the directions of effects of the replicated SNPs were similar to the prior studies. Our results demonstrate feasibility of using the EMR to conduct high throughput genomic studies of medically relevant quantitative traits

Crossover from two- to three-dimensional critical behavior for nearly antiferromagnetic itinerant electrons

The crossover from two- to three-dimensional critical behavior of nearly antiferromagnetic itinerant electrons is studied in a regime where the inter-plane single-particle motion of electrons is quantum-mechanically incoherent because of thermal fluctuations. This is a relevant regime for very anisotropic materials like the cuprates. The problem is studied within the Two-Particle Self-Consistent approach (TPSC), that has been previously shown to give a quantitative description of Monte Carlo data for the Hubbard model. It is shown that TPSC belongs to the nn\rightarrow \infty limit of the O(n)O\left( n\right) universality class. However, contrary to the usual approaches, cutoffs appear naturally in the microscopic TPSC theory so that parameter-free calculations can be done for Hubbard models with arbitrary band structure. A general discussion of universality in the renormalized-classical crossover from d=2d=2 to d=3d=3 is also given.Comment: Revtex, 23 pages + 6 postcript figures (with epsfile
