    Taming the interoperability challenges of complex IoT systems

    of communication protocols and data formats; hence ensuring diverse devices can interoperate with one another remains a significant challenge. Model-driven development and testing solutions have been proposed as methods to aid software developers achieve interoperability compliance in the face of this increasing complexity. However, current approaches often involve complicated and domain specific models (e.g. web services described by WSDL). In this paper, we explore a lightweight, middleware independent, model-driven development framework to help developers tame the challenges of composing IoT services that interoperate with one another. The framework is based upon two key contributions: i) patterns of interoperability behaviour, and ii) a software framework to monitor and reason about interoperability success or failure. We show using a case-study from the FI-WARE Future Internet Service domain that this interoperability framework can support non-expert developers address interoperability challenges. We also deployed tools built atop the framework and made them available in the XIFI large-scale FI-PPP test environment

    Accuracy assessment of Tri-plane B-mode ultrasound for non-invasive 3D kinematic analysis of knee joints

    BACKGROUND Currently the clinical standard for measuring the motion of the bones in knee joints with sufficient precision involves implanting tantalum beads into the bones. These beads appear as high intensity features in radiographs and can be used for precise kinematic measurements. This procedure imposes a strong coupling between accuracy and invasiveness. In this paper, a tri-plane B-mode ultrasound (US) based non-invasive approach is proposed for use in kinematic analysis of knee joints in 3D space. METHODS The 3D analysis is performed using image processing procedures on the 2D US slices. The novelty of the proposed procedure and its applicability to the unconstrained 3D kinematic analysis of knee joints is outlined. An error analysis for establishing the method's feasibility is included for different artificial compositions of a knee joint phantom. Some in-vivo and in-vitro scans are presented to demonstrate that US scans reveal enough anatomical details, which further supports the experimental setup used using knee bone phantoms. RESULTS The error between the displacements measured by the registration of the US image slices and the true displacements of the respective slices measured using the precision mechanical stages on the experimental apparatus is evaluated for translation and rotation in two simulated environments. The mean and standard deviation of errors are shown in tabular form. This method provides an average measurement precision of less than 0.1 mm and 0.1 degrees, respectively. CONCLUSION In this paper, we have presented a novel non-invasive approach to measuring the motion of the bones in a knee using tri-plane B-mode ultrasound and image registration. In our study, the image registration method determines the position of bony landmarks relative to a B-mode ultrasound sensor array with sub-pixel accuracy. The advantages of our proposed system over previous techniques are that it is non-invasive, does not require the use of ionizing radiation and can be used conveniently if miniaturized.This work has been supported by School of Engineering & IT, UNSW Canberra, under Research Publication Fellowship

According to the report in a hostile newspaper, Wentworth issued this demand so that ‘his countrymen might have an opportunity of perceiving how a grateful community could appreciate, reward and honour the services of any individual who devoted sincerely his talents and his leisure to the services of his fellow citizens’.

    The primary objective of the experiments was to investigate the wrist motion of a person while they were carrying out a prehensile task from a clinical hand function test. A sixcamera movement system was used to observe the wrist motion of 10 participants. A very light sphere and a heavy sphere were used in the experiments to study any mass effects. While seated at a table, a participant moved a sphere over a small obstacle using their dominant hand. The participants were observed to move their wrist at a constant angular velocity. This phenomenon has not been reported previously. Theoretically, the muscles of the wrist provide an impulse of force at the start of the rotation while the forearm maintains a constant vertical force on a sphere. Light–heavy mean differences for the velocities, absolute velocities, angles and times taken showed no significant differences (p¼0.05)

    Predictors of hospital admission when presenting with acute-on-chronic breathlessness: binary logistic regression

    BackgroundBreathlessness due to medical conditions commonly causes emergency department presentations and unplanned admissions. Acute-on-chronic breathlessness is a reason for 20% of emergency presentations by ambulance with 69% of these being admitted. The emergency department may be inappropriate for many presenting with acute-on-chronic breathlessness. AimTo examine predictors of emergency department departure status in people with acute-on-chronic breathlessness. Design, Setting and MethodSecondary analysis of patient-report survey and clinical record data from consecutive eligible attendees by ambulance. Variables associated with emergency department departure status (unifactorial analyses; p<0.05) were included in a binary logistic regression model. The study was conducted in a single tertiary hospital.Consecutive survey participants presenting in May 2015 with capacity were eligible. 1,212/1,345 surveys were completed. 245/1,212 presented with acute-on-chronic breathlessness, 171 of whom consented to clinical record review and were included in this analysis. ResultsIn the final model, the odds of admission were increased with every extra year of age [OR 1.041 (95% CI: 1.016 to 1.066)], having talked to a specialist doctor about breathlessness [9.262 (1.066 to 80.491)] and having a known history of a heart condition [4.177 (1.680 to 10.386)]. Odds of admission were decreased with every percentage increase in oxygen saturation [0.826 (0.701 to 0.974)].Conclusion Older age, lower oxygen saturation, having talked to a specialist, and having history of a cardiac condition predict hospital admission in people presenting to the emergency department with acute-on-chronic breathlessness. These clinical factors could be assessed in the community and may inform the decision regarding conveyance
