Preparing Teachers: Highly Qualified to Do What? Editors’ introduction
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 has had significant effects on teacher preparation programs, both in terms of changes required for policy compliance and through important program adjustments. These adjustments have largely been made in response to changes in partner schools and districts, where pacing guides, scripted curricula, benchmark testing and program improvement mandates are now the norm. In the context of anticipated robust policy activity in K-12 education and teacher education (e.g., possible re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, adoption of the Common Core Standards, new teacher certification performance assessments, etc.), it is important to understand the ways in which the current federal law, focused primarily on K-12 education, has also shaped teacher preparation programs. New models for PIXE simulation with Geant4
Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) is a physical effect that is not yet
adequately modelled in Geant4. The current status as in Geant4 9.2 release is
reviewed and new developments are described. The capabilities of the software
prototype are illustrated in application to the shielding of the X-ray
detectors of the eROSITA telescope on the upcoming Spectrum-X-Gamma space

R&D on co-working transport schemes in Geant4
A research and development (R&D) project related to the extension of the
Geant4 toolkit has been recently launched to address fundamental methods in
radiation transport simulation. The project focuses on simulation at different
scales in the same experimental environment; this problem requires new methods
across the current boundaries of condensed-random-walk and discrete transport
schemes. The new developments have been motivated by experimental requirements
in various domains, including nanodosimetry, astronomy and detector

Cooperation and Innovation Performance in Rural, Low-Technology Regions
This paper assesses the extent to which cooperation impacts innovation performance of firms in rural regions characterized by a solid economic performance despite a low-technology industrial structure. Particular emphasis is placed on the spatial and functional dimension of cooperation. Generic results for the German region of Lower Bavaria show that firms do not profit primarily from R&D-intensive forms of cooperation, but that other forms of cooperation are more important for regional firms. For policymakers, this implies that an exclusive focus on R&D-based regional innovation policies may be neither appropriate nor sufficient for stimulating innovativeness in this type of region
