HO CHI MINH’S THOUGHTS ABOUT THE INTELLIGENTSIA

    Get PDF
Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts about the intelligentsia are one of the basic and significant components in the ideological system. In term of the intelligentsia, Ho Chi Minh began studying the characteristics, role and position in the revolution, construction and development of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh said that if we desire to construct the country, we have to consider the training, appointment and development of the intelligentsia as the most crucial task. This idea does not only make contribution to the theoretical treasure about the intelligentsia in the world but also has its theoretical and practical meaning for the renewal process in Vietnam.  Article visualizations

The gender wealth gap by household head in Vietnam

    Get PDF
While the gender income gap has been examined extensively, the gender wealth gap has largely been ignored, especially for emerging markets such as Vietnam. The lack of serious analysis has caused great concern for practitioners and policymakers as public policy targeting the inequality in income and wealth across genders has not achieved their desired outcomes. Previous studies on gender in emerging markets have focused on income rather than wealth. This paper provides a comprehensive review and insightful policy recommendations on the important issue. Using data from Vietnam's Household Living Standard Survey (VHLSS), the paper examines the gender wealth inequality for sole-head families and partner-head families in Vietnam in 2016, the latest year for which data are available. In addition, the paper extends the Machado-Mata decomposition technique based on the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, which was developed for quantile regressions, to examine the relationship across the distributions of wealth accumulation. The empirical findings from the paper indicate that, among partnered heads, female-head families experienced a larger gap of wealth accumulation. At the lower quantiles of wealth accumulation, the gender wealth gap is primarily associated with different characteristics for both sole and partner-head households. At the median and upper tails of the distribution of wealth accumulation, gender differences in endowments (such as education level and living area) are the main determinants in explaining the wealth gap. Given the empirical findings in the paper, policy implications emerge for the Vietnam Government to consider policies targeting a support for females as female-head families appear to be poorer than their male-head counterparts in terms of wealth.</p

Improving Efficiency of Incremental Mining by Trie Structure and Pre-Large Itemsets

    Get PDF
Incremental data mining has been discussed widely in recent years, as it has many practical applications, and various incremental mining algorithms have been proposed. Hong et al. proposed an efficient incremental mining algorithm for handling newly inserted transactions by using the concept of pre-large itemsets. The algorithm aimed to reduce the need to rescan the original database and also cut maintenance costs. Recently, Lin et al. proposed the Pre-FUFP algorithm to handle new transactions more efficiently, and make it easier to update the FP-tree. However, frequent itemsets must be mined from the FP-growth algorithm. In this paper, we propose a Pre-FUT algorithm (Fast-Update algorithm using the Trie data structure and the concept of pre-large itemsets), which not only builds and updates the trie structure when new transactions are inserted, but also mines all the frequent itemsets easily from the tree. Experimental results show the good performance of the proposed algorithm

Firm History and Managerial Entrenchment: Empirical Evidence for Vietnam Listed Firms

    Get PDF
Managerial entrenchment occurs when managers are able to manipulate financing decisions to support their own interests rather than those of shareholders. Such possible actions can involve deception and fraud. Furthermore, the market timing activity is explained by managers' financing decisions through which companies choose to raise debt or equity to finance their investment opportunities. Nevertheless, the relationship between managerial entrenchment and leverage ratio, together with the link between market timing and leverage ratio, have not been considered carefully and investigated in the Vietnamese context. The paper provides empirical evidence of the effect of managerial entrenchment and market timing through firms' histories on leverage ratio in Vietnam using a sample of 289 non-financial firms listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HOSE) during the period 2006-2017. OLS, GMM and the endogenous switching methods are used for estimating the models. Findings from the paper indicate that there is a negative relationship between managerial entrenchment and leverage ratio, and that there is a negative effect of firm history, including financial deficit, various timing measures, and stock price history on the leverage ratios of Vietnam's listed firms

BACKGROUND: Maxillary Lefort I osteotomy, mandibular bilateral sagittal split ramus was frequently used in correcting skeletal class III malocclusion. There was a lack of research on class III malocclusion patients’ quality of life (QoL) after bimaxillary osteotomy. AIM: Class I Intermaxillary relationship was achieved, aesthetic was significantly improved. Significant improvement in Class III skeletal patients’ quality of life was acquired. The achievement of harmonious face would be beneficial to the facial aesthetics of patients, thus improving the quality of life. METHODS: Harmonious face index is an effective criterion in assessing the surgery’s outcome. In this study was conducted on 30 patients at Hanoi National Hospital of Odontostomatology, Viet Duc Hospital, and Hong Ngoc Hospital from April 2017 to April 2018, and it was a quasi-experimental study with self-comparison, 12 months follow up. RESULTS: Orthognathic surgery effectively corrected malocclusion crossbite, dental compensation, and helped to improve facial aesthetics. 100% of patients had the quality of life improved, good quality of life consisted of 86.7%. In comparison with a harmonious facial index of Kinh ethnic in Vietnam, 70% of patients achieved skeletal harmony, 63.3% of patients achieved dental harmony, 80% achieved soft tissue harmony. CONCLUSIONS: Vietnamese harmonious facial index should be used in planning and pre-surgical simulatio

Exploring the genetic diversity of Edwardsiella ictaluri in Vietnamese striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) farms over a 20-year period

Since first being identified in 1999, disease outbreaks from Edwardsiella ictaluri remain a significant health challenge for the farmed catfish sector in Vietnam. To better understand the population structure of E. ictaluri circulating in Vietnamese striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) farms, this study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of 83 E. ictaluri isolates recovered from natural disease outbreaks occurring in the Mekong Delta region between 2001 and 2021. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis resolved isolates into 15 pulsotypes following restriction digest with speI, with a Simpson’s diversity index of 0.8548. The genetic fingerprints of isolates recovered from recent outbreaks across different provinces were highly shared (100% similarity), suggesting clonal expansion within the production systems situated in the Mekong Delta region. Findings from this study also showed that E. ictaluri populations circulating this region have changed over time, as isolates recovered between 2001 and 2011 were genetically distinct from those recovered after 2017. Furthermore, isolates recovered after 2004 and 2010 lacked the virulence gene traD and a 5.8 Kb plasmid DNA fragment, respectively. Findings from this study illustrate the need for continued epidemiological monitoring of E. ictaluri to ensure prevention and treatment strategies in the Vietnamese striped catfish sector remain robust and effective

The results of deep magnetotelluric sounding for studying the Nha Trang - Tanh Linh fault

    Get PDF
The profile of deep magnetotelluric sounding (MT) from Duc Trong - Tuy Phong has been carried out in Lam Dong and Binh Thuan  provinces. The length of the Duc Trong - Tuy Phong profile is about 80 km with 15 stations and the distance between the stations measures about 5 km. Two-dimensional MT inversion was used to find a resistivity model that fits the data. The 2D resistivity model allows determining position and development formation of the Nha Trang - Tanh Linh  fault. This is the deep fault, which is showed by the boundaries of remarkable change of resistivity. In the near surface of the Earth (from ground to the depth of 6 km), the angle of inclination of this fault is about 60o; in the next part, the direction of the Nha Trang - Tanh Linh  faut is vertical. Geoelectrical section of the Nha Trang - Tanh Linh  profile shows that the resistivity of mid-crust is higher than that of lower-crust and of upper-crust

Efficacy of a high potency O1 Manisa monovalent vaccine against heterologous challenge with a FMDV O Mya98 lineage virus in pigs 4 and 7 days post vaccination

Early protection with a high potency (>6PD50) foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) O1 Manisa (Middle-EastSouth Asia lineage) vaccine against challenge with O/VIT/2010 (O Mya98 lineage) was tested in pigs. Only two pigs that were vaccinated seven days prior to challenge had any demonstrable antibodies as a result of vaccination at the time of challenge. However, 80% and 60% of pigs that were vaccinated seven and four days prior to coronary band challenge were protected. Vaccination significantly reduced the amount of virus excreted in nasal swabs, saliva and faeces compared to unvaccinated and infected controls. Virus and viral RNA could be detected in some pigs until termination of the experiment 14 days after challenge.Antibodies to the non-structural proteins (NSP) were detected in only one pig that was challenged four days post vaccination (dpv) and transiently in two pigs that were challenged seven dpv at only one timepoint. For each vaccine and control group, a group of unvaccinated pigs were kept in the same room but with no direct contact with the infected pigs to determine whether vaccination prevented transmission. Despite the presence of live virus and viral RNA in these indirect contact pigs, the groups in contact with the vaccinated and infected pigs did not develop clinical signs nor did they sero-convert. Contact pigs in the same room as unvaccinated challenged controls did show signs of disease and virus infection that resulted in sero-conversion to the NSP. A breach of the wall that separated the two groups at nine days post challenge might have contributed to this finding. This study showed that high potency vaccine can provide protection to pigs soon after vaccination and that aerosol transmission within rooms is a rare event.Funding was provided in part by the livestock industries in Australia through Animal Health Australia. The AHA funds are matched through the Meat and Livestock Australia Donor Company by the Australian Government under MLA Project P.PSH 0652.http://www.elsevier.com/locate/vaccinehb201
