Effects of spaceflight on the proliferation of jejunal mucosal cells
The purpose of this project was to test the hypothesis that the generalized, whole body decrease in synthetic activity due to microgravity conditions encountered during spaceflight would be demonstrable in cells and tissues characterized by a rapid rate of turnover. Jejunal mucosal cells were chosen as a model since these cells are among the most rapidly proliferating in the body. Accordingly, the percentage of mitotic cells present in the crypts of Lieberkuhn in each of 5 rats flown on the COSMOS 2044 mission were compared to the percentage of mitotic cells present in the crypts in rats included in each of 3 ground control groups (i.e., vivarium, synchronous and caudal-elevated). No significant difference (p greater than .05) was detected in mitotic indices between the flight and vivarium group. Although the ability of jejunal mucosal cells to divide by mitosis was not impaired in flight group, there was, however, a reduction in the length of villi and depth of crypts. The concommitant reduction in villus length and crypth depth in the flight group probably reflects changes in connective tissue components within the core of villi
Geodynamo and mantle convection simulations on the Earth Simulator using the Yin-Yang grid
We have developed finite difference codes based on the Yin-Yang grid for the
geodynamo simulation and the mantle convection simulation. The Yin-Yang grid is
a kind of spherical overset grid that is composed of two identical component
grids. The intrinsic simplicity of the mesh configuration of the Yin-Yang grid
enables us to develop highly optimized simulation codes on massively parallel
supercomputers. The Yin-Yang geodynamo code has achieved 15.2 Tflops with 4096
processors on the Earth Simulator. This represents 46% of the theoretical peak
performance. The Yin-Yang mantle code has enabled us to carry out mantle
convection simulations in realistic regimes with a Rayleigh number of
including strongly temperature-dependent viscosity with spatial contrast up to

How well do CMIP5 climate simulations replicate historical trends and patterns of meteorological droughts?
Assessing the uncertainties and understanding the deficiencies of climate models are fundamental to developing adaptation strategies. The objective of this study is to understand how well Coupled Model Intercomparison-Phase 5 (CMIP5) climate model simulations replicate ground-based observations of continental drought areas and their trends. The CMIP5 multimodel ensemble encompasses the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) ground-based observations of area under drought at all time steps. However, most model members overestimate the areas under extreme drought, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere (SH). Furthermore, the results show that the time series of observations and CMIP5 simulations of areas under drought exhibit more variability in the SH than in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). The trend analysis of areas under drought reveals that the observational data exhibit a significant positive trend at the significance level of 0.05 over all land areas. The observed trend is reproduced by about three-fourths of the CMIP5 models when considering total land areas in drought. While models are generally consistent with observations at a global (or hemispheric) scale, most models do not agree with observed regional drying and wetting trends. Over many regions, at most 40% of the CMIP5 models are in agreement with the trends of CRU observations. The drying/wetting trends calculated using the 3 months Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) values show better agreement with the corresponding CRU values than with the observed annual mean precipitation rates. Pixel-scale evaluation of CMIP5 models indicates that no single model demonstrates an overall superior performance relative to the other models
Unbiased estimates of galaxy scaling relations from photometric redshift surveys
Many physical properties of galaxies correlate with one another, and these
correlations are often used to constrain galaxy formation models. Such
correlations include the color-magnitude relation, the luminosity-size
relation, the Fundamental Plane, etc. However, the transformation from
observable (e.g. angular size, apparent brightness) to physical quantity
(physical size, luminosity), is often distance-dependent. Noise in the distance
estimate will lead to biased estimates of these correlations, thus compromising
the ability of photometric redshift surveys to constrain galaxy formation
models. We describe two methods which can remove this bias. One is a
generalization of the V_max method, and the other is a maximum likelihood
approach. We illustrate their effectiveness by studying the size-luminosity
relation in a mock catalog, although both methods can be applied to other
scaling relations as well. We show that if one simply uses photometric
redshifts one obtains a biased relation; our methods correct for this bias and
recover the true relation
Computational design of natural laminar flow wings for transonic transport application
Two research programs are described which directly relate to the application of natural laminar flow (NLF) technology to transonic transport-type wind planforms. Each involved using state-of-the-art computational methods to design three-dimensional wing contours which generate significant runs of favorable pressure gradients. The first program supported the Variable Sweep Transition Flight Experiment and involves design of a full-span glove which extends from the leading edge to the spoiler hinge line on the upper surface of an F-14 outer wing panel. Boundary-layer and static-pressure data will be measured on this design during the supporting wind-tunnel and flight tests. These data will then be analyzed and used to infer the relationship between crossflow and Tollmein-Schlichting disturbances on laminar boundary-layer transition. A wing was designed computationally for a corporate transport aircraft in the second program. The resulting wing design generated favorable pressure gradients from the leading edge aft to the mid-chord on both upper and lower surfaces at the cruise design point. Detailed descriptions of the computational design approach are presented along with the various constraints imposed on each of the designs. Wing surface pressure distributions, which support the design objective and were derived from transonic three-dimensional analyses codes, are also presented. Observation of a 2D Bose-gas: from thermal to quasi-condensate to superfluid
We present experimental results on a Bose gas in a quasi-2D geometry near the
Berezinskii, Kosterlitz and Thouless (BKT) transition temperature. By measuring
the density profile, \textit{in situ} and after time of flight, and the
coherence length, we identify different states of the gas. In particular, we
observe that the gas develops a bimodal distribution without long range order.
In this state, the gas presents a longer coherence length than the thermal
cloud; it is quasi-condensed but is not superfluid. Experimental evidence
indicates that we observe the superfluid transition (BKT transition).Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
