Mapping the Migratory Movements
Based on several conventional geography works and/or artistic works – some of them made by the authors of this paper –, this article focuses on how the mapping of international migrations has evolved since the beginning of the 1990s. The representation of migratory movements, which oscillates between arrows, measurements of stocks and different forms of design, implies both scientific and political stakes for the cartography and geography of migrations. After making a brief recalling of the changes that the mapping of migratory flows has experienced from its origins in the 19th century until today, the authors refer to the main technical and epistemological challenges that cartography of migratory movements and the presentations of itineraries raise nowadays. Finally the article analyses the new cartographic forms that have emerged since the beginning of the 2000s within the interconnected domains of sciences, arts, and militancy.Ă€ partir de diverses rĂ©alisations conventionnelles en gĂ©ographie et/ou artistiques, parmi lesquels des travaux rĂ©alisĂ©s par les auteurs, cet article s’intĂ©resse Ă la manière dont la cartographie des migrations internationales a Ă©voluĂ© depuis le dĂ©but des annĂ©es 1990.
International audienceThe Experimental Cartography Workshop, open to researchers coming from various scientific disciplines (geography, sociology, environmental psychology, anthropology, ethnography, design, art, architecture, town planning, etc.) proposes to "dive into the map", to work on the cartographic intention by appropriating and playing around the cartographic codes. On the basis of a proposal (Identity map [card], sensitive walk and visual restitution...), the participants are invited to create their own representations of the territory [the world]. Our proposal pretends to be an introduction to the original approach experienced during intensive three-day work in a short format (half a day, three hours min.). Two different kinds of instructions can be implemented : the creation of an "Identity map" , in order to project oneself into the map on the basis of our own history and life itineraries ; the visual restitution of a "sensitive walk" (working solo or as a group).L'Atelier de cartographie expérimentale, ouvert à toutes disciplines (géographie, sociologie, psychologie environnementale, anthropologie, ethnographie, design, art, architecture, urbanisme, etc.) propose de « plonger dans la carte », de travailler sur l'intention cartographique en s'appropriant et jouant avec les codes cartographiques.

Tentacular thinking in storied places : a deep-mapping of an art-science-activist worlding in 'Necropolis' (2017 onward)
With the Institut des Croisements, choreographer, dancer and curator Arkadi Zaides unfolds a continuing engagement in human rights issues. His research-based art practice thinks through the entanglement of politics and the ways bodies (are allowed to) move. In 2017, Zaides embarked on the long-term performance project Necropolis, considering the movements of people who are systematically and brutally stopped by border policies, highlighting the choreography that occurs in the social sphere. The performance project entails a documentary approach to the contemporary geopolitical reality of migration.
Rather than providing a coherent, consistent analysis of the performance Necropolis, this text testifies of a co-production of knowledge from within the research-based, long durational performance project of Necropolis, and its many off-springs, such as the NecropolisLAB and the continuously constituted virtual city of the dead called NECROPOLIS. Rather than writing “about” an art practice, this text came into being in collaboration with an art practice. As another process of knowledge production is at stake, this text is not single-authored, but rather presents a hybrid constellation of different voices from within the collaborative process itself
