Thus, the agro-morphological diversity of the banana collection of the National Center for Plantain Specialization (CNS-Plantain) composed of 42 accessions was analyzed based on 38 qualitative and quantitative variables according to the IPGRI-INIBHP descriptor. /CIRAD 1996. The results showed significant differences between the accessions in terms of morphology, production traits and yields. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical ascending classification (HAC) showed significant genetic variability and identify 5 groups of bananas in the collection. The French group (Group 1) and the ABB-type cooking banana group (Group 5) are characterized by a high number of hands (6 to 16), short and more fruits (53 to 192), therefore a bigger bunch with a long production cycle for the French. The False horn group (Group 3) has 4 to 8 hands with medium-sized and few fruits (14 to 57) and a shorter production cycle. The accessions of group 2 (Bâtard) have fruits of intermediate size and number between the French and the False horns. In the fourth group (True horns), the accessions are characterized by large and few fruits (7 to 20). Thus, this genetic diversity offers a great possibility of choice of genitors for the creation of improved varieties of plantain in Côte d'Ivoire

Caracterisation D’isolats Locaux De Metarhizium Spp, Champignon Entomopathogene De Cosmopolites Sordidus Germar, Isoles Des Bananeraies En Cote d’Ivoire
Chemical insecticides have been commonly used against the black weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus, in banana plantations which caused huge economic and agricultural losses. Despite their benefits, pesticides can be hazardous to both humans and the environment. Intensive research in substituting chemical insecticides with biological control agents have been driven. The biological and molecular characteristics of ten strains of Metarhizium spp, isolated from dead weevils, collected in banana plantation in Côte d'Ivoire were studied. The study aims to identify the species of Metarhizium sp. The biological and molecular characteristics namely: length and width of the spores, colour of aerial mycelium as well as its variation over time, colour on the setback of the box, production of the diffusible pigment and the analysis of the region ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) were evaluated. The colonies presented at first a flat white mycelium cottony or fluffy appearance on which the spores formed small islets. After 21 days of incubation at 32°C. in the dark, the mycelium takes on the periphery a greenish coloration with a powdery appearance. The relief is fairly flat. The spores are ellipsoid in shape of 3 μm in length and 1 μm. The amplification by ITS-DNA PCR generated a specific fragment of 550 bp. The analysis of the ITS region of the sequences of these ten (10) isolates showed maximal correspondence with different strains of M. anisopliae and Metarhizium pinghaense
The work herein reported has been conducted in the framework of the sustainable improvement of production of plantain and the food security strategy of the Côte d’Ivoire. In this perspective, the annual replanting of plantain orchards has been assessed as a tool for cultural management of plant-parasitic nematodes. The cultivar Horne 1 has been planted at high density (2500 plants/ha) in the framework of an off-season production system. Four treatments were applied: three continuous cycles with no nematicide application; three continuous cycles with applications of nematicide; annual replanting with nematicide applied and annual replanting with no nematicide application. Replanting was done at 0.8m from the bunch bearing-tree of the previous crop that was totally uprooted after harvest. In general, the populations of R. similis and P. coffeae were concentrated (80 %) within a radius of 50 cm around the bunch bearing-plantain. The lowest nematode infestations were recorded under annual planting replanting with or without nematicide treatments. In addition, yields remained high (P<0.05) during the second (35 t/ha) and third crops (30 t/ha) and were not statistically different from that of the first crop (35 t/ha). On the contrary, under successive crop cycles, yields declined by 41.4 and 63.5 % respectively during the second and third crop cycles. Compared to the classic plantain cultivation method, annual replanting has generated a gross margin of 64 % and 207 % during the second and third seasons. Finally, the replanted crop appears to be economically more profitable than the multi-year plantain crop
