Differences by union status in health and mortality at older ages: Results for 16 European countries
Background: Married people live longer than the unmarried; micro-level research indicates that they enjoy better health. Macro-level research does not combine mortality, marital status, and health.
Objective: We provide international comparisons of healthy and unhealthy life years at ages 50 and higher combining mortality, marital status, and health.
Methods: We examine differences in healthy and unhealthy life years for married and cohabiting (i.e., partnered) and for single men and women and break these down into mortality and disability. EU-SILC and Eurostat data for 2011 are used for 16 European countries.
Results: Our analyses show that partnered people, both men and women, are healthier than singles. However, these differences in unhealthy life are varied. For the length of healthy life, the effect of disability dominates the effect of mortality for women strongly and for men weakly, while the effect of mortality is more important for the length of unhealthy life of women. Populations in Eastern Europe are more disadvantaged than those in Western Europe with respect to length of life and of healthy life; these differences are larger for singles and lower for the partnered.
Contribution: We extend previous macro-level studies on healthy and unhealthy life at older ages by introducing the additional dimension of partner status. We provide rich information in terms of life expectancies for 16 countries in Europe, with special attention on Eastern European countries and specifically on singles in these countries

These six alkaloids are described for the first time from this plant.Mongolian Journal of Chemistry 16 (42), 2015, 44-4
Alkaloids from Mongolian species of Peganum multisectum (Maxim) Bobrov
Alkaloids of the aerial parts of P. multisectum (Maxim) Bobrov (Zygophyllaceae) growing in Mongolia have been studied by capillary Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Column Chromatography (CC). Four compounds comprising of 2-methylquinoline (1), 9-amino-2, 3,5,6,7,8-hexahydro-1H-cyclopenta [b] quinoline (2), vasicinone (3) and harmine (4) have been determined by GC-MS, while harmine (4), peganine (5), deoxypeganine (6), deoxyvasicinone (7) and harmane (8) were isolated as pure compounds by the CC. The structures of the five alkaloids 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 were elucidated by the MS and 1H and 13C NMR analysis. The alkaloids 1, 2 and 8 were identified for the first time from this species.Mongolian Journal of Chemistry 16 (42), 2015, 48-5
GC-MS analysis and antibacterial activity of some fractions from Lagochilus ilicifolius Bge. grown in Mongolia
3-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (1), 4-hydroxyisoquinoline (2), 4-(1E)-hydroxy-1-prophenyl)-2-methoxyphenol (3), 4-acetoxycinnamic acid (4), Songoramine (5), and Songorine (6) have been determined by GC-MS analysis from the crude alkaloid mixtures (G1) obtained from the aerial parts of Lagochilus ilicifolius Bge. grown in Mongolia and comparison of the measured data with those from the literature. The compounds 1-6 are described for the first time from L.ilicifolius. From these 3-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (1) was determined for the first time from natural plants. In addition, the antibacterial activity of fractions and total alkaloids were evaluated against Staphylococcus aurous, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli strains, respectively. The growth inhibition zones against gram-positive S.aureus, B.subtilis, B.cereus and gram negative E.coli, strains were observed. Positive results were achieved on 500 ÎŒg/disc concentration, but lower results or no active on 100 ÎŒg/disc concentration were for the plant extracts, fractions and total alkaloids.Mongolian Journal of Chemistry 16 (42), 2015, 39-4
Cystic Echinococcosis of the Breast - Diagnostic Dilemma or just a Rare Primary Localization
Introduction: Although the liver and lung are the most frequently affected organs in cystic echinococcosis, the cysts may develop in any viscera and tissues. Breast is a rare primary localization with few cases described in the literature. We present an updated and systematic review and discuss the possible mechanisms of spreading, diagnostic and treatment options.Materials and methods: We performed a literature search in PUBMED using the key words ‘hydatid disease’, ‘cystic echinococcosis’ and ‘breast echinococcosis’ without time limitation. Only studies reporting breast cystic echinococcosis were included. Results: Overall, 121 cases with cystic echinococcosis and 2 with alveolar echinococcosis were reported. A total of 52 cases were included in the analysis. The mean size of cysts was 5.5 cm (range 1.7-12). The most common clinical presentation was painless lump presented from 4 months to 19 years before the final diagnosis. Most cases had isolated breast CE, few cases had synchronous localizations – femoral, thigh and lung, and previous liver CE. Most were active CL and CE1-2 cysts (72%). Ultrasound was used in 83%, followed by mammography (35%). Fine needle aspiration was reported in 27 cases with positive finding in 59%.Conclusions: In cases with cystic breast lesions from endemic regions we recommend the US as a gold standard. CT and MRT are more accurate but expensive tools without the potential to change the surgical tactic. In contrast to the other localizations of CE, complete excision of the cysts is the best diagnostic and treatment approach
How are time-dependent childbearing intentions realized? Realization, postponement, abandonment, bringing forward
Our study aims to identify factors that facilitate or inhibit the realization of fertility intentions. The analysis uses data collected in the first two waves of a Hungarian longitudinal survey. Fertility intentions recorded at the first wave pertain to the subsequent 3-year period, just similar to the behavior variable measuring the realization of intentions, i.e., a birth within the 3-year period in question. For this analysis, we used the respondentsâ demographic, socio-structural, and orientational traits recorded at the first interview. Our findings show that age, parity, and partnership play a determining role in the realization of fertility intentions, but employment status, religious affiliation, and overall life satisfaction all exhibit significant effects. A marked gender difference was detected not only with regard to employment status but in the area of values and orientations as well.Lâobjectif de notre Ă©tude est dâidentifier les facteurs qui facilitent ou inhibent la rĂ©alisation des intentions de fĂ©conditĂ©.
Childbearing intentions in a low fertility context: the case of Romania
This paper applies the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to find out the predictors of fertility intentions in Romania, a low-fertility country. We analyse how attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control relate to the intention to have a child among childless individuals and one-child parents. Principal axis factor analysis confirms which items proposed by the Generation and Gender Survey (GGS 2005) act as valid and reliable measures of the suggested theoretical socio-psychological factors. Four parity-specific logistic regression models are applied to evaluate the relationship between the socio-psychological factors and childbearing intentions. Social pressure emerges as the most important aspect in fertility decision-making among childless individuals and one-child parents, and positive attitudes towards childbearing are a strong component in planning for a child. This paper also underlines the importance of the region-specific factors when studying childbearing intentions: planning for the second child significantly differs among the development regions, representing the cultural and socio-economic divisions of the Romanian territory
