    Periodicities in the Daily Proton Fluxes from 2011 to 2019 Measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station from 1 to 100 GV

    We present the precision measurement of the daily proton fluxes in cosmic rays from May 20, 2011 to October 29, 2019 (a total of 2824 days or 114 Bartels rotations) in the rigidity interval from 1 to 100 GV based on 5.5×109 protons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer aboard the International Space Station. The proton fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. From 2014 to 2018, we observed recurrent flux variations with a period of 27 days. Shorter periods of 9 days and 13.5 days are observed in 2016. The strength of all three periodicities changes with time and rigidity. The rigidity dependence of the 27-day periodicity is different from the rigidity dependences of 9-day and 13.5-day periods. Unexpectedly, the strength of 9-day and 13.5-day periodicities increases with increasing rigidities up to ∼10 GV and ∼20 GV, respectively. Then the strength of the periodicities decreases with increasing rigidity up to 100 GV.</p

    A Global Survey and Review of the Determinants of Transaction Costs of Forestry Carbon Projects

    Reducing carbon emissions in the forestry sector by means of market-based schemes is considered a cost-effective measure for tackling climate change impacts. However, the transaction costs (TCs) involved are typically unknown or unquantified and therefore often neglected. In this study three types of TCs (search, design and negotiation costs) were measured in person-days and monetary terms based on a global survey of forestry carbon projects implemented across Latin-America, Asia and Africa. Cost estimates vary between zero and 1.201/tCO2 for person-days and from zero to US$ 1.738/tCO2 for monetary costs. Key drivers of TCs are identified based on the characteristics of the project in general, the transaction, the transactors involved and institutional design. The latter type of characteristic is shown to have a particularly large impact on TCs

    Estrogen receptor cofactor motif interactions : interplay of tyrosine 537/488 phosphorylation and LXXLL motifs

    The Estrogen Receptors ERa and ERß bind cofactor proteins via short LXXLL motifs. The exact regulation and selectivity of these interactions remains an open question and the role of post-translational modifications (PTMs) is virtually unexplored. Here, we designed an X7–LXXLL–X7 T7 phage display library and screened this against four ER protein constructs: the ‘naked’ ERa and ERß Ligand Binding Domains (LBDs) and the tyrosine phosphorylated ERa (pY537) and ERß (pY488) LBDs. The site-selective tyrosine phosphorylated protein constructs were obtained via a protein semi-synthesis approach. Phage display screening yielded preferential sets of peptides. LXXLL peptides with a low pI/acidic C-terminus prefer binding to the naked ERß over the phosphorylated ERß analogue and ERa constructs. Peptides with a high pI/basic C-terminus show the opposite behaviour. These findings not only show regulation of the ERß–cofactor interaction via tyrosine phosphorylation, but also suggest that ERß and its tyrosine 488 phosphorylation play crucial roles in modulating interactions of coactivators to ERa since the natural Steroid Receptor Coactivators (SRCs) feature LXXLL motifs with acidic C-termini, while the repressor protein RIP140 features LXXLL motifs with basic C-termini. This insight provides explanation for ER transcriptional activity and can lead to more focussed targeting of the ER–coactivator interaction

    New insights into the effect of medium‐chain‐length lactones on yeast membranes. Importance of the culture medium

    International audienceIn hydrophobic compounds biotechnology, medium-chain-length metabolites often perturb cell activity. Their effect is usually studied in model conditions of growth in glucose media. Here, we study whether culture on lipids has an impact on the resistance of Yarrowia lipolytica to such compounds: Cells were cultured on glucose or oleate and submitted to gamma-dodecalactone. After a 60-min exposure to 3 g L(-1), about 80% of the glucose-grown cells (yeast extract peptone dextrose (YPD) cells) had lost their cultivability, 38% their membrane integrity, and 31% their reducing capacity as shown with propidium iodide and methylene blue, respectively. For oleate-grown cells, treatment at 6 g L(-1) did not alter cultivability despite some transient loss of membrane integrity from 3 g L(-1). It was shown with diphenylhexatriene and 1-(4-trimethylammoniumphenyl)-6-phenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene that oleate-grown cells had membranes more fluid and less sensitive to the lactone-induced fluidization. Analyses revealed also higher contents of ergosterol but, for YPD- and minimum-oleate-grown cells (YNBO cells), the addition of lactone provoked a decrease in the concentration of ergosterol in a way similar to the depletion by methyl-beta-cyclodextrin and an important membrane fluidization. Ergosterol depletion or incorporation increased or decreased, respectively, cell sensitivity to lactone. This study shows that the embedment of oleate moieties into membranes as well as higher concentrations of sterol play a role in the higher resistance to lactone of oleate-grown cells (YPO cells). Similar oleate-induced increase in resistance was also observed for Rhodotorula and Candida strains able to grow on oleate as the sole carbon source whereas Saccharomyces and Sporidiobolus cells were more sensitive after induction
