Cash holding, state ownership and firm value: The case of Vietnam

    Get PDF
Using a sample of 650 listed firms on the Vietnamese stock exchange over the period 2008-2015, we examine the effect of cash holding level on firm value. The results find out the cash holding has an impact on firm value in an inverted U-shaped form. Furthermore, this study investigates whether the state ownership influences firm value. We point out that there is a statistically insignificant positive relationship between state ownership and firm value unless the state ownership’s advantages are utilized. The findings have implications of cash management in state-owned firms. © 2016, Econjournals. All rights reserved

EVALUATION OF SOLAR RADIATION ESTIMATED FROM HIMAWARI-8 SATELLITE OVER VIETNAM REGION

The development of Solar energy system is growing rapidly in Vietnam in recent years by encouragement of the Government in renewable energy. Requirement for accurate knowledge of the solar radiation reaching the surface is increasingly important in the successful deployment of Solar photovoltaic plants. However, measurements of different components of solar resources including direct normal irradiance (DNI) and global horizontal irradiance (GHI) are limited to few stations over whole country. Satellite imagery provides an ability to monitor the surface radiation over large areas at high spatial and temporal resolution as alternatives at low cost. Observations from the new Japanese geostationary satellite Himawari-8 produce imagery covering Asia-Pacific region, permitting estimation of GHI and DNI over Vietnam at 10-minute temporal resolution. However, accurate comparisons with ground observations are essential to assess their uncertainty. In this study, we evaluated the Himawari-8 radiation product AMATERASS provided by JST/CREST TEEDDA using observations recorded at 5 stations in different regions of Vietnam. The result shows good agreement between satellite estimation and observed data with high correlation of range 0.92-0.94, but better in clear-sky episodes.Because of AMATERASS outperform, we used it for validating ERA-Interim reanalysis in the spatial scale. The comparison was made dividedly for 7 climate zones and 4 seasons. The conclusion is that ERA-Interim is also well associated with satellite-based estimates in seasonal trend for all season, but in average the reanalysis has negative bias towards satellite estimates. This underestimation is more pronounced in the months of JJA and SON periods and in the north part of Vietnam because of unpredicted cloud in the ERA reanalysis

Straightforward Procedure for Laboratory Production of DNA Ladder

    Get PDF
DNA ladder is commonly used to determine the size of DNA fragments by electrophoresis in routine molecular biology laboratories. In this study, we report a new procedure to prepare a DNA ladder that consists of 10 fragments from 100 to 1000 bp. This protocol is a combination of routinely employed methods: cloning, PCR, and partial digestion with restriction enzymes. DNA fragments of 100 bp with unique restriction site at both ends were self-ligated to create a tandem repeat. Once being cloned, the tandem repeat was rapidly amplified by PCR and partially digested by restriction enzymes to produce a ladder containing multimers of the repeated DNA fragments. Our procedure for production of DNA ladder could be simple, time saving, and inexpensive in comparison with current ones widely used in most laboratories

Nutraceutical Properties of Legume Seeds: Phytochemical Compounds

    Get PDF
Legume seeds have an important role as nutraceuticals in human health (providing protein, carbohydrates, fiber, amino acids, and micronutrients) and act as sustainable food sources in livestock farming and aquaculture. Legume seeds contain a wide range of bioactive compounds that have significant health benefits, mainly classified under phenolic compounds, phytosterols, oligosaccharides, carbohydrates, and saponins. Some of these compounds play an important role in plant defense mechanisms against predators and environmental conditions. Heat-labile antinutritional factors (protease inhibitors and lectins) and heat-stable antinutritional factors (tannins and phytic acid) can be reduced by thermal treatment or postharvest to eliminate any potential negative effects from consumption. Substantial studies have demonstrated that these bioactive compounds possess multiple biological activities, including antioxidant properties, antibacterial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, cardiovascular protective. They also have various values for aquaculture, such as fishmeal alternative. In this review, the main bioactive compounds and important biological functions of legume seeds are summarized, and the mechanism of action is discussed

Study on pathogenicity of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides on Coffee in North of Vietnam

Coffee is an important crop in Vietnam and it has recently brought a lot of benefit for the country through export. After coffee leaf rust, anthracnose is the second destructive disease for coffee production and is caused primarily by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. In order to investigate the pathogenicity of C. gloeosporioides on coffee in the North of Vietnam, we carried out isolation of C. gloeosporioides species from different coffee plantations and found that C. gloeosporioides presents in different parts of coffee including leaf, twig, ripe berry and green berry. The pathogenicity of a total of twenty eight C. gloeosporioides isolates was tested on green berry in laboratory. Interestingly, two most pathogenic isolates were originated from green berry. In detail, the rate of green berry infection by C. gloeosporioides isolates varied from 4.44% to 76.67% and the variation of infection rate was also observed clearly among C. gloeosporioides isolates originating from leaf (14.40% to 45.56%), twig (4.44% to 58.89%), ripe berry (22.20% to 61.10%) and green berry (24.40% to 76.67%). Three selected pathogenic isolates representing for C. gloeosporioides isolates originated from twig, ripe berry and green berry were further tested for pathogenicity on hypocotyl seedling in greenhouse. The rate of hypocotyl seedling infection by C. gloeosporioides isolates originated from twig, green berry and ripe berry is 48.89%, 37.78 and 23.33% respectively. Our data suggests that pathogenicity of C. gloeosporioides is variable and specific among isolates, parts of coffee

Attention correlated appearance and motion feature followed temporal learning for activity recognition

    Get PDF
Recent advances in deep neural networks have been successfully demonstrated with fairly good accuracy for multi-class activity identification. However, existing methods have limitations in achieving complex spatial-temporal dependencies. In this work, we design two stream fusion attention (2SFA) connected to a temporal bidirectional gated recurrent unit (GRU) one-layer model and classified by prediction voting classifier (PVC) to recognize the action in a video. Particularly in the proposed deep neural network (DNN), we present 2SFA for capturing appearance information from red green blue (RGB) and motion from optical flow, where both streams are correlated by proposed fusion attention (FA) as the input of a temporal network. On the other hand, the temporal network with a bi-directional temporal layer using a GRU single layer is preferred for temporal understanding because it yields practical merits against six topologies of temporal networks in the UCF101 dataset. Meanwhile, the new proposed classifier scheme called PVC employs multiple nearest class mean (NCM) and the SoftMax function to yield multiple features outputted from temporal networks, and then votes their properties for high-performance classifications. The experiments achieve the best average accuracy of 70.8% in HMDB51 and 91.9%, the second best in UCF101 in terms of 2DConvNet for action recognition

A model of mother tongue-based bilingual education in Vietnam: Achievements and lessons learnt

    Get PDF
This articlesummarizes findings from the implementation of the mother tongue-based bilingual education model and the tracer study on the students who participated in the mother tongue-based bilingual education program at preschool and primary schools and transitioned to higher levels of education in the framework of the UNICEFfunded "Learning for children" project. The research team would like to thank UNICEF Viet Nam,the Vietnam National Institute of Educational Sciences, Departments of Education and Training of Lao Cai, Gia Lai and Tra Vinh provinces, and educational managers, teachers and students in the three provinces for their support and cooperation.Education practices in ethnic minority areas in Vietnam with regional and ethnic differences influence its educational development. In particular, the language difference is a factor because the language used in teaching and learning is Vietnamese, not the mother tongue. Therefore, the mother tonguebased bilingual education model was developed to provide quick and convenient access to Vietnamese (the nation’s official language) and knowledge for students in ethnic minority areas. Its approach is to use the ethnic students’ mother tongues as the initial foundation in their first schooling years. The outstanding results of the successfully tested model have contributed to the improvement of the quality of ethnic minority education in Vietnam
