    Just Because We Can Doesn’t Mean We Should: On Knowing and Protecting Data Produced by the Jewish Consumptives’ Relief Society

    A recent project at the University of Denver Libraries used handwritten text recognition (HTR) software to create transcriptions of records from the Jewish Consumptives’ Relief Society (JCRS), a tuberculosis sanatorium located in Denver, Colorado from 1904 to 1954. Among a great many other potential uses, these type- and hand-written records give insight into the human experience of disease and epidemic, its treatment, its effect on cultures, and of Jewish immigration to and early life in the American West. Our intent is to provide these transcripts as data so the text may be computationally analyzed, pursuant to a larger effort in developing capacity in services and infrastructure to support digital humanities as a library, and to contribute to the emerging HTR ecosystem in archival work.Just because we can, however, doesn’t always mean we should: the realities of publishing large datasets online that contain medical and personal histories of potentially vulnerable people and communities introduce serious ethical considerations. This paper both underscores the value of HTR and frames ethical considerations related to protecting data derived from it. It suggests a terms-of-use intervention perhaps valuable to similar projects, one that balances meeting the research needs of digital scholars with the care and respect of persons, their communities and inheritors, who lives produced the very data now valuable to those researchers

    Q: Are SERMs safe and effective for the treatment of hypogonadism in men? Evidence-based answer: YES. For both normal-weight and obese men with low testosterone levels and hypogonadal symptoms, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), such as clomiphene citrate (CC) and enclomiphene citrate (EC), appear to be effective and safe for improving serum testosterone levels (strength of recommendation [SOR]: C, disease-oriented outcomes from randomized controlled trials [RCTs] and cohort studies).     A Vertical Cooperation Model to Manage Digital Collections and Institutional Resources

    The technology space of the University of Denver Libraries to manage digital collections and institutional resources isn’t relegated to one department on campus – rather, it distributed across a network of collaborators with the skills and expertise to provide that support. The infrastructure, which is comprised of an archival metadata management system (Archivespace), a digital repository (Node.js + ElasticSearch), preservation storage (ArchivesDirect), and a streaming server (Kaltura) is independently but cooperatively managed across IT, library departments and vendors. The coordinated eort of digital curation activities still allows each group to focus on the service they have the most vested interest in providing. This paper will talk about the different management and development practices involved in developing our integrated infrastructure to provide digital collections as a service

    Neutrinos in 5D SO(10) Unification

    We study neutrino physics in a 5D supersymmetric SO(10) GUT. We analyze several different choices for realizing the See-Saw mechanism. We find that the "natural" scale for the Majorana mass of right-handed neutrinos depends critically on whether the right-handed neutrinos are located in the bulk or localized on a brane. In the former case, the effective Majorana mass is "naturally" of order the compactification scale, about 10^{14} GeV. Note, this is the value necessary for obtaining a light tau neutrino mass approximately 10^{-2} eV which, within the context of hierarchical neutrino masses, is the right order of magnitude to explain atmospheric neutrino oscillations. On the other-hand when the right-handed neutrino is localized on the brane, the effective Majorana mass is typically larger than the compactification scale. Nevertheless with small parameters of order 1/10 - 1/30, an effective Majorana mass of order 10^{14} GeV can be accommodated.     Alcohol Use, Risk Taking, Leisure Activities and Health Care Use Among Young People in Northern Vietnam

    Alcohol consumption is associated with a wide range of health and social consequences. It is also associated with a number of risk taking behaviours. These include illicit drug use and unsafe sex.  Alcohol consumption appears to be increasing in Vietnam. The purpose of this paper is to examine the patterns of alcohol consumption and its relationship with a number of other risk taking behaviours amongst young people.  Information was also obtained concerning leisure activities and use of health care. The paper also sets out to examine possible gender differences in relation to alcohol consumption and risk behaviour and to propose the development and implementation of alcohol monitoring and prevention programs in Vietnam.  The study involved a cross-sectional, community survey using a standardised interview.  This was conducted during face-to-face interviews with 1,408 young people aged 10-19 years.  Respondents were recruited randomly through the lists of the households from 12 selected communes in three areas in Northern Vietnam. The findings presented here were part of a larger health risk behaviour survey.  Levels of alcohol use were low. Overall, 16.5% of participants were experienced drinkers, and only 4% of them were current drinkers. Males were significantly more likely than females to report drinking. This study also showed that rates of alcohol consumption were associated with age, education, geographical area, gender, tobacco smoking, involvement in violence, watching television, computer use and playing computer games, wearing safety helmets and use of health services. Alcohol consumption tended to increase with age for both males and females.  Alcohol and its effects on young people are clearly a growing public health issue in Vietnam.  Because of this, more detailed behavioral research should be conducted into the relationship between alcohol consumption and other risky behaviours amongst young people.  It is also recommended that alcohol harm reduction policies should be implemented and integrated into measures to reduce levels of other health problems such as HIV/AIDS and non communicable diseases. Such policies should ideally be evidence-based and evaluated

    Pendrin is a Cl-/HCO3- exchanger expressed in the apical regions of renal intercalated cells. Following pendrin gene ablation, blood pressure falls, in part, from reduced renal NaCl absorption. We asked if pendrin is expressed in vascular tissue and if the lower blood pressure observed in pendrin null mice is accompanied by reduced vascular reactivity. Thus, the contractile responses to KCl and phenylephrine (PE) were examined in isometrically mounted thoracic aortas from wild-type and pendrin null mice. Although pendrin expression was not detected in the aorta, pendrin gene ablation changed contractile protein abundance and increased the maximal contractile response to PE when normalized to cross sectional area (CSA). However, the contractile sensitivity to this agent was unchanged. The increase in contractile force/cross sectional area observed in pendrin null mice was due to reduced cross sectional area of the aorta and not from increased contractile force per vessel. The pendrin-dependent increase in maximal contractile response was endothelium- and nitric oxide-independent and did not occur from changes in Ca2+ sensitivity or chronic changes in catecholamine production. However, application of 100 nM angiotensin II increased force/CSA more in aortas from pendrin null than from wild type mice. Moreover, angiotensin type 1 receptor inhibitor (candesartan) treatment in vivo eliminated the pendrin-dependent changes contractile protein abundance and changes in the contractile force/cross sectional area in response to PE. In conclusion, pendrin gene ablation increases aorta contractile force per cross sectional area in response to angiotensin II and PE due to stimulation of angiotensin type 1 receptor-dependent signaling. The angiotensin type 1 receptor-dependent increase in vascular reactivity may mitigate the fall in blood pressure observed with pendrin gene ablation

    Dynamical Properties of the 1/r^2-Type Supersymmetric t-J Model in a Magnetic Field: Manifestation of Spin-Charge Separation

    Quasi-particle picture in a magnetic field is pursued for dynamical spin and charge correlation functions of the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with inverse-square interaction. With use of exact diagonalization and the asymptotic Bethe-ansatz equations for finite systems, excitation contents of relevant excited states are identified which are valid in the thermodynamic limit. The excitation contents are composed of spinons, antispinons, holons and antiholons obeying fractional statistics. Both longitudinal and transverse components of the dynamical spin structure factor are independent of the electron density in the region where only quasi-particles with spin degrees of freedom (spinons and antispinons) contribute. The dynamical charge structure factor does not depend on the spin-polarization density in the region where only quasi-particles with charge (holons and antiholons) are excited. These features indicate the strong spin-charge separation in dynamics, reflecting the high symmetry of the model.Comment: 10 pages, 1 table (PS file), 15 figures (JPEG file). Submitted to J. Phys.     Correlated Terahertz phonon-ion interactions dominate ion conduction in solid electrolyte Li0.5La0.5TiO3

    Ionic conduction in solids that exceeds 0.01 S/cm is predicted to involve collective phonon-ion interactions in the crystal lattice. Here, we use theory and experiment to measure the contribution of possible collective phonon-ion modes to Li+ migration in Li0.5La0.5TiO3. The ab initio calculations reveal that only a few phonon modes, mostly TiO6 rocking modes below 6 Terahertz, provide over 40% of the energy required for the Li+ hop in Li0.5La0.5TiO3. Laser-driving the TiO6 rocking modes decreases the measured impedance ten-fold compared to exciting acoustic and optical phonons at similar energy densities. The decreased impedance persists on thermalization timescales. These findings provide new insights on phonon-coupled ion migration mechanisms, material design rules, and the potential for metastable states for opto-ionic materials

    Improvement of catalytic performance of lignin peroxidase for the enhanced degradation of lignocellulose biomass based on the imbedded electron-relay in long-range electron transfer route

    Background: Although lignin peroxidase is claimed as a key enzyme in enzyme-catalyzed lignin degradation, in vitro enzymatic degradation of lignin was not easily observed in lab-scale experiments. It implies that other factors may hinder the enzymatic degradation of lignin. Irreversible interaction between phenolic compound and lignin peroxidase was hypothesized when active enzyme could not be recovered after the reaction with degradation product (guaiacol) of lignin phenolic dimer. Results: In the study of lignin peroxidase isozyme H8 from white-rot fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporium (LiPH8), W251 site was revealed to make the covalent coupling with one moiety of monolignolic radical (guaiacol radical) by LC-MS/MS analysis. Hypothetical electron-relay containing W251 residue was newly suggested based on the observation of repressed radical coupling and remarkably lower electron transfer rate for W215A mutant. Furthermore, the retardation of the suicidal radical coupling between the W251 residue and the monolignolic radical was attempted by supplementing the acidic microenvironment around the W251 residue to engineer radical-robust LiPH8. Among many mutants, mutant A242D showed exceptional catalytic performances by yielding 21.1- and 4.9-fold higher increases of k(cat) and k(cat)/K-M values, respectively, in the oxidation of non-phenolic model lignin dimer. Conclusions: A mechanism-based suicide inhibition of LiPH8 by phenolic compounds was firstly revealed and investigated in this work. Radical-robust LiPH8 was also successfully engineered by manipulating the transient radical state of radical-susceptible electron-relay. Radical-robust LiPH8 will play an essential role in degradation of lignin, which will be consequently linked with improved production of sugars from lignocellulose biomass.open
