Access and Equity for African American Students in Higher Education: A Critical Race Historical Analysis of Policy Efforts

    Get PDF
Policies that have affected enrollments and degree attainment rates for African American students throughout the lifespan of higher education are analyzed in this article. Historically noteworthy progressive steps toward access and equity are juxtaposed with recent indicators of regression. Critical Race Theory is employed as an analytical framework for understanding how white supremacy and racist ideologies have shaped and undermined various policy efforts

Climate Change: Coping Strategies For A Sustainable Future In India

Today, human race faces many threats but none is greater than the climate challenge. I quote Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of UN, “ climate change does not respect borders; it does not respect who you are-rich and, the poor, small and big. Therefore, this is what we call ‘ global challenges’ which require global solidarity”-co-operation and collaboration among all people and all governments of the world. Our globe, is a world of looming climate challenges. Climate change is happening here and happening now. Hence, human beings should not become architects of their own destruction. With the available knowledge and tools, it is essential to reduce global warming in terms of the mitigation and adaptation strategies. Therefore, this paper delineates various climate change coping strategies followed all over the world with a detailed description of measures formulated and adopted in India

    Climate Resilient Green Economy: Prospects

    Get PDF
A new political climate has grown in many countries around the world, thanks to the strong base in science and widening public awareness of climate change and its risks. Clean energy revolution has been taking place all over the developed countries, underscored by the steady expansion of the renewable energy sector. The adoption of Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) constituted a win-win situation, as renewable is not only green and job-generating, but also sustainable with a higher environmental benefit. Renewable fuels such as wind, solar, biomass, tides, and geothermal are inexhaustible, indigenous and are often free as a resource. They just need to be captured efficiently and transformed into electricity, hydrogen or clean transportation fuels. The renewable energy sources have hardly any carbon footprint and are environment-friendly and do not require environmentally-damaging mining and transport. The paper highlights various sources of clean energy in the context of sustainable economic, environmental, and social development besides focusing on the importance of renewable energy in the modern world

Evaluating Scenarios That Can Startle and Surprise Pilots

Startle and surprise in the cockpit have contributed to multiple aviation accidents. The aviation safety boards of France, the United States, and Holland have concluded that startle and surprise pose a serious threat to pilots. This study identified the effects startle and surprise had on multi-engine rated pilots. Surprise is defined here as something unexpected (e.g., engine failure). Startle is the associated exaggerated effect of an unexpected condition (e.g., loud bang). At this point, data has been collected on 15 pilots. Pilots were tested in an aviation training device configured to a Cessna 172 and a Beechcraft Baron 58. Each pilot flew the single and multi-engine aircraft in a scenario that induced an informed emergency condition, a surprise uninformed emergency condition, and a startle and surprise uninformed emergency condition for each aircraft. During each condition heart and respiration rate, flight performance, and workload were collected. The startle and surprise condition showed highest respiration for both planes. However, there was no difference for heart rate between the two aircraft for the informed condition, but heart rate was highest in the startle and surprise condition for the twin-engine aircraft when compared to the single-engine aircraft. The temporal demand workload was higher for the twin-engine when compared to the single-engine for the surprise condition only. Performance differences were found, which we think will show significance differences after more data is collected. Potential application of this study will help us understand how pilots will react in various unexpected conditions of different aircraft

Psychometric Assessment of the PPDG: Utilizing Cronbach’s Alpha as a Means of Reliability

Introduction: Since the development of the 10 item Purdue Pharmacist Directive Guidance (PPDG) Scale several studies of the psychometric properties of the PPDG have been conducted. Although Cronbach’s alpha was calculated as a means of internal consistency reliability, a demonstration of the mean centering of the individual items from the instrument were not explored. Objectives: This study focused on investigating the mean stabilization of items within the PPDG as they pertain to Cronbach’s reliability coefficient calculation. Methods:Using item analysis procedures in SPSS, the mean stability of items within the general factor of directive guidance and subscales of instruction and feedback and goal setting were examined for the PPDG.Results:Mean stability scores for entire PPDG scale and the subscales of instruction and feedback and goal setting were strong. Also, corrected item-total correlations and Cronbach’s alphas following item deletion were good for the overall PPDG scale and the subscales. Conclusions: The results provide evidence to enhance understanding of the psychometric stability of the PPDG scale and its subscales

Effect of In-water SCUBA Diving Activities on Response Time in Recreational Divers

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the performance of in-water scuba diving training activities and simple motor response time. Twenty-four students enrolled in a scuba course had their motor response times measured before and after a one hour training session. Pre- and post-dive response times were measured using an iPad application. Additionally, students were asked to complete a dive history questionnaire to determine their diving experience and health history. Statistical analysis indicated a significant training effect on response time in the recreational scuba divers F (1.00, 23.00) p =.033. The results of this study suggest that basic in-water scuba training activities may improve one\u27s ability to elicit quicker movement responses and lead to faster cognitive processing

A Pioneering University-Airline Flight Internship Program: A Follow-Up Study of Intern Participants

    Get PDF
This article presents the results of a follow-up survey administered to 110 former university interns who served a semester long internship in the fight operations department at United Airlines. The intent of the survey was to discover if the purposes of the internship had been fulfilled. Also, the survey gathered information on the characteristics of the internship participants in terms of their current employment in the aviation industry with the goal of discovering, among other things, how many of the interns were ultimately hired by United Airlines. A total of 78 of the 110 interns surveyed returned a completed survey. The results indicated that over half (41 of 78) of the respondents had, indeed, been hired in a pilot position by a major airline with the vast majority of these (36 or 41 hired by a major) hired by United Airlines. Of those not hired by United Airlines, only two are no longer in aviation while the rest are employed at other major airlines, regional airlines, corporate flight departments or in some part of general aviation such as flight instruction
