    An EEG study on emotional intelligence and advertising message effectiveness

    Some electroencephalography (EEG) studies have investigated emotional intelligence (EI), but none have examined the relationships between EI and commercial advertising messages and related consumer behaviors. This study combines brain (EEG) techniques with an EI psychometric to explore the brain responses associated with a range of advertisements. A group of 45 participants (23females, 22males) had their EEG recorded while watching a series of advertisements selected from various marketing categories such as community interests, celebrities, food/drink, and social issues. Participants were also categorized as high or low in emotional intelligence (n = 34). The EEG data analysis was centered on rating decision-making in order to measure brain responses associated with advertising information processing for both groups. The ļ¬ndings suggest that participants with high and low emotional intelligence (EI) were attentive to diļ¬€erent types of advertising messages. The two EI groups demonstrated preferences for ā€œpeopleā€ or ā€œobject,ā€ related advertising information. This suggests that diļ¬€erences in consumer perception and emotions may suggest why certain advertising material or marketing strategies are eļ¬€ective or not

    Since approximately February of 1979, the Speed School impulse clock system has not functioned due to a worn-out master clock that was never replaced because of a lack of fund. For this thesis project, a solid-state master clock that performs the same functions as the old mechanical master clock was built for less than $200. The new clock features accuracy traceable to the National Bureau of Standards, automatic reset after a power-down and subsequent power-up, and a daylight savings time provision. A decoder that recovers time information broadcast by radio station WWV from Fort Collins, Colorado was built and interfaced to the master clock to provide the accuracy traceable to the National Bureau of Standards

    Odontoblast TRPC5 channels signal cold pain in teeth

    Teeth are composed of many tissues, covered by an inflexible and obdurate enamel. Unlike most other tissues, teeth become extremely cold sensitive when inflamed. The mechanisms of this cold sensation are not understood. Here, we clarify the molecular and cellular components of the dental cold sensing system and show that sensory transduction of cold stimuli in teeth requires odontoblasts. TRPC5 is a cold sensor in healthy teeth and, with TRPA1, is sufficient for cold sensing. The odontoblast appears as the direct site of TRPC5 cold transduction and provides a mechanism for prolonged cold sensing via TRPC5\u27s relative sensitivity to intracellular calcium and lack of desensitization. Our data provide concrete functional evidence that equipping odontoblasts with the cold-sensor TRPC5 expands traditional odontoblast functions and renders it a previously unknown integral cellular component of the dental cold sensing system

    A Cultured Learning Environment: Implementing a Problem- and Service-Based Microbiology Capstone Course to Assess Process- and Skill-Based Learning Objectives

    In this study, a problem-based capstone course was designed to assess the University of Wyoming Microbiology Programā€™s skill-based and process-based student learning objectives. Students partnered with a local farm, a community garden, and a free downtown clinic in order to conceptualize, propose, perform, and present studies addressing problems experienced by these partners. Instructor assessments enabled understanding of student competencies, and according to external subject matter experts students demonstrated mastery of all learning objectives on the final research presentation. Community partners were completely satisfied with the studentsā€™ solutions, professionalism, and communication. Instructional diagnosis and student course evaluations showed satisfaction, engagement, and growth. Assessments enabled reflective practice by faculty and led to improvements of the capstone course and the microbiology program. Consequently, the course gained institutional support and an official course listing

    STATIC TESTS ON COLLAPSING GUARDRAIL DESIGNS

    A modified turned-down guardrail terminal which uses retrofit clips to hold up the guardrail has been in use on Nebraska Highways for several years. During this time, the Nebraska Department of Roads has become aware of a problem with this design. After being exposed to temperature fluctuations and vibrations from passing traffic the retrofit clips expand and the guardrail drops to the ground. Twelve different designs were tested on an actual guardrail field installation and a design consisting of strategically placed shear bolts was recommended

    To reduce the tendency for high center of mass vehicles to roll or vault over a guardrail barrier or dive under it, the guardrail barrier has outer curved portions selected to adjust the moment of inertia of the guardrail barrier by providing a sufficiently high moment of inertia to slow the vehicle but sufficiently low to avoid excessive force against the occupant compartment.
