Dynamic Gestures Recognition through a Low-cost Data Glove

    No full text
This paper presents some results towards the realization of a commercial wearable device for sign language translation. In particular, we propose an entire workflow for recognizing dynamic gestures. Different techniques are analysed and compared, both to realize a database of gestures' features and to classify a performed gesture. We test the proposed method on dataset of 10 dynamic gestures, acquiring data of two IMUs embedded in a data-glove. Different classifiers achieve a 100% of accuracy, using spline fitting as feature extraction technique

Improvements in a Wearable Device for Sign Language Translation

    No full text
Nowadays a commercial product for sign language translation is still not available. This paper presents our latest results towards this goal, presenting a functional prototype called Talking Hands. Talking Hands uses a data-glove to detect the hand movements of the user, and a smartphone application to gather all the data and translates them into voice, using a speech synthesizer. Talking Hands implements the most suitable solutions for a massive production without penalizing its reliability. This paper presents the improvements of the last prototype in terms of hardware, software and design, together with a preliminary analysis for the translation of dynamic gestures through this device

    Lung cancer in the young

    No full text
A long-term retrospective study was carried out on 1,514 cases of lung cancer to assess whether the disease presents substantial differences in young as compared to older patients. Clinical, epidemiologic, surgical, and survival data were evaluated in all cases. A young group under 45 years of age was studied separately and compared with the remaining older patients. In contrast with the literature, our results showed no percentage increase or variation in the male/female ratio of lung cancer in the young group. No significant difference was found regarding clinical picture, operability, histotype, and prognosis
