Theory of monolayers with boundaries: Exact results and Perturbative analysis
Domains and bubbles in tilted phases of Langmuir monolayers contain a class
of textures knows as boojums. The boundaries of such domains and bubbles may
display either cusp-like features or indentations. We derive analytic
expressions for the textures within domains and surrounding bubbles, and for
the shapes of the boundaries of these regions. The derivation is perturbative
in the deviation of the bounding curve from a circle. This method is not
expected to be accurate when the boundary suffers large distortions, but it
does provide important clues with regard to the influence of various energetic
terms on the order-parameter texture and the shape of the domain or bubble
bounding curve. We also look into the effects of thermal fluctuations, which

Polar Smectic Films
We report on a new experimental procedure for forming and studying polar
smectic liquid crystal films. A free standing smectic film is put in contact
with a liquid drop, so that the film has one liquid crystal/liquid interface
and one liquid crystal/air interface. This polar environment results in changes
in the textures observed in the film, including a boojum texture and a
previously unobserved spiral texture in which the winding direction of the
spiral reverses at a finite radius from its center. Some aspects of these
textures are explained by the presence of a Ksb term in the bulk elastic free

Topological Defects and Interactions in Nematic Emulsions
Inverse nematic emulsions in which surfactant-coated water droplets are
dispersed in a nematic host fluid have distinctive properties that set them
apart from dispersions of two isotropic fluids or of nematic droplets in an
isotropic fluid. We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the
distortions produced in the nematic host by the dispersed droplets and of
solvent mediated dipolar interactions between droplets that lead to their
experimentally observed chaining. A single droplet in a nematic host acts like
a macroscopic hedgehog defect. Global boundary conditions force the nucleation
of compensating topological defects in the nematic host. Using variational
techniques, we show that in the lowest energy configuration, a single water
droplet draws a single hedgehog out of the nematic host to form a tightly bound
dipole. Configurations in which the water droplet is encircled by a
disclination ring have higher energy. The droplet-dipole induces distortions in
the nematic host that lead to an effective dipole-dipole interaction between

Topological Defects in Nematic Droplets of Hard Spherocylinders
Using computer simulations we investigate the microscopic structure of the
singular director field within a nematic droplet. As a theoretical model for
nematic liquid crystals we take hard spherocylinders. To induce an overall
topological charge, the particles are either confined to a two-dimensional
circular cavity with homeotropic boundary or to the surface of a
three-dimensional sphere. Both systems exhibit half-integer topological point
defects. The isotropic defect core has a radius of the order of one particle
length and is surrounded by free-standing density oscillations. The effective
interaction between two defects is investigated. All results should be
