Effect of insulin glargine on cardiovascular risk analysed by mean HRV
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is an insidious disease that is increasingly present in geriatric population [1]. The greatest difficulty is represented by glycaemic control in geriatric patients often not very compliant with diet therapy and drug therapy. A new insulin glargine 300 units/ml formulation seems im- prove patient compliance due to the lower volume of insulin to be injected and improved glycaemic control over 24 hours. The HRV signal, derived from digital electrocardiographic recording, is the simplest and most imme- diate analysis that consists in calculating some temporal parameters [2]. HRV is a simple statistics derived from beat-beat intervals of sinus origin expressed as units of time in milliseconds. Data in the literature indicate that a decrease in HRV, measured with time domain analysis, denotes a worse prognosis and/or an increased risk of mortality in patients with heart disease, especially in the elderly ones
Effect of Ferric Sodium EDTA administration, in combination with vitamin C, folic acid, copper gluconate, zinc gluconate and selenomethionine, on cardiovascular risk evaluation: exploration of the HRV frequency domain
diseases. Using the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis is possible to provide an evaluation of the safety and the
effectiveness of intervention.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ferric Sodium EDTA in combination with vitamin C, folic acid, copper
gluconate, zinc gluconate and selenomethionine (Ferachel forte®) 2 tabs/day for 24 days in elderly patients with secondary
anaemia, by exploring the HRV frequency domain.
Methods: In 45 elderly patients with secondary anaemia and/or low-moderate kidney failure, laboratory values after
administration of Ferric Sodium EDTA, 2 tabs a day, in combination with vitamin C, folic acid, copper gluconate, zinc
gluconate and selenomethionine (Ferachel forte®) for 24 days (N=16 patients) or ferrous gluconate 63 mg/day added to
saline solution, administered using intravenous access during the hospitalization period of 15 ± 5 days (N=29 patients)
were evaluated. Also, ECG signals and bioelectrical impedance (BIA) were measured.
Results: Oral iron supplementation with Ferric Sodium EDTA, in combination with vitamin C, folic acid, copper gluconate,
zinc gluconate and selenomethionine (Ferachel forte®) confirmed to be effective and safe about the cardiovascular risk
in old patients. This study showed the real superiority of the oral administration about the cardiovascular risk in elderly
patients in comparison with intravenous administration of ferrous gluconate.
Conclusion: This study confirms that Ferric Sodium EDTA combination (Ferachel forte®) can be a valid alternative to ferrous
gluconate intravenous therapy (gold standard) in the treatment of secondary anaemia in elderly patients. In fact, during
the treatment, efficacy results have been maintained without statistically significant variations about cardiovascular risk,
evaluated by exploring the HRV frequency domain
The oleic acid-ozone heterogeneous reaction system: products, kinetics, secondary chemistry, and atmospheric implications of a model system ? a review
International audienceThe heterogeneous processing of organic aerosols by trace oxidants has many implications to atmospheric chemistry and climate regulation. This review covers a model heterogeneous reaction system (HRS): the oleic acid-ozone HRS and other reaction systems featuring fatty acids, and their derivatives. The analysis of the commonly observed aldehyde and organic acid products of ozonolysis (azelaic acid, nonanoic acid, 9-oxononanoic acid, nonanal) is described. The relative product yields are noted and explained by the observation of secondary chemical reactions. The secondary reaction products arising from reactive Criegee intermediates are mainly peroxidic, notably secondary ozonides and ?-acyloxyalkyl hydroperoxide oligomers and polymers, and their formation is in accord with solution and liquid-phase ozonolysis. These highly oxygenated products are of low volatility and hydrophilic which may enhance the ability of particles to act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). The kinetic description of this HRS is critically reviewed. Most kinetic studies suggest this oxidative processing is either a near surface reaction that is limited by the diffusion of ozone or a surface based reaction. Internally mixed particles and coatings represent the next stage in the progression towards more realistic proxies of tropospheric organic aerosols and a description of the products and the kinetics resulting from the ozonolysis of these proxies, which are based on fatty acids or their derivatives, is presented. Finally, the main atmospheric implications of oxidative processing of particulate containing fatty acids are presented. These implications include the extended lifetime of unsaturated species in the troposphere facilitated by the presence of solids, semi-solids or viscous phases, and an enhanced rate of ozone uptake by particulate unsaturates compared to corresponding gas-phase organics. Ozonolysis of oleic acid enhances its CCN activity, which implies that oxidatively processed particulate may contribute to indirect forcing of radiation
Neutrons from Piezonuclear Reactions
We report the results obtained by cavitating water solutions of iron salts
(iron chloride and iron nitrate) with different concentrations at different
ultrasound powers. In all cases we detected a neutron radiation well higher
than the background level. The neutron production is perfectly reproducible and
can at some extent be controlled. These evidences for neutron emission
generated by cavitation support some preliminary clues for the possibility of
piezonuclear reactions (namely nuclear reactions induced by pressure and shock
waves) obtained in the last ten years. We have been able for the first time to
state some basic features of such a neutron emission induced by cavitation,
namely: 1) a marked threshold behavior in power, energy and time; 2) its

Landslide damage assessment using the Support Analysis Framework (SAF): the 2009 landsliding event in Calabria (Italy)
In this paper, a simplified methodological approach is used to assess damage
indices related to landslide phenomena that occurred in Calabria (Italy)
between November 2008 and January 2009. This approach, which was designed
for and applied to single landslides, uses the Support Analysis Framework
(SAF), a procedure containing the elements that can be damaged by a
landslide grouped in categories. In this paper, we test wide-ranging use of
the SAF on a number of landslides, assessing landslide damage on a municipal
scale to get a final estimate of the amount of damage caused by all of the
landslides that occurred in a selected municipality.

Data regarding the damage caused by landslides were gathered from the press.
Daily newspapers were systematically collected and elaborated to assess
direct, indirect and intangible damage caused during the abovementioned
period by a rainfall-triggered <i>landsliding event</i>. In the paper, regional- and
provincial-scale results are described, and the methodological approach is
briefly described.

The application of the proposed methodological approach to the 2009
landsliding event shows that the results can be used to summarise landslide
damage from a complex event in order to better plan an intervention strategy
at a regional, provincial or municipal scale.

The availability of newspaper data during the event and the speed of the
proposed approach allow for rapid location of the damaged sectors during the
event, which will continuously upgrade the regional damage framework. This
can all be done almost in "real time".

For regional agencies, this framework can be a starting point to both manage
the emergency and to acquire and interpret data giving a more detailed
damage distribution so that a response can be organised. Moreover, based on
the damage assessment, a characterisation of the landsliding event can also
be carried out and used to describe the damage scenario occurring after each
type of event
On the age of the magnetically active WW Psa and TX Psa members of the beta Pictoris association
There are a variety of different techniques available to estimate the ages of
pre-main-sequence stars. Components of physical pairs, thanks to their strict
coevality and the mass difference, such as the binary system analysed in this
paper, are best suited to test the effectiveness of these different techniques.
We consider the system WW Psa + TX Psa whose membership of the 25-Myr beta
Pictoris association has been well established by earlier works. We investigate
which age dating technique provides the best agreement between the age of the
system and that of the association. We have photometrically monitored WW Psa
and TX Psa and measured their rotation periods as P = 2.37d and P = 1.086d,
respectively. We have retrieved from the literature their Li equivalent widths
and measured their effective temperatures and luminosities. We investigate
whether the ages of these stars derived using three independent techniques are
consistent with the age of the beta Pictoris association. We find that the
rotation periods and the Li contents of both stars are consistent with the
distribution of other bona fide members of the cluster. On the contrary, the
isochronal fitting provides similar ages for both stars, but a factor of about
four younger than the quoted age of the association, or about 30% younger when
the effects of magnetic fields are included. We explore the origin of the
discrepant age inferred from isochronal fitting, including the possibilities
that either the two components may be unresolved binaries or that the basic
stellar parameters of both components are altered by enhanced magnetic
activity. The latter is found to be the more reasonable cause, suggesting that
age estimates based on the Li content is more reliable than isochronal fitting

The ozonolysis of primary aliphatic amines in fine particles
International audienceThe oxidative processing by ozone of the particulate amines octadecylamine (ODA) and hexadecylamine (HDA) is reported. Ozonolysis of these amines resulted in strong NO2? and NO3? ion signals that increased with ozone exposure as monitored by photoelectron resonance capture ionization aerosol mass spectrometry. These products suggest a mechanism of progressive oxidation of the particulate amines to nitroalkanes. Additionally, a strong ion signal at 125 m/z is assigned to the ion NO3? (HNO3). For ozonized mixed particles containing ODA or HDA + oleic acid (OL), with pO3?3×10?7 atm, imine, secondary amide, and tertiary amide products were measured. These products most likely arise from reactions of amines with aldehydes (for imines) and stabilized Criegee intermediates (SCI) or secondary ozonides (for amides) from the fatty acid. The routes to amides via SCI and/or secondary ozonides were shown to be more important than comparable amide forming reactions between amines and organic acids, using azelaic acid as a test compound. Finally, direct evidence is provided for the formation of a surface barrier in the ODA + OL reaction system that resulted in the retention of OL at high ozone exposures (up to 10?3 atm for 17 s). This effect was not observed in HDA + OL or single component OL particles, suggesting that it may be a species-specific surfactant effect from an in situ generated amide or imine. Implications to tropospheric chemistry, including particle bound amines as sources of oxidized gas phase nitrogen species (e.g.~NO2, NO3), formation of nitrogen enriched HULIS via ozonolysis of amines and source apportionment are discussed
