The withered experience: between annihilation and emancipation

The condition of the individual as the subject of experience constitutes one of the main themes on which the critical reflection of Frankfurt intellectuals, such as Theodor W. Adorno, Herbert Marcuse and Max Horkheimer to name a few, focuses. This article proposes an exploration around the recurring judgment of the impoverishment of the experience denounced by Walter Benjamin and the silenced experience defined in the work of Theodor W. Adorno. The objective is to present a critical approach on the problematic experience-subject relationship, as well as the obstacles that arise around the configuration of the Self and that require a new form of theoretical consciousness, capable of resisting the annihilation of the content of experience of the individual. The article takes place in two moments: “The degraded subject” addresses the modern subject as a central reference for the critical thought and the second part is entitled “The withered experience” that outlines the disastrous outcome of the subjection of the empirical on the individual consciousness and thus depriving it of an intimate and whole experience. The reflection on the reifying power of the operative social objectivity, hidden behind the consensus that seeks to impose itself over social antagonisms, allows us to intensify the dialectic of civilization and rethink the collapse of the subject

    A new monoclinic polymorph of dichloridotetrakis(dimethyl sulfoxide)ruthenium(II)

The title compound, cis,fac-dichloridotetrakis(dimethyl sulfoxide)-κ3 S,κO-ruthenium(II), [RuCl2(C2H6OS)4], was obtained from newly synthesized ruthenium complexes of 3-amino-2-chloropyridine. The Ru atom has a distorted octahedral coordination with two cis-oriented chloride ligands and four dimethyl sulfoxide ligands. Three of the sulfoxide ligands are S-bonded in a fac configuration, while the fourth is O-bonded. The title compound represents a new, and fourth, polymorph of the complex. Two other monoclinic forms and an orthorhombic modification have been reported previously

Mental Health and Wellbeing at Schools: Health Promotion in Primary Schools with the Use of Digital Methods

    Get PDF
Mental health disorders among primary school children remain a crucial issue. Early health promotion interventions can positively affect and prevent the onset of mental disorders. Promising digital mental health methods have been implemented for adolescents and youths with scarce evidence among younger ages. Therefore, the aim of the current systematic review was to identify health promotion interventions on mental health and wellbeing, with the use of digital methods, delivered in primary school settings. Six digital interventions have been identified, three of which were targeting teachers and the others students. Regardless of the limited number of studies, the effectiveness of the web-based interventions upon teachers' knowledge and attitudes and the positive impact on children's behavioral improvements has been documented. The lack of adequate evidence highlights the need for further research in the field. The current review provides information for professionals working in primary schools useful for the design and implementation of effective mental health and wellbeing interventions

The great tit HapMap project: a continental‐scale analysis of genomic variation in a songbird

A major aim of evolutionary biology is to understand why patterns of genomic diversity vary within taxa and space. Large-scale genomic studies of widespread species are useful for studying how environment and demography shape patterns of genomic divergence. Here, we describe one of the most geographically comprehensive surveys of genomic variation in a wild vertebrate to date; the great tit (Parus major) HapMap project. We screened ca 500,000 SNP markers across 647 individuals from 29 populations, spanning ~30 degrees of latitude and 40 degrees of longitude – almost the entire geographical range of the European subspecies. Genome-wide variation was consistent with a recent colonisation across Europe from a South-East European refugium, with bottlenecks and reduced genetic diversity in island populations. Differentiation across the genome was highly heterogeneous, with clear ‘islands of differentiation’, even among populations with very low levels of genome-wide differentiation. Low local recombination rates were a strong predictor of high local genomic differentiation (FST), especially in island and peripheral mainland populations, suggesting that the interplay between genetic drift and recombination causes highly heterogeneous differentiation landscapes. We also detected genomic outlier regions that were confined to one or more peripheral great tit populations, probably as a result of recent directional selection at the species' range edges. Haplotype-based measures of selection were related to recombination rate, albeit less strongly, and highlighted population-specific sweeps that likely resulted from positive selection. Our study highlights how comprehensive screens of genomic variation in wild organisms can provide unique insights into spatio-temporal evolutionary dynamics

The present research offers a study of male dramatis personae appearing in the collection of Japanese ordinary tales "Nihon Mukashi-banashi Shusei", compiled by Keigo Seki in the years 1950 - 1958. Key interest is taken in male figures or other figures with male functions, be them protagonists, antagonists or bit players, in other words - on the character of "man" defined by his masculine role and seen in conflict with himself, other male and female characters, animal figures and representatives of the supernatural; as well as his actions in and interaction with the tale environment. The classification follows the various folktale realisations of male characters in three main groups - the man in family, the man in society and the man in nature. The methods applied in the study include those of literary analysis, text structural study, comparative folkloristics, anthropology, gender studies, and psychology. References to Japanese culture, socio- historical realities, philosophy, religion, aesthetics and folk beliefs form the background of the study. The aim of the research is to supply a unified classification and a many-facet interpretation of male characters in their typical folktale realisations and is foreseen for a large spectrum of readers - from specialists in various fields to general public
