Optimal parameters of leader development in lightning

    Get PDF
The dependences between the different parameters of a leader in lightning are obtained theoretically. The physical mechanism of the instability leading to the formation of the streamer zone is proposed. The instability has the wave nature and is caused by the self-influence effects of the space charge. Using a stability condition of the leader propagation, a dependence is obtained between the current across the leader head and its velocity of motion. The dependence of the streamer zone length on the gap length is also obtained. It is shown that the streamer zone length is saturated with the increasing of the gap length. A comparison between the obtained dependences and the experimental data is presented

Experimental modelling of lightning interaction phenomena with a free potential conducting objects

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the physical processes of the development of air discharge and its interaction with free potential conducting objects. The space-time development of lightning in gaps was recorded by a motion picture camera and an optoelectronic transducer. The electric field at different points in the gap was measured using a Pockels device both in the leader stage and in the stage of the return stroke. Experimental results of the streamer zone length measurements in the gaps with lengths up to 65 meters are presented. The physical processes occurring during the interaction of positive and negative long sparks with isolated objects were investigated. The striking probability of isolated conducting spheres with different diameters and the dependence of the strike on the location of the gap are investigated

A note on the Deser-Tekin charges

Perturbed equations for an arbitrary metric theory of gravity in DD dimensions are constructed in the vacuum of this theory. The nonlinear part together with matter fields are a source for the linear part and are treated as a total energy-momentum tensor. A generalized family of conserved currents expressed through divergences of anti-symmetrical tensor densities (superpotentials) linear in perturbations is constructed. The new family generalizes the Deser and Tekin currents and superpotentials in quadratic curvature gravity theories generating Killing charges in dS and AdS vacua. As an example, the mass of the DD-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole in an effective AdS spacetime (a solution in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory) is examined.Comment: LATEX, 7 pages, no figure

Spectral observations of X Persei: Connection between H-alpha and X-ray emission

We present spectroscopic observations of the Be/X-ray binary X Per obtained during the period 1999 - 2018. Using new and published data, we found that during "disc-rise" the expansion velocity of the circumstellar disc is 0.4 - 0.7 km/s. Our results suggest that the disc radius in recent decades show evidence of resonant truncation of the disc by resonances 10:1, 3:1, and 2:1, while the maximum disc size is larger than the Roche lobe of the primary and smaller than the closest approach of the neutron star. We find correlation between equivalent width of H-alpha emission line (WαW\alpha) and the X-ray flux, which is visible when 15 A˚ <Wα≤40 A˚15 \: \AA \: < W\alpha \le 40 \: \AA. The correlation is probably due to wind Roche lobe overflow.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
