The Growth of Black Holes and Bulges at the Cores of Cooling Flows
Central cluster galaxies (cDs) in cooling flows are growing rapidly through
gas accretion and star formation. At the same time, AGN outbursts fueled by
accretion onto supermassive black holes are generating X-ray cavity systems and
driving outflows that exceed those in powerful quasars. We show that the
resulting bulge and black hole growth follows a trend that is roughly
consistent with the slope of the local (Magorrian) relation between bulge and
black hole mass for nearby quiescent ellipticals. However, a large scatter
suggests that cD bulges and black holes do not always grow in lock-step. New
measurements made with XMM, Chandra, and FUSE of the condensation rates in
cooling flows are now approaching or are comparable to the star formation
rates, alleviating the need for an invisible sink of cold matter. We show that
the remaining radiation losses can be offset by AGN outbursts in more than half
of the systems in our sample, indicating that the level of cooling and star

Moments of the Virtual Photon Structure Function
The photon structure function is a useful testing ground for QCD. It is
perturbatively computable apart from a contribution from what is usually called
the hadronic component of the photon. There have been many proposals for this
nonperturbative part of the real photon structure function. By studying moments
of the virtual photon structure function, we explore the extent to which these

Prognostic significance of precordial ST segment depression during inferior myocardial infarction in the thrombolytic era: Results in 16,521 patients
Objectives. We examined the prognostic significance of precordial ST segment depression among patients with an acute inferior myocardial infarction. Background. Although precordial ST segment depression has been associated with a poor prognosis, this correlation has not been adequately quantified, partly because of small sample sizes and methodologic limitations in previous studies. Methods. We examined the clinical and angiographic outcomes of 16,521 patients with an acute inferior myocardial infarction who underwent thrombolysis in the Global Utilization of Streptokinase and t-PA for Occluded Coronary Arteries (GUSTO-I) study. Patients were classified into those without precordial ST segment depression (n = 6,422 [38.9%]), those with ST segment depression in leads V1 to V3 only (n = 5,850 [35.4%]), those with ST segment depression in leads V4 to V6 only (n = 876 [5.3%]) and those with ST segment depression in both leads V1 to V3 and leads V4 to V6 (n = 3,373 [20.4%]) on initial electrocardiography. Outcome measures included postinfarction complications (second- or third-degree heart block, congestive heart failure or shock) and 30-day and 1-year mortality. Results. Patients with precordial ST segment depression had larger infarctions, more postinfarction complications and a higher mortality rate than those without precordial ST segment depression (4.7% vs. 3.2% at 30 days; 5.0% vs. 3.4% at 1 year; both p < 0.001), regardless of whether ST segment depression was noted in leads V1 to V6 or in leads V4 to V6. The magnitude of precordial ST segment depression (sum of leads V1 to V6) added significant independent prognostic information after adjustment for clinical risk factors; the risk of 30-day mortality increased by 36% for every 0.5 mV of precordial ST segment depression. Conclusions. Assessment of the magnitude of precordial ST segment depression is useful for acute risk stratification in patients with an inferior myocardial infarction
Search for the Proton Decay Mode proton to neutrino K+ in Soudan 2
We have searched for the proton decay mode proton to neutrino K+ using the
one-kiloton Soudan 2 high resolution calorimeter. Contained events obtained
from a 3.56 kiloton-year fiducial exposure through June 1997 are examined for
occurrence of a visible K+ track which decays at rest into mu+ nu or pi+ pi0.
We found one candidate event consistent with background, yielding a limit,

Flow cytometry can reliably capture gut microbial composition in healthy adults as well as dysbiosis dynamics in patients with aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma
Modulation of commensal gut microbiota is increasingly recognized as a promising strategy to reduce mortality in patients with malignant diseases, but monitoring for dysbiosis is generally not routine clinical practice due to equipment, expertise and funding required for sequencing analysis. A low-threshold alternative is microbial diversity profiling by single-cell flow cytometry (FCM), which we compared to 16S rRNA sequencing in human fecal samples and employed to characterize longitudinal changes in the microbiome composition of patients with aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma undergoing chemoimmunotherapy. Diversity measures obtained from both methods were correlated and captured identical trends in microbial community structures, finding no difference in patients' pretreatment alpha or beta diversity compared to healthy controls and a significant and progressive loss of alpha diversity during chemoimmunotherapy. Our results highlight the potential of FCM-based microbiome profiling as a reliable and accessible diagnostic tool that can provide novel insights into cancer therapy-associated dysbiosis dynamics
From thermal rectifiers to thermoelectric devices
We discuss thermal rectification and thermoelectric energy conversion from
the perspective of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and dynamical systems
theory. After preliminary considerations on the dynamical foundations of the
phenomenological Fourier law in classical and quantum mechanics, we illustrate
ways to control the phononic heat flow and design thermal diodes. Finally, we
consider the coupled transport of heat and charge and discuss several general

Quality of life tools to inform co-design in the development of assistive technologies for people with dementia and their carer
A number of tools exist to measure quality of life (QoL) for people with dementia (PwD). A selection of existing measures are summarised, obtained from an online literature survey, comprising of scales administered either by healthcare professionals with the PwD (self-report) and/or their carers (proxy report) or from observation. It is suggested that a combination of such tools with user satisfaction questionnaires may provide a way to approach the problem of evaluating Assistive Technology (AT) solutions or inform co-design of technological solutions with PwD and their carers
